“Confirmed Fix” Water leak on Chevy Truck (foggy windows wet floorboards)

  • I believed this issue is commonly over looked and I finally found the leak causing the floorboard of this Chevy Silverado truck to fill with water. This is a common issue on many different make and model vehicles including Sierra, Tahoe, Escalade, Avalanche. I originally suspected the antenna or a clogged drain under the upper valance but low and behold it was failing weatherstripping. I spent about 8 hrs investigating this problem and wanted to share to help others out.

    One of the best ways to find a water leak is to go and put baby powder around suspicious areas on the inside and then have someone soak the truck down with a water hose on slow and then start at the lower door and work their way up towards the top of the windshield. You can then see if it runs past the baby powder where it's possibly coming in. Another way is to use a real soapy water solution sprayed around outside the cab. Then use compressed air from the inside to blow out to see if you can get someone to see air bubbles coming out on the outside. This can be reversed but it's better to have the soapy solution on the outside blowing air from inside. Would really like to know if this fixed your water leak by caulking the seal or replacing it. I have done all the major fixes from front to back and I still have water coming in somewhere around the firewall area or windshield somehow.

    99-07 Silverado/Sierra upper roof rail weatherstrips have a small channel on the body that the weatherstrips hook on to runs along above the doors. The plastic windshield post mouldings also have the same channels ,BUT GM didnt lap the post moulding channel "under the roof channel and left a 3/4 to 1 inch gap between the two. When water seeps under the gasket it drips down between the two down onto the door gasket then can seep into the channel of the door gasket and run down to the kick panel and crossover ti the inside of the doorgsdket into the floor. I made connectors from a small peice of an aluminum can and glued them in with seam sealer to attach the two together. No more leak.

    Thank you. I had to buy a high mileage 2008 Yukon XL recently when my Tahoe died. It was really solid and mostly small issues which are almost done. The water thing I missed initially because of the entire car being outfitted with WeatherTech mats and window dressings. My driver side was saturated when I picked it up to clean it. Used towels to dry it in a day, but after the next rainfall it was full up again. So seeing this video, I had a massive storm heading in and decided to pull all the covers and close the door. Covered the entire weather strip area from the back of the driver door at the roof and down to the cowl. I wanted to see if it was the stripping or under the cowl (some say firewall). Sure enough. the Saran Wrap cover stuck like glue and the driver floor was bone dry after the large rainfall. I'll be getting a weather strip. In my case it looked like someone used to step on the weather strip to get in and out. It's a real mess. I'll be checking the passenger side as well since it too is wet, but not as bad as the driver side. Thanks for making this easy!

      @Josh Carlton new weatherstripping, did cracked the issue I was having, and both floorboards would get soaked with water. I believe only one of the weatherstripping seals failed, which was on the driver side a temporary fix is to take the weatherstripping and let the seam of the weatherstripping meet together at the bottom of the door jam.

    I assumed it was my door weather stripping but it does’t seem to be the issue . I talked to a GM mechanic. He says there is a joint below the windshield under the hood that is glued together. Basically the fire wall glued to the cab as I understand it .Cracks show up in the glued joint allowing water in . I can visually see water marks inside the firewalls above the pedals as well. He says to clean / scrape out the old adhesive and re apply . Apparently the fender may need to be removed if the leak is in the corner or in the vertical joint headed toward the bottom of firewall .
    I’ll be Parking in the garage until I find the time to confirm .

      I have come across this similar issue on various make and model vehicles and created videos to help others but unfortunately I haven’t done that on this truck. Could it be that you door or front windshield drain passages are blocked. Leaves and pine needles are commonly causing these issues. Pulling the upper valance off and removing the wipers to gain access to the area you would be repairing can be a bit time consuming.

    By drilling the hole you are letting the water out through the rocker panel which is good, however a new door weatherstrip seal will likely not fix the problem. I found my drivers side leak totally by accident. The leak is where the speaker housing mates to the door under the door panel. With age the speaker housing gasket shrinks on the very bottom and with the door closed water drips from the inside door panel on top of the carpet floor molding. When the system is working properly water drips down the inside of the door on top of the speaker housing then eventually exits through the bottom door drains. The problem is the speaker housing gasket is bad at the bottom of the speaker housing. After a rain storm feel the bottom of the speaker housing after you remove the door panel. It will be wet and you will see water droplets. I ran a bead of silicone on the face of the door speaker housing all the way around and reinstalled it. It is is now sealed up. The speakers in these trucks are usually junk after nine or ten years because water get to them, and after the seal on the face of the speaker housing goes bad the water drips on the carpet molding. If it rains long enough the track the vehicle wiring resides in overflows and then the carpeting gets wet. As a safeguard I will drill a drain hole in the event my fix fails, but so far no leaks.

    I am still researching this issue. Initially I thought that maybe it was faulty weather stripping around the passenger side door causing the floorboard on that side to get soaked anytime it rained or I washed my 2008 Avalanche. During the last rain I put a tarp over the cab of the entire cab of the truck since I haven't found where the leak is coming from yet. Sad to say my floor board got soaked again after two days of rain. It leads me to believe that the leak may be coming from the antenna cowl cover or upper valance at the bottom of the windshield since that is the only area that wasn't covered by the tarp. I will take some time this weekend to troubleshoot.

      Randy McLeod sounds like the Butyl tape is failing or the interior door drain may be clogged. That is the black adhesive that holds the door panel barrier in place. This is a super common issue on BMW vehicles.

    • @TweekerDan1984
      @TweekerDan1984  Před 4 lety +1

      Randy McLeod what happens is water runs down the window and instead of draining out the door drain when the seal starts to fail the water runs down the doors barrier and leaks into the panel where the seal is no longer sealing the barrier properly. Sometimes you can heat up the butyl tape and press the panel firmly to correct the issue. If that doesn’t work you would need to remove the tape and apply new tape.

    my 1995 cadillac fleetwood had this exact problem. Water would roll down in between the body and where the door weather strip attaches and would go under the stripping and fill the floor board with water. We are having the same issue on our 2008 3500 dually crew cab with a sun/moon roof. I'm thinking that the drain for the roof window is blocked since we have water coming in where the overhead lights are when it rains. If it rains a lot the water will also pool on driver side floor, wetting the carpet. The ceiling also gets wet on driver side where ceiling curves down along the driver door. I've also had the rear driverside ceiling corner of cab get wet. I think it all depends on the slope of my park, which leads me to thinking it's the drain for moon roof window or the seal there.

    Why are chevy trucks such pieces of shit? I have the same isdue in my avalanche. The floors are filling with water. Never had this issue until i bought a chevy. I also owned a 1987 camaro back in the day and it was a piece of shit too.
