Noob Trucker in the UK, bringing other new drivers the heads up on what its really like as a new driver. Milti drop and otherwise.I have been driving commercially for one year now and my vlogs are here to show you what driving a HGV the the UK is really like, I don't delete the bad bits its all raw and as it happens.

You did the right thing with your Traction Control even though It may seem like the wrong thing to do when switch your Traction Control off. When Traction Control is on it applies your brake to the spinning wheel and reduces power to the wheel with traction, this is why you see your revs drop even when your foot is on the throttle. Turning it off stops the computer applying the brake and reducing power, which in turn gives more power to both wheels which may help you get going, this is why people turn their Traction Control off when they do burnouts and doughnuts !!
yes sometimes you just need to give it the beans!
Ironically, the Local Council Salt store is only on Heasandford Industrial Estate about 1/4 mile away. Good people in Burnley, glad the locals helped you out!
its one of those moments when you avoid all eye contact, and make out you have everything under control for anyone watching :)
haha
I'm glad you kept that footage in as many vloggers would have stopped filming, that junction is awful isn't it and all those people waiting to get past probably didn't realise that ideally you needed to oull straight out but couldn't,great job Jay and Hope you have a great Christmas and New year🎄🍻🙂👍
i was shocked to see you stuck m8 you got me unstuck on the a55 last year when you had grit with you ,since then i carry some november onwards
Love a good marshalls POV video. I live in the village further up, and see arctics get stuck on that hill on the daily.
Wow that blue car has some patience... nice he waited tbh .. most would try squeeze through
So good to see you drive a DAF with a proper gearbox. I love the ZF manual.
I think you handled that like a professional. People don’t realise When that trailer starts wondering like that how quickly you can get yourself in a situation where there’s no way out, you can get yourself wedged and it game over.
You mean wandering. Trailers don't have brains therefore they can't wonder about anything.
@@lordrupertknob1882 😂😂
Nice 1 Jay lucky to get off that hill, just shows ye what a bit of grit can do to get you going 👏💪💯
I thought when you got out of the cab on the hill you were going to get the salt you used to carry, bet you've got some now!!!!
You would think the companies down on the estate would make sure it was clear, but maybe not!! Keep up the good work and have a safe Xmas
Worst nightmare stuck there. Can’t go forward or backward, blocking the road, cars waiting. You did well mate. These factories down narrow lane are out of order.
Awesome video as always.... I'll finish watching it now!
Fantastic vlog as always Jay, many thanks!! Wishing you & your family a very Merry Christmas & a very happy & healthy 2023 🎅🏻🎄🙏 Take care 🙏
It's good that there are people that put grit down for road users.
Like camera behind o/s shoulder nice one Jay,
Will
Great Vid mate. Going to keep having to clean that truck a lot this weather.
You did fantastic with that icy road. Stay safe. Have a merry Christmas.
Thanks, you too!
The old grit came to your rescue Jay just shows even the experience need help sometimes lol 😅 Merry Christmas to you 🎄
I got stuck reversing In to a yard on the first day of the snow last week. I should have known better really but thought I'd get away with it. Just wanted the earth to open up and swallow me up haha. Never been so embarrassed
Oh no!
Great video. Just like to say have a great Christmas and New year
Very very good video buddy there was definitely nothing more you could have done you handled it like a pro I seen you again on the m60 the other day you was on the opposite side keep up your great work my friend and I can't wait till the next one stay safe man 👍
I'm a American truck driver
And I really like your videos
Keep trucking brother!
That looked stressful Jay. Kept your cool reasonably well.
Great video Jay. Keep up the good work mate 👍
I got stressed out when you was stuck, so can't fathom how you felt
some clips were deleted not enough beeps for my words haha
@@truckerjay Now, I can understand that. I would have been the same
Brilliant content as always Jay ...tks buddy :-)
Glad you enjoyed it Jim
Well done on your driveing so sorry for you
Brilliant tune merry Christmas lad
A very merry Christmas to you all from Wellington Somerset
Well done driving in the snow fine im your biggest fan
Happy Christmas to you and yours jay,
I moved away from that area of the North east few years back haven't been around Stockton area even longer so was nice to see it. So thanks for that 🤣
Just became a channel member Trucker Jay In the UK
Nothing more you could of done Jay, really felt for you in that situation, nice to get the lads with grit turn up and help, had that when on the buses, I took a double decker out with shovels and grit, worked a treat! Mind you I got stuck once and had to dig myself out!! Keep up the good work and keep safe! 😀🚛🎄
Could 'have' been done, not 'of' been done. The word 'could've' is an abbreviation of 'could have.'
