If you're a bass player, then Band-Maid is your band! MISA MISA MISA!!!
There are many unique aspects to Real Existence that sets it apart from many rock songs: the starts and stops; Miku's little breakout vocal line; MISA's unique high-neck "fugue" during (in this performance) a homage dance with Saiki, both in black dress and shoeless; Akane's double tempo gallop; and Kanami's solo. I mean, who would ever put that kind of solo in a rock song? But it works... just like all of the plot-twists, complex density, and genre-merging they employ on most of their material.
Every section offers something different than the previous one. That's one reason many people -- unless you're a musician - may find it difficult to get into their music at first listen. As tightly integrated as it is, there's so much going on. And then you add the Japanese language and maid outfits... But for people who like and appreciate their writing, musicianship, performance and personalities, Band-Maid's beautiful cacophony of excellence offers unlimited rewards for repeat listening... and mega stardom for the Maids, imxo. Thx, Raff & Kyle!
How could you leave out MISA's prominent bass line, especially the unique, distinctive little fugue from her bass accompanying the Saike's vocal.

OMG! This is only your second Band-Maid song.......your just babies. Man are you guys in for a true Rock Journey right down the Pigeon Hole. You have found the greatest Rock band in "Existence" today. The band started in 2013 and in 2014 was struggling with sales of their first album "Maid in Japan". The executives said get sales up or your done (paraphrasing). They came out with the music video of "Thrill" and posted it originally on Fakebook then on CZcams, it immediately went viral and Band-Maid was saved from their fast track to obscurity. I Highly recommend "Thrill", as it's part of their History and required listening IMHO. BTW- In "Thrill" the rhythm guitarist Miku couldn't play a note on the guitar so her "Rick" was just a prop. Now she has her own signature Zemaitis guitar. Cheers

*MISA (Mee-sah) - Bass Guitar, Nickname: "The Barefoot Assassin" MISA always performs barefoot as she states she likes to feel the music through her feet, and "kills" everything she plays.
*Kanami Tono (Kah-nah-mee) - Lead Guitar/Genius Songwriter Nickname: "Mincho" “Kanamincho” ……Miku’s guitar Sensei.
*Miku Kobato (Mee-koo) - Band-Maid Spokesperson/Rhythm Guitar/Lyricist/Founder/Backing Vocals/Lead Vocals…hardest working girl in music. Nickname: "Little Pigeon" (Miku’s surname means “Little Pigeon”) ....po! Getting caught up in Band-Maid means going down the “Pigeon Hole”…….. no rabbits here.
*Saiki Atsumi (Sy-kee) -Lead Vocals Nickname: "The Princess" “Si-chan”. Saiki may be called The Princess but Miku is The Queen…..also Saiki is Kanami’s “crush”.
This is the beauty of Band-Maid. Just when you think you know what they do and what their sound is, they'll throw something completely different at you. Whether it be pop, punk, metal, blues, jazz or any other genre, they can do it and do it well. You're in for a fun musical journey down the pigeon hole.
These ladies are the real deal. Seen them twice in concert so far and won't miss any chance to catch them again. They have so many songs that switch and meld genre, but the talent in the entire group just rises to the top. Live is always best!

Saiki doesn’t speak English. She knows a few words and phrases, but even then, her accent often means you’ll miss the lyric. All part of the charm ❤ I’ve learned some Japanese because of this band, and I bet you will too. It doesn’t matter what language she speaks; her voice is the instrument. Enjoy.
As a bassist myself, this band keeping MISA out front in the mix is so rewarding! She often uses a pick, then tucks it like a guitarist to slap and pop, then seamlessly continues with the pick. “Play,” official live has a nice closeup of this.
They do instrumentals as well. Relying solely upon songwriting and musicianship. “Onset,” official live is a nice introduction to this. (Flash warning there too)

Don’t sleep on BAND-MAID. If you do one song a week, you will need nearly three years to get the job done. And a new album is coming in September.
And by the time they finish the current discography, knowing the Ladies prodigious output, they will have added at least 15-24 more songs to it.

Saw Band Maid at a small venue 600 max. They still played with the same intensity. I stood 30 ft in front of the stage and they blew me away. Every one in this band are so good.

