How To MIG Weld (ANY GAP)

- In this video I show how to Mig weld any gap. This process is useful when you get your cuts off a little bit or your angles are off a little. This happens to the best of us. With the price of steel these days you have to fix what you can. This video shows the extreme a gap that I wouldn't use on anything structural. Nice one Pete, I should have watched your vid before going and buying a replacement wire tube for the gun because the problem only got a tiny bit better (I had slight rust on the wire roll). The truth is, I have the wire speed on max! Yet to go and put your great lesson to the test. Incidentally, my old Dad used to give me shit about calling people a Git when I was a kid, you referred to yourself as such at the beginning. The dictionary definition is either 1. a contemptible person, often a fool or 2. a bastard. Dad reckoned it meant specifically, the illegitimate son of a prostitute, which is fighting words really. But I digress… 'Appreciate the guidance.
When you kept admitting that the welds could look better… the said well if you really want good lookn ones fit it up better.
I was thinking 1:8 parent metal bridging gaps 1/4”+/- not easy if your crunching time.
Ex Storage tank faber here, 1” parent, 1/4”+/-gap, 1/8+/-with .045” dual shield, I would be loving it, you would only have to remove the positive reinforcement from the inside and run the back weld.
What you demonstrate isn’t how I would go about it but thats a good technique for sure, a little grinding before that cap and 🤌. Or make the weld on the 1/8” side same size as the 1/4”
Consistency can hide some horrendous fit up. You do what you can with what ya got.

I've been doing 3/8-5/16 gap on knife edged 20in pipe it takes forever to put the root in

Yeah ok I've been welding 1/4 inch wall irrigation pipe fence all week and the lackeys cutting the pipe have left me welding some ridiculous half inch gaps and the solution I came up with is pretty much what you did here except I just did two spiral weaves on either side of the gap and did a C weave like your final pass to knit them together. I don't resent these stoned drunk cutmen cuz honestly they're making me a much better welder I'm enjoying getting paid to get better but dang I didn't know .35 wire could bridge gaps like this but it just takes 3 passes and some professional pipeliner weaves 😅
I'm definitely getting 3/8" penetration though good enough for a fence

So if your machine said use setting 4, and you used setting two, is that a good rule of thumb for bridging big gaps, half the power that it recommends for the metal thickness? I've got a Hobart mug welder, I'm trying to teach myself on, I can stick weld okay but just getting started on mig, I'm sure my settings are different than your miller?
Yeah do you a lil test pannel and play around with your settings. With a big gap your not worrying about penetration so try one or two steps down to see how that works and let me know how you do!!
The job I'm doing now is quarter inch gaps and it's difficult because both ends are open with eighth of an inch thick metal vertical gaps. I'm looking for advice on making the process easier of possible
Thanks, I like to bridge the gap at both ends and in the middle then weld from one end to the middle let it cool then go from the middle to the other end. Just take it in small sections and mke sure it burns in to each side pretty good. Hope this helps.

🤔🤔🤔🤔 that's a tiny gap than what I've been filling! My new job I took over for a guy that was mad he had to grind and cut things out he told the boss he was a welder he didn't do all the things boss man told him to do soooooooo the gaps are like as big as the Grand canyon 😢😢 sucks and irritating and my not so great welds look like crap 😢😖 😂

How do I video welding without all the light Distortion and such? I really wanted to make a video on how to do this but the video is always too bright or too dark or there's electrical interference I have tried everything I can think of please help.
Are you using a phone camera or gopro????

Weld that gap with two open ends
Filling gaps with a GMAW is easy.
Yeah its alot easier than tig for sure
