Music is the universal language! Band-Maid speaks it so well!

They describe themselves as "hard rock", and it's 100% 😎 if that's not your cup of tea, but they do have some much slower, almost badadic, songs, such as "The Dragon Cries".
If you'd like to see some more "rock" oriented music, to double check it wasn't a one-of with that song, try their recent, live "Don't you tell Me", or "Hate?" - oh, subtitles are usually a good idea, if they don't distract you too much from the performance 👍😎

Lest it goes unnoticed, bass and drums in this song is one of the best they ever did. Recording of this live is simply phenomenal.

Thanks, Matteh. BTW, if you express what your cup o' tea is, a bunch of us will pour a few cups for you. Although hard rock is their mainstay, Band-Maid does a lot of mid-tempo, ballad, and acoustic stuff. If you lean toward a particular style, let us know, Band-Maid has almost certainly done it. As for lyrics, I'd say that's up to you. With some exceptions, the videos pre-'21 don't have CC translations (you can still google them, but quality varies). The only thing I'd point out is that the instrumental & vocal layers in Band-Maid are many, and a big part of what makes the band so special is everything that goes on between those layers. The lyrics are consistently great, but the music is what will stay with you most.

One of the many fascinating aspects of Band-Maid is how the quality of the songs are all so high that you never get any agreement from dedicated fans on what the best songs are. I would rate Puzzle higher up than Wonderland, but I absolutely understand how one could see it the other way around, as I love Wonderland as well.

Think the lyrics would help personally but it depends on whether or not you even take notice of that stuff on a first listen. Some people just like to take in the music and take the vocals as part of the soundscape. Some songs of course require the lyrics to be understood to fully appreciate IMO.

I recommend just ignoring their lyrics until you're ready to actually do a deep dive that basically involves learning Japanese. Their primary lyricist is kind of a poet, loves wordplay, and her English isn't great, which is a tough combination to translate. Their lyrics are full of random references and allusions. e.g. For the song Shambles, there's a reference to like an ancient Chinese essay, as well as an in-joke from an audience interaction they had in New York. Any meaningful translation would require a ton of footnotes. Most of the translations that are out there are pretty poor. They've gotten better in the captions on their more recent videos, but captions will never tell the whole story.

In my top 5 songs. I've suggested this recently to a number of reactors as a bit of an antidote to the current wave of hard and fast songs- (Bestie being the odd one), which come at some cost to melody and arrangement. Usually this hinders the more subtle vocals and things like being able to hear Akane using cross sticks during the quiet section.

Valid remark about the occasional wobbles on Saiki's vocals live. In her defense they average 23 songs per concert. And most of the songs are difficult technically. Lots of lyrics, rapid cadences, not much space to breath. Also these performances are from some years ago. Saiki has shown a big increase in vocal abilities in the last year. She seems to have leveled up even compared to 2 years ago.

Yeah, but that was Saiki back then. Not now. She is a powerhouse now.

I think you'll find after you listen to five or six more that they are probably the best band currently

Yea, I don't speak any Japanese but it does not detour me from enjoying the music if you want to have the lyrics on hand as you react to the music by all means do it, but don't fell obligated for a reaction. I think the fan base is happy with your reaction to the fell of the music or the lyrics. 😊

BD songs are like children: if you have 10, which one is your favorite?
I love Wonderland, ...as well as about fifty other of their songs...

Thank you for your reaction. If you really want the lyrics I would suggest to read them in advance. One reason for that is that some Japanese words actually lack translation.and some translations are all over the place, poetic lyrics being difficult to translate as it is. It really doesn’t pay off being distracted by an incorrect, or flawed, translation when the it would require more of an analyse. But if you read the translation prior to reaction and accept that it could possibly be flawed in various ways, maybe it could be useful. That is really up to you. Have fun! :)

In my opinion pull up the lyrics ahead of time or read up on what the song is about. Trying to read lyrics while watching video your more likely to miss the musical performance over concentrating on reading the lyric in real time.
