Awesome video! Pokemon Crystal was one of the first games I ever played and till this day it's still one of my favs. It definitely has a special place in my heart and none of the other Pokemon games really did it for me as this one. I mean, I still play them but I'm nowhere near as invested in them as I am in this one.

Thanks! And I wish I had developed that much fondness for the second generation back when I was a kid. It seems like everyone always looks back so fondly on Crystal specifically and I feel like I missed out!

The second gen will always be my favorite one. I remember playing Pokémon Gold on my Game Boy Color back in the days ❤

i kinda disagree about the point about new types having such an impact and being a big addition
yes for the metagame, and series a whole, they were.
but umbreon was night exclusive, so if you didnt know about it you would not know how to add it to your team
murkrow and houndour are found in kanto, you would most likely have your team fully developed by then
sneasel is found in the ice path, right before the dragon gym, which is great- unless your playing gold and silver- where its found right before Mt Silver.
and the last one is tyranitar, found as a larvitar in mt silver, at level 20
for steel types you had magnemite and magneton, found relatively early on, but you may not realize they are steel type until you catch one, and you may not want one if you want new pokemon
forretreses from pineco, a headbutt only encounter, and its stuck with protect/takedown/selfdestruct until level 31
steelix and scizor both require a mirror coat, so if you didnt have anyone to trade with they are innaccessible
skarmory is great, but it doesnt exist in gold
so if you were playing gold, didnt have anyone to trade with or couldnt find a metal coat, didnt think to headbutt every tree on a route several times, or just didnt think pineco was cool, your only steel type was magnemite, which didnt even learn any steel type moves- and steel type was physical anyway.
the great bug type changes were just, heracross carrying every bug on their back, and giving fury cutter to a good chunk of mons.
    ghost types just got shadowball
dragon types got outrage and dragonbreath
i mean, all the changes were good and needed- but they were just implemented poorly due to poor placement

Play my copy of Gold every year on my N64 woth Pokemon Stadium 2 its still THE quintessential Pokemon experience in my eyes. Recently my wife got me a copy of Crystal and ive been playing it non stop for a month. Gen 2 Pokemon and Gen 5 have to be the best generations in my opinion

I'll add them to the list! I briefly discussed Bastion in a previous episode of "What's Worth Playing", but maybe it'll need its own episode some time.

It is a bit tough to go back to gen2 as a 33 yr old now with getting used to such great graphics in all other tech. I do play a little silver version here and there. I think I like soulsilver a bit better because of the updated graphics. But being about 9-10 back when these came out, it was a whole new world. Pokémon consumed me as a kid. It still does lol. My favorite games are fire red, soul silver, and emerald. Gen1-gen3 is the best ever. I don’t play anything past that.

    • @Shouperman
      @Shouperman Před měsícem +1

I'm in the same boat. The graphics don't bother me too much, but playing SoulSilver with the gb sounds on is my preferred method (that and crystal legacy). And I never touched anything past gen 3, until a couple years ago. If you haven't tried out gen 4, I recommend it. I played Pearl and genuinely hadn't had as much fun playing a Pokémon game since I first booted up Silver back in 2000. What made it really fun was being strategic though and using moves other than just damaging ones like we all used to do as kids and learning what types to bring to the next gym and what the levels were after potentially failing. Literally felt like a child again. I got like a third of the way through White and basically quit. ORAS will be the only games I touch that came out after Gen 4 now. The games just feel like they've lost their magic after what we all grew up on.
Apologies for the long winded ramble😅

Found you for the Donkey Kong video, and have been hooked.
Have to wonder if will see you do Gen 6 in time with Legends ZA?
And if you will do more DKC?
Regardless, great work. Look forward to seeing more.

    *SPOILER WARNING*

I remember getting this game and having my mind blown that you can go through all of Kanto after you beat the Elite Four and Champion, then having it blown again when you collect all of Kanto's gym badges and you can go to Mt. Silver and face off against Red, the protagonist of Pokemon Red and Blue! Apparently this was thanks to Satoru Iwata, who managed to fit all of that into Pokemon Gold and Silver's game cartridges. He was a master programmer, that man.
This game definitely felt more polished compared to the first generation, along with the upgrade in visuals thanks to the Game Boy Color's technology, not to mention several series staples started within this generation (for better or for worse). I feel almost as nostaglic for this generation as I do the first, since I was still riding off the highs of Poke-mania at the time. Really neat stuff, I hope they get ported to or released on Nintendo Switch Online.

Your defence of the level curve omits one massive detail. Yes, you can interpret it as "showing that you're only halfway done with the game," but the problem is the Kanto gym leaders are barely any higher levelled than the elite four to begin with. By the time you get to Blue, who you can only challenge after defeating the rest of the Kanto gym leaders, you've gone through two whole regions and still haven't encountered a trainer with level 60 Pokemon. He's only ten levels higher than Lance. No, the levelling is objectively terrible in these games.

Gen 1 & 2 are both special and are the best ones. I slightly prefer gen 1 because I have a bit more nostalgia for it, but gen 2 was still incredible and the peak of the series in most of the important ways. The last two gens are a soulless, woke embarrassment, which is just disappointing.