@@lordrupertknob1882 I can see why you have that last name!
@@nickcastleton7438 You should be thanking me for correcting your woeful grammar.
Cruise control not working on a DAF is common with the front sensors ,means something blocking of the sensors with dirt…
My uncle used to have a 25kg sack of sharp sand under the bunk, always wondered why he would lug it around
Stopped wondering after getting stuck coming out of some shithole in wales in the snow and ice. Stuck at the junction big pain in the ass.
Lay it out under drive wheels for a few yards to just beyond the slippage and away you go, takes 15 seconds per side and you just drive away.
big hello to you hgvs keep safe out there this new wk and thank you all from norwich
Got really stuck there mate great video again tell the haters to sod off
i always carry bag grit in winter trucking and shovel
Well done Jay on the hill even though stalled wouldn't everyone, and omg I went to a Turkish Barbar singed my ears 🙄
Now that’s a professional driver 👏👏👏
Th hill near Brighouse is known locally as Killer hill .......it has been known for downhill artics to loose brakes and not make to corner at the bottom
4:42 ahhhhhh the DAF chime of death
I’ve heard of people lifting the unit like when you going a trailer to help with traction. Never tried it so I can’t say for sure that it works Jay
Great support from Transit crew
Great video pal them dash boards don't half rattle on them Dafs I've noticed it on a few other vloggers videos aswell and our Dafs at work are the same
From my artic driving days, I’ve always thought 6x2 tractor units are next to useless in anything other than dry weather. At least you had a manual.
Great video jay and have a nice Christmas
Thanks, you too!
-12 and over 1 foot of snow for me Jay on the worst day, didn't get above -5 for 8 days lol
Thank you 👍👍
Great video Jay. Keep up the good work mate 👍 Thumbs up from me buddy 😊
Thanks 👍
Glad to see you had some guardian angels come to your aid on that slippery junction, great vlog, and I now know how to make proper coffee, all the best to you.
I bet the driver of the Blue Car waiting for you to pull out was thinking “ Oh Come On”
oh yrd i bet
i didnt realise you worked for a new company jay, but goodluck in the job
A very good Sunday evening Jay from Alan in Lowestoft buddy 👍 😀
Thanks for the visit
in winter carry a bag of gravel in the cab
Fair play jay ,im surprised everyone didn't start moaning at you like you wanted to be stuck there, you handled it well 👏.
Great video Jay lad I would have been letting out a good few f’s and Jeff’s 😬🤬I’m originally from Stretford Manchester but live in Castlebar County Mayo for da last year and yesterday Sat 17 Dec 22 da roads in Mayo were like ice rinks freezing rain was coming down 😬🙄
It sounds really nice but its just the north east somewhere? Wow!
Some advice from a guy who's been driving in the snow and ice in the states for 30 years. Carry a container of road salt in your sidebox. Along with a camping shovel. Good video
usually did but just not got round to picking up a bag.
@@truckerjay I hear ya. I just left the house and forgot my hammer and it's-5 F Hopefully I don't have any stuck trailer breaks before I can pick up another hammer
Cracking video Jay, thanks for that. Hindsight is a wonderful thing re: carrying grit but in reality councils should grit the blooming roads 😡 could've been worse you could've been in a Merc in which case you'd probably still be sat there spinning the wheels 😂 stay safe and you and yours have a great Christmas.
Excellent content as always Jay and are you please with the DAF XF 510.
Bet there was a few cuss words thrown about there jay! 😂 merry Xmas! Hope you have a good one 🥰🎅🏻
maybe ....
big hello have great new wk keep warm thank you from norwich
Thanks, you too!
Slip sliding and getting know where good job the council stopped to help you out. And a visit to Stockton on tees 🤷♀️ so close to us and I didn’t know
that wasn't the council i dont think?
ive noticed a fair few wagons throughout this cold snap have been carrying a few bags of salt behind the cab with a strap over them and a shovel fella!!! would that be an other option you could try doing on your truck bud. comment written before i heard you saying your old company supplied you a bag of salt!!!
first time ive seen northwich in the videos im from there
All that bloody beepin makes it worse I think, there should be a button to temporarily disable the sounds for situations like that. I said temporarily as I know it's a safety feature, but having a driver with a calm head who isn't loosing his rag with the dashboard is one also 🤣 Maybe carry a bucket with a lid on it, with some grit. Scatter it on the road and put a handfull on top of each drive wheel, it gives you more traction where you need it as the wheels turn. Wee old guy from Oban taught me that trick.
love your posts - followed them for a couple of years - I have never seen your Yorkie bar - I thought it wa compulsory for truckers to have one
inset hale and pace sketch haha
good video
Felt your pain there stuck on ice
9:34 best british response haha
council should had it grit but everywhere was same last wk even pavements not done nasty freeze rain !!!!
