Especially since we know that the Mountain isn't really the type to slowly torture people (and is well-known for his horrendous acts), so the original scene would've been a lot more believable and in line with his character.
That being said though, didn't this scene take place after his death and "resurrection" in the show? I just assumed that the way in which he was revived pretty much stripped him of his free will and turned him into a (more or less) mindless slave who couldn't go against any orders given to him by Cersei. So while the original scene would've definitely made a lot more sense for an uncontrollable/unpredictable Mountain to do prior to his death, it wouldn't really be "in character" now that he's no longer able to disobey/violate orders.

She's also talked about being pressured to agree to nudity. And that's just at the top of my head, and 2 very famous, relatively powerful actresses. Yeah, that's how I understood it, too.
And also: it's a 2 min scene, 3 seconds of which was the 'waterboarding'. I mean, don't get me wrong...I don't doubt, that it was an unpleasant experience. I choked, trying to drink from water bottle, while laying on my back, once. It's scary as heck and your first impulse is to want to jolt into a sitting position. Being tied down, would have been panic inducing for sure, even if you're just afraid of breathing in liquid.
I'm sure, there were many of scenes in bad/cold weather and such, that were probably very physically taxing for the actors as well. Having to stay in character, while freezing your ass off or doing fighting scenes or such. Not to mention all the s*xual stuff.
But this seems like a somewhat 'overdramatized' claim. Everything, from make-up and wardrobe and getting everyone in position and doing test runs and filming the whole scene, might having taken the whole day.
But I very much doubt, she actually laid there strapped down for 10 hours, while continuously being drenched in wine.

@@raraavis7782 Other people on the crew have talked about it too, it really does take forever when tv shows or movies do any kind of water (“wine” in this case) scene. Like a few years ago on American Horror Story, I was watching a behind the scenes thing and Billie Lourd
talked about how as soon as she saw that her character had a bathtub scene, she was dreading it because they take all day to film for whatever reason. All she had to do was sit in the tub for a few seconds while the other actresses gave her quick instructions on what to do (the tub was needed for time travel) and then she takes a breath and submerges herself. But it took 8 hours to film such a quick moment and she was a wet, freezing mess all day. Even though Cersei pouring that thing of wine doesn’t seem that long, they still do several takes from several angles and a bunch of other different reasons. She doesn’t blame anybody, it’s just what had to happen, but she’s talked about how it gave her nightmares for a while afterwards. I’m honestly surprised they even did it that way, it’s incredibly easy to aspirate and get pneumonia that way, especially doing it over and over.

Yeah. The fact she suffered no political blowback from the world is very very poor writing. She would've alienated every noble with relatives in that temple and every religious citizen of the Westeros. Even among the rank and file of the army there would be immediate unrest.
I get that in her madness she would believe to be solving a problem and not considering all the others she would create. The fact that she faced no real immediate consequences was just stupid writing.

While I definitely agree and point out that the entire theme of the series is actions have consequences and violence is always met with more violence. I would think the only thing I could think of that would support the non reaction was the Lannister’s army were in control of Kings Landing and the public couldn’t have defeated them.
What was really stupid was how easily Jamie sacked High Garden. In the books and the series the Tyrell’s army was one of the largest and best in the 7 kingdoms. Fighting a defensive war against an invading force would have taken a year before the Lannisters would have broken the gates. By then the Queen of Thorns would have gotten word to Danny who would have brought her dragons in to assist. High Garden would have never fallen to Jamie before Jamie’s army was set on fire.

It was so bad and I would have done the Night King battle in a completely different way, having the NK take Winterfell with the defenders shattered and fleeing into caverns to escape and running south with the NK marching south after them. Force Cersei to see the threat coming and a joining of forces to finally be able to beat the NK and his hordes. Kill Danny and her dragons in the battle and John sacrifices himself to take down the NK. All armies in ruins, Cersi can’t hold power and Kings Landing turns on her forcing her to flee. Kingdom is ruined and no one wants to be king of this mess. Final scene of the show is a dead Bran being pulled by a White Walker into the far north to become the next Night King.

Imagine you’re an actor going into work. You’ve mentally prepared yourself for quite an intense shoot, ie being r*ped by a 6’8, 400lbs man. You’re ready to go, then you’re told, “so yeah we’ve changed the script and now your character is going to get waterboarded for ten hours. To make it look realistic we’re gonna tie you to this table then pour this wine looking liquid over your face for the shots.”
For everyone questioning how that’s worse than the original script. What’s the first thing you do when water gets splashed in your face? Yeah, you use your hands to wipe it off. Now imagine you can’t. You know how bad it is when shampoo is getting in your eyes, but your hands are covered too so you can’t do anything about it. Panic sets in for a brief moment.
Now imagine you’re tied down. You’ve just taken an ill timed breath so water goes up your nose, and you can’t breathe through your mouth because there’s a water being cascaded onto it. You can’t signal to anyone that you’re actually panicking because it’s a torture scene and will probably think you’re just acting.
Sounds pretty scary to me. Not something I’d put myself forward for.