A big gidday from Nth Qld, I'm now 64, I made a living on the Oz music scene in the 80's and 90's , got tired of all the crap etc and became disillusioned with music in general, then a few years ago these mighty Rock Goddesses lit the spark again, I've even hauled the kit out of retirement and I'm loving it. If I win lotto I'm blowing it on bringing the Maids to Oz, what a fcken band Po, enjoy the journey boys you won't regret it 👍🍻

Seriously though, you can't go wrong with any of their live videos. I love their music but they really blossom in a live performance. No matter how technical they are playing, they're smiling like it's nothing. Most of their live videos are from a tenth anniversary concert that was 3 hours long and they kept the energy level throughout.
Yes sir, this is a great song... but there are SO MANY MORE. Band-Maid has been my favorite, hands down, for many years now. Thanks for the reaction and check out more. BTW, once you have a few Band-Maid songs under your belt, then you will appreciate Bestie more.
And this song was from fairly early on in their career... Band-Maid really just play what they want to play and sometimes it's a little softer, and quiet a bit of the time it's high energy.

10 years of work. Grinding out over 400 live performances in that time. 8 years if you count the pandemic.
You guys are fine. You know how it is......fan is short for fanatic. We love our Maids! No other band has ever, yes I said ever. No band has ever recorded as many bad-ass songs that I want to hear than these ladies. I can listen to them an hour a day for 6 straight days and not play any song twice. And love every minute of it!

Great reaction. Watch HATE? live from Yokohama Arena for an incredible bass and guitar conversation. Also, if you want to hear a variety of bass playing styles in one crazy song watch NO GOD live. By the way, the Yokohama Arena show is available on Blu-ray and DVD and even though there are no closed captions it's an incredible performance.
Real Existence is an amazing song, and this live performance is brilliant. Next? A lot of people like Hate? or Domination official live videos for the extended solos (Hate? features a bass/guitar duel), or Freedom official live for an extended drum solo. Thrill is their first video that helped them break out, and is a simpler hard rock son but still sounds great. I really like Blooming, Choose Me, and Alone, and for incredible instrumentals there's From Now On, or Onset official live. Then there's Puzzle official live, or Play official live with an extended instrumental opening... I could go on, they have an extensive back catalog from the last 11 years and most of it is amazing, even songs that never got a video and were not played live that much.
A signature "Black Smoker" Misa bass will set you back at least $4000.

Great reaction guys. Lead guitarist Kanami, set the stage on fire with this song. Thanks for reacting to Band-Maid. In their early years (2013 - 2018) I believe they were doing about 100 shows per year, so this is why most of the fans call them a "live" band, they paid their dues. Thanks for reacting to Band-Maid.
Two things that separate Band-Maid from a lot of other J-Rock bands (and many bands). One, they have an outstanding lead vocalist who doesn't resort to screams and growls as part of her vocals and a backing vocalist that harmonizes very well. They actually sing melodically. Secondly, all their songs, while being hard rock in nature, are also melodic. Their songs often become earworms because they resonate not as just a lot of sound, but with a clear and memorable tune.
YOU ARE SO RIGHT BILL!!! I LOVE SAIKI'S VOICE AND ESPECIALLY WHEN MIXED WITH MIKU'S. SINGING IN ROCK, NOT SCREAMING FOR THE SAKE OF SCREAMING BECAUSE YOU CAN'T SING. THEIR MUSIC MAKES IT SO EASY TO REMEMBER AND SING TO, IN THE ENGLISH PARTS AT LEAST!
To be fair, screaming vocals are a skill all of their own. Not everyone who can sing can scream, and not everyone who can scream can sing. And of course there are people who can do both. We have plenty of respect for anyone who gets up on stage to put themselves out there for others like that.
You will get a lot of recommendations for "Hate?" Live. Not my favourite, not close to my favourites but the MAIDIACS who love that song are in the majority 😅
I don't know of any other band where the fans' playlists differ so much. So, this is just a quite random selection of songs: For some very special live videos try Freedom, Play and Endless Story. With Moratorium (Live at Zepp), Rinne (MV) and Dice you can hear more hard rock while more catchy songs are Choose me (MV) and Alone (MV). And if you want to hear some ballads then maybe About Us (MV) and Daydreaming (MV) are good picks. But don't miss some of their instrumentals like From now on (MV) and Onset (Live). And finally a very special live performance is Manners/Blackhole (Official Online Live)🍌 And there is more: For example the songs with Miku in lead, their christmas acoustic concert and the 'cover band' Band-Maiko ;-)
But if you want to start at the beginning of their career (2013-2017) then go with Thrill (MV, their first video), Real Existence (second video), Alone (MV, first own composition), Freedom(best LIVE performance), Choose Me, Play (LIVE!), ...
1 - It's okay, we forgive you. 2 - Even the ones you like as soon as the song starts, I'd recommend waiting before you start talking about whether you like or don't like the song. Their songs can have a lot of twists and turns. This is early hard rocking band maid. There are a lot of later hard rocking Band-Maid songs too (Hate?, From Now On to name a couple) that can get very complex and will take many listens for you to even hear everything that's going on. 3 - They travel through genres the way normal folks walk over to the fridge for a beer. Effortlessly. So my recommendation is to try to enjoy the variety you are about to experience with these ladies, since I could name you ten of their songs that are nothing like any of the others. It takes time for it to really hit you how good they are. Cheers, dudes - and thanks for coming back to the best hard rock that the world has seen in many many years. And if you're a bass player? Be prepared to be awed when you watch Hate? or the No God Official Live from 2023.
As a huge Band-Maid fan (tattoo included), Bestie just is just not where it's at, it's nice. The music written by Mike from incubus is just trying to write an incubus song with Band-Maid flavor. This is Band-Maid, the feeling of a hand reaching into your chest and gripping your heart and not letting go. Also as a bass player myself this is YOUR band. MISA is a pure genius and you haven't seen anything yet. When I saw her I quietly put my bass in the closet for a while. But Akane actually made me buy a drum kit and start that journey. Keep it up guys there is a lot more to see.