You should carry a bag of grit with you, it might just give you that tiny bit more grip you need.
Oh I see, someone stopped and had some grit lol, I should of waited to post that comment lol. Would be good just to carry a little bag of it though.
Top tune
Great video Jay 👍
Thanks for the visit
@@truckerjay never miss a video Jay
My dad would’ve been a lot more explicit with the swear words even if I was there as well merry Christmas Jay and all the best for 2023.
I bet when you stopped to give the clutch a rest, you jumped out for a cigarette lol. I remember last winter you got stuck going up a big hill on a b road.
forgot about that yeah
How much of the footage when you got stuck was edited ? 🤣. All been there. Snow is fine but a bit of ice is a killer. Good of the highways to stop though . Drive safe.
ummm "none" haha
I might be a keyboard worrior as you like to call us, but as far as I can see from this footage there was nothing you could do differently, as you tried all different angles of approach to the junction, only real way out was either to not have traffic coming, and safe to pull out without stopping, or having a bag of sand on the truck. diff-lock won't make a blind bit of difference on ice, unless one wheel can get/gain traction. but diff lock just slows the wheel that is spinning from spinning, and as someone in the comments said it will bog down the engine.
one thing I might have tried myself is lowering the suspension on the cab, so that the weight in the trailer pushes the rear wheels on the cab into the ground more, but more weight on the rear wheels means less grip for the front wheels to steer. so would be in a loosing battle because would mean approaching the junction at a slower speed. and because of this that is why I say in this situation I cannot see anyway that you could have handled it any differently.
i hate driving cars in ice and snow, couldn't imagine driving an HGV
leat im not blocking the a55 this time lol
Can your company charge for waiting time when delayed for hours on sites ?
yep
i wonder how the modern driver would get on when you dont have powered steering ,and when we had real snow 2/3 foot deep?
im old enough to drive without power steering and its not too bad so log as its moving. real snow yeah then you need winter tyres not the "all weather" ones
Turn the tc off and it will give you.more go
It always amazes me that UK hauliers, and even the emergency services, don't use winter tyres.
People don't realise that when the temp gets to below +7c, you can lose 70% of your grip.
And below 0c, up to 100% of your grip is lost; which is basically what happened to you.
Glad you are ok though and the good people of Burnley helped you out 🙌 👍
More money should be spent nationally on driver education in the winter, and advising civilians and hauliers to fit winter tyres
Winter tyres ! Most hauliers can’t afford tyres of any sort
You are not the first or the last stalling on that hill going to Marshall's at southourham
Is it too old at 57 to go for my hgv 1. Ive got my class 2 but not a lot of driving time. Drove cars for 30 odd yrs lol
nope not at all go for it
Jay when are you going to do your CE licence thought you'd passed it by now mate
not going to bother with it
Moral of the story, don‘t ever go to Burnley!
Could just see you in the mountains in Europe 😂
nightmare can u not use middle lift when heavy it lifts 30 mil on the m a n truck has daf not got this i know the merc wont do it either its nightmare well handled man
Stick a bag of grit and a snow shovel on ya cat walk.....it will get you out of this kind of situation lad.
Why do companies get manuals these days surely unless you are doing extreme heavy automatics are the way for efficiency and economy
no they are less efficient on fuel.
I drive a scania xt450 automatic, I'd rather a manual all day long. The amount of times you're coming up a hill and it autoselects the wrong gear and before long you're wishing you never drove hgv's for a living lol. The weather the past week as well has really shown the benefits of having a manual, been driving in full manual nearly all week.
Ditch the French press and treat yourself to an Aeropress coffee maker… you won’t regret it.
Be careful where you park scott andrews at the tank of diesel stolen so be careful where you park up
yep i know he told me at 4am
14:59 Just put your arm out the window and tell them to stop. If those passenger cars on the main road knew what it's like to drive a truck on winter roads, they should have stopped
For f**ks sake.. That little blue car should have helped you... And all the others are just queuing up.. If you got the momentum you must go..
😎😊👍
Not much else you could have done there. Just annoying it’s on a bend/busy road that you have to stop.
What UK to cheap to lay down some salt