Well, it's about the history of the character. The mountain r*ped and killed Elia Martell, Oberyn Martell's sister, after killing her two small children in front of her. Allegedly by order of Tywin Lannister.
There's also that scene, where he very enthusiastically undresses and beats up Sansa, by order of Joffrey. He's a known sadist and r*pist, with a preference for very young girls.
It's not far fetched to assume, that that would be his preferred method of torturing a woman.
And then, there are the religious implications. Cersei is forcing the Septa to swallow wine, precisely because it's against her vows to consume alcohol. Same for sex. It's about making her feel 'defiled', as much as about causing her physical pain.
There are many examples in history, of nuns choosing suicide or self mutilation over being r*led by invaders.

Ironically the original SA scene would've been "safer" for the actress and play into The Mountain's character as protrayed in the books ... 💀. Though the SA did take place, it just cut to black before we witness it, which still works IMO we don't HAVE to see it.
I didn't and don't get the backlash at the SA scene with Sansa since before her, we'd already seen SA multiple times. A few particularly egregious ones being the deserters of the Nights Watch at Crastors Keep, The Dothraki sacking of a village and Danny with Khal Drogo.
The only reason I hated the Sansa scene was that it made no sense storywise and was overall only used to show just how "Evil" Ramsay is despite a whole season of torturing Theon.
ASOIAF is an insanely Grim and Dark series, it shows the realistic side of feudalism and its wars, no one is spared. Not men, not women, not children. Showing or Implying SA, abuse, murder etc. is an important aspect of the series. For those who find it uncomfortable, simply don't read the books or watch the show, lol. I do agree that things have to be dialed back for television and I like most if the changes they made along with the things they kept. Seasons 6, 7 and 8 were just straight nonsensical garbage though.
So yeah, I find it both amusing and hypocritical that people took offence to that one scene despite the fact we already witnessed arguably worse actions by characters in the show ... yet no one blinked an eye until Sansa 🤦🏿‍♂️.

    • @prplfleur
      @prplfleur Před 7 měsíci +7

people did blink an eye at rape in the earlier seasons, those are people that stopped watching the show. survivorship bias.
as for the people that continued, the reason why people blinked at sansa is because the show wasnt new anymore, it had gone on for 6 years at that point, we had seen so much rape over the years that people were pretty tired of it being used for titilation and "evil" characterization. yes we get it, rape was a part of that time period, but in the tv show it stopped being about that "point" and just became obnoxiously horrible
we were okay with it at first because it was new, it was establishing a world, and it was establishing characters. but when you keep doing it, it seems fo be less about the "message" and more that they were either lazy, gross, or just didnt care

    • @EL-ISS
      @EL-ISS Před 7 měsíci +1

@@prplfleur "It was establishing the world."
My point EXACTLY! SA was established as something that just happens and quite often, so it makes sense within the world that a sh*t ton of it happens, along side murder which people don't seem to mind despite it being just as bad if not WORSE lol. Theon was flayed and then there was those iron born who were flayed, too.
In a television sense I get why they wouldn't want to go that route (as you said it'd be obnoxious) and I agree. My point about peoples hypocrisy and not blinking until Sansa is that when people bring up their issues with SA in GoT and HoTD they always default to Sansa and stick to just that completely disregarding all the other disgusting acts that occur (including other SAs). Like all the other agregious things are fine but S.A. oh no not that. It'd make more sense to just say "the shows too graphic and violent for me" that makes complete sense.
Your reasoning for why people accepted SA before also doesn't really make sense. SA is SA you don't have to go seeing 6 seasons of it to finally say: "Okay that's, too, far." Which is what most people use for their argument.
If most people had your type of argument: "feels like the writers were getting lazy, obnoxious or disgusting." That'd be another completely acceptable point because it tells me you were obviously never okay with it and only spoke up about the Sansa B.S. because it doesn't make sense storywise and is a boring cop out.
Most people make it sound as if the other SA and torture scenes were fine but the Sansa one wasn't because it was too personal? Like as if it makes it worse or better just because it's a main character.
I suppose that is quite realistic since we'd be more upset if someone we know is assaulted over someone we didn't. Even though we know it's horrible either way we'd rather it affect "the other" just don't want to admit to it.
But yeah I hope I explained myself well, and for the most part I do agree with the points you were getting at. Hope to hear more of what your opinion is if you decide to reply.

No, she’s not being waterboarded. But this is a civvy woman, tied down and having water poured over her face. One ill timed breath and water shooting up her nose is gonna make panic set in. Not to mention how horrible it feels to have water in and around your eyes and not being able to do anything about it.

I understand EVERYONE is uncomfortable with forced relations type scenes but tbh that's unfortunately just an evil part of humanity. While I dislike them as well they do provide a very powerful emotion which is a big part of why we watch shows/movies. I'm rambling a bit but I think they should have left that scene bc it makes sense in the story and is sadly realistic.

Another way the SHOW was better than the book. Martin felt the need to go into the details of every instance of sexual assault, abuse, and rape. The show writers knew that kind of shit can be implied without taking away from the story one bit.

Getting wine poured on your face for a couple of seconds ≠ waterboarding. Real waterboarding goes on for an uncomfortable amount of time, and there's a cloth on your face so you can't breathe at all. Not saying they should have done that to her, because it's horrible, but whatever this is looks very mild.

Uh. Waterboarded? No, no, in real waterboarding they put a bit of cloth over the mouth so that water can pour in but you can't just cough it up. It creates the sensation of drowning without actually doing so. Getting water splashed on your face for hours would no doubt be tiresome, but that ain't waterboarding.
Really, the solution is for the director not to fuss over the perfect "wine spilled on face" shot and get it over with quickly.
