This video is to bring you a closer look at the Schlage L9080 06A Storeroom Function Mortise Lock.
The L means that is Schlage mortise lock
The 9080 is the function, that means is a storeroom function where the exterior of the lock is always locked, meaning levered or not they are always rigid, you can never get in except with a use of a key cylinder.
The interior side in a storeroom function means is always unlocked, always aloud you to exit immediately without any obstacle.
The 06 is the lever design ans A is the Rose design.
This video will serve as a quick tutorial as how to install mortise locks.
First step is to make sure the door is prepared correctly per the Template.
This is the mortise case.
First of all you are going to get your exterior lever, you will know it's the exterior because will have the rose already attached to it in one piece assemble; have your interior lever and this is the 06 part of the part number and this have the satin chrome finish.
You have the A part which is the 2 1/8" Rose, the most common rose that you will see.
You will get an armored front, this is the piece of the hardwood that attached to the face of lock.
You will also get the two tiny little screws to attache the armored front, attached to this holes here and here.
You will get a strike plate, a dust box and a two screws for attaching.
Your dust box is intended to be installed behind so you wont see the wood or inside the steel frame.
This strike plate is a standard dimension from the center line to the lip.
This strikes has two holes which is not necessary for 9080 function because is not deadbolt, but is completely reversible .
You will get screws for the strike and another identical pack of screws, that will hold the lock body on to the metal door or wood door, and the screws are all a combination of thread.
Installation actually is extremely easy on these lock.
You will take your exterior trim , you are going to have a spring cage, they are two item that kind of look similar but they are different.
The spring gauge is vital to be installed first. You will place this in the door based on your lever needs to rotates because your spin cage can spin only in one direction.
So, first place that down you then going to thread these brass posts as far down as will go and at this point once you will have the brass posts in , your exterior is basically done.
After that you're going to get two spindles and two springs.
So you will need one spindle and one spring, this mounts to the hob into the lock body, then you will try to get all this through the door, the two posts has to go through these two holes that you see on the lock case and then you need to get them to come out the other side because that spring is there.
At that point you have to take the other spindle and other spring, you will attache this here, then the other item that looks like spring cage but is not is going to mount, to fit on the face of the door. Now you are going to take this mounting hob, you are gonna place that on the face of the door and insert the screws through here and then you will tide en down to the the taped hole down here on the plug, and once you have that all plug in down it look like that.
You rose will go over and then the inside of the lever is threaded on to that hob.
The final piece you will get with the screw packages is the spanner range, us to tide en inside the lever and at that point you are done.
Schlage makes it extremely easy to change the hand of the lock.
The instructions are on every mortise case that comes from Schlage.
Basically you can grab this, you can pull the latch bolt out and spin it, then at that point is a catch screw. You rotate this in a proper orientation, so right now this will be set for a right hand door or a left hand door if this would be the key side.
You've got this catch screw which you see here, has always to be inside for proper function.
The final part to install is the cylinder.
This cylinder is a Schlage cylinder but it's a BD configuration means that it's prep for a small format interchangeable core.
You will thread that into you lock hole, very very carefully.