For more Akane on drums and Misa on bass, you might like "No God" or "Blackhole" live (both double videos from online shows during Covid.) When it comes to these kinds of videos, it's a fine line. We have to ensure we pause every so often so that it's not just us sitting there for half the song staring the screen. That sort of thing upsets the almighty Algorithm (may it live forever).

Been following these guys for about 4 years now and am still listening to em each day. Dun matter what you pick next, you won't find a bad one ... might have one that you'll think is better than the last, but won't find a bad one - not bad considering they have 130 plus in their catalogue.

This is a rabbit hole that you guys will be stoked to dive into.
Forget the costumes an the language barrier cos after a coupla more, you wont even notice.
Fun fact - the backing vocalist (Miku) couldn't play guitar when they first started ... the lead guitarist (Kanami) taught her.
2 songs out of 130ish. THIS is BAND-MAID! You just had a taste of "the gap" and seeing Bestie as your first song only widened the divide. MISA (bassist) is so creative. One of my favorites. There is no "star" in Band-Maid. They are all stars. Pick any song. ANY SONG!
PS: Someone else mentioned "The Warning" in another comment. They did Enter Sandman for Metalica's Black album. Check it out. It's different. They are also a great band.

MISA MISA MISA!!!!! this was 2018 they are even better now they don't rest on their laurels now you know their core sound any track is ok now a lot are different the genre bend a LOT Now you need to see "Hanabie" now as they are touring Aus in Nov and it will be a chance to see a Band live after re-acting to them. BTW,Misa has introduced 2 subsequent Black Cloud basses. The latest is shown on their recent (last week) new song release,Protect You,a commission for an anime which is very popular in France. It's a real banger. They have several commissioned songs for anime's. There is an anime producer affiliated with their primary label which is shown in their song,Unleash!!!!!. It's one of my favorite songs; the MV is the best.

Real Existence is MUCH closer to their core sound than Bestie, even though it's a pretty old song.
They're a hard rock band, so they're not gonna be BROOTAL. But they do add in a lot of double kicks and some metal riffs, so they kinda approach metal that way. But they've also got some punk energy. So they're kinda... thrash rock? But they also do a lot of densely layered, complicated arrangements with technical playing, and they've been moving in that direction as their career progressed. So they're kinda... tech thrash rock? One guy calls them "prog punk". Listen to two of their newest songs that aren't Bestie - Shambles and Protect You - and you'll see what I mean. Some folks are asking you to do Hate? which is a bit more straightforward but it's a certified banger.

I KNEW I wasn't the only one who would pick up on that vibe! There's just certain elements that closely mirror some of his key elements he throws into most solos that I noticed she was utilising.

Very good but nothing yet. Real Existence is like a training song for the public and the reactors. Seriously, you have no idea what's in front of you. This band is incredible at rock music and the craziest thing is... pick any BAND MAID song, live if possible, and be prepared for the impact. After years of listening to them and reflecting...I think I can say that they are already a fundamental band in the history of rock. Top 10 in the universe and history of rock and the best band of the 21st century. The girls are solid, round and devastating like a cannon ball and every shot is has 'a marvellous and happy consequence'. So far, for you... you have no idea but, we, the ' Maidiacs' will tech you with pleasure. Thanks