I just bought a schlage L9080 Mortise lock and the parts came with 1 spring cage and 1 spacer block --- not 2 spring cages to be installed on this model.
I appreciate your video because i had a problem installing this lock due to a metal door having a thickness under 1 3/4" thickness. The brass post were extending 1/4" past the inside portion of the door which resulted in not having a tight fitting lock - the lock was loose. your video has help me solve that problem. Cheers Brent
Thanks. I lost the key to this door years ago. I never had a problem walking around, but always wondered why I couldn't unlock the outside. I was curious and decided to fidget with it today. I'm going to see about rekeying the cylinder in the next week.
HI Richard
Great Video but doesn't the springcage part go onto the inside lever handle since the outside handle assembly is rigid. I thought the springcage was installed on the movable handle side.
I have a question I have the lock installed but when I engage the lock and pull handle down from outside it still unlocks?? Is it the lock bolt? I just watched this video and am gonna check the bolt on them to make sure it's on the inside... I have one that works and 2 that won't stay locked..
Can you do a tutorial on L9453 please
for sure it does but you would still have two spring cages for the lock. Any other clarifications let me know.
I was patiently waiting for your demonstration of how to change the lock type from fail secure to fail safe, but either I didn't pay attention well enough or you didn't show it. :(
You are correct in the latter. This is a non-electrified lock.
Hi Dave! Thanks for the helpful video. I’m on a job now where I’m installing these same locksets, and am consistently having the same two problems on each one that I do- hoping you might have some ideas. The first thing is that the interior-side handle has very wimpy “spring-up” action when I turn it. The second thing is none of my cylinders function when I screw them in. I’ve tried it with and without the spacer collar and wave washer. Any ideas you may have would be hugely appreciated!!
Regarding the spring, does the interior spring cage work when you install it on the exterior side? Regarding the cylinder, can you tell me what cam you have installed on the back of the mortise cylinder?
Thanks for the quick response! unfortunately already did that and the case still opens freely from outside when deadbolt thrown.. seems the push button rocker at bottom is major functioning issue/ Help.. Im volunteering at a pet rescue and need to get this place locked up correctly. any ideas would be appreciated.. emailed calroyal but haven't heard back as yet.. may of been a good idea to do it before closing? hahahah.. oh well funtimes. Thanks again
The hubs need to be reversed inside the lock body. These are the two stacked items that the spindle(s) pass through. The problem you have when change from an inswing (RH) to an outswing (LHR) the now eveterior lever/knob will always operate. Remove the lock case reverse the order of the hubs, replace case and test operation. I do not have a Cal-Royal lock body here to make a video of - sorry.
What model would I use if I wanted a non-locking handle that was previosly a storeroom lock? 9010, got it.
The passage function of the Schlage L9000 would be the l9010 as seen here
absupply.net/schlage-l9010-06a-passage-function-mortise-lock-14170.aspx
If you're going to remove that storeroom lock from the door and convert it to a passage function he will certainly need to purchase the mortise cassette only however you also need a dummy cylinder to fill in that hole that has been prepped for the keyed cylinder on the secured side of the door.
Please feel free to reach out to our sales department for assistance with processing this order.
Cool Info! Do you have any experience with the Cal Royal NM8453 mortise entry lock? Need to switch from RH to LHR.. Would of helped had i ordered it correctly, haha..Should of known better as i was a schlage and Cal Royal dealer in the 80's and 90's..Thanks for any input, Greg
that one is easy as well: www.cal-royal.com/products/templates/Instructions%20-%20How%20to%20Reverse%20Mortise%20Lock.pdf
Hi! Is it possible to have the inside lever inoperative? We changed our mind and we would like both side to be always lock. Thank you,
It is indeed possible to have both sides of the lockset rigid with trim that would not operate the lockset. Before proceeding with this type of modification consider how you would operate the lock from the egress side of the opening as this type of lock, known as an Institutional type lock (review the ANSI F30 function) whose operational description would be - Latchbolt retracted by key from either side, Knob/lever on both sides always inoperative, Auxiliary latch deadlocks latchbolt when door is closed, would certainly be a violation of code for almost all occupancy types with the exception of most notably Detention and Correction type occupancies.
hello, was wondering if you have ever come across, a KP keypad mortise lock before. NEED HELP !!!

Can this door lock be configured to unlock and stay unlocked?
this is no way to leave the L9080 lock set to stay unlocked from the ingress side of the lock.
Hello there , good info thx , I have a question can you removed the lock function on this one and leave it open all the time ? Please let me know thx
The proper way would be to replace the mortise cassette with a passage function though having said this you could modify the interior of that mortise cassette such that it never locked.
@@absupplynet by any chance do you know the passage cassette that is compatible with this one , please let me know , and thank you so much for replying.🙏

How do i remove the handles on the L9080?
You will use a spanner wrench on the inside stem that will permit you to get the inside lever off at which point you can gain access to the screws that hold the exterior trim on. The spanner wrench I'm referring to is the Schlage 021415 Spanner Wrench For L-Series Locks and can be seen here
absupply.net/schlage-021415-spanner-wrench-for-l-series-locks.aspx
and the Installation instructions can be seen here:
absupply.net/ext/schlage-L9000-install.pdf
If the levers are round instead of flat is it still the same model number?
it is not. The 03 is a common round, tubular lever design. Post a photo of the lever you are matching and we will advise the part number.
@@absupplynet Do you have to have that wrench to take the inside handle off?
@@Maxid1 Yes you would need that. It is called a spanner wrench and can be seen here: absupply.net/schlage-021415-spanner-wrench-for-l-series-locks.aspx
What is the model # for the same type but bedroom door?
Wait, the L9473-03?
