Shopping List for How to Install a Vintage Lockset:
- mortise lockset
- 2x6 and 1/2-plywood scrap, used to make a jig for supporting the portable drill press
- scrap board, for clamping to door when drilling doorknob hole
Tools for How to Install a Vintage Lockset:
- utility knife, used to trace around lock mortise
- combination square, for marking the mortise outline onto the door edge
- hammer and chisel, used to form mortise after boring out the holes
- drill with portable drill press and assorted spade bits, used to bore out mortise
- clamp, used to hold a scrap board to the door when drilling the doorknob hole
- vacuum, for cleaning wood chips out of mortise

Love how you are so good your hand is like a speed square....Tommy you are the man !!
When setting the depth for the spindle hole instead of marking through the hole in the lock I use my adjustable square as a depth gauge resting it on the face of the lock and setting it half way across the spindle hole in the lock. Takes a couple of seconds longer but more accurate.

i know an old house with thoes knobs and the solid wood doors..they look great ... the lockset was made by corbin.. which is similar to Stanley today

Wow, he made that look easy. It's not. The chisele takes some skill.
Great skills of course but what makes these clips more enjoyable than most is the chemistry between Tommy & Kevin.

Tried this and I have nowhere near Tom's skills. Of course I failed, Luckily I was practicing on scrap 2x4 about the same thickness as my door. What worked for me was a router with a 3/4 inch bit to set the outside trim followed by a 1/2 by 2 inch long router bit to route out the mortise using the jig in the video for the drill guide support with a straight edge screwed to it. Squared up the edges with a chisel, very simple. I just clamped a couple giant blocks of wood to the door as a door buck to hold it steady.
The keyhole was not drilled 🤔
What do you Do if the Door already has a 2 1/2 inch pre drilled … .. Like they Master Craft at Menards

As usual he didn’t show us anything, stoves usually need to be converted to propane, when installed they need to be leveled, the flame needs to adjusted on all burners, so leave it to This Old House to show us nothing!
huh.......this is about a lock....
Why would you show someone how to install a 65 year old lock that has weak spring steel in it that could break at any time. Not worth it
I'm going to assume this isn't going to be somebody's front door in the center of a meth neighborhood so I wouldn't worry so much about it
They just haven't shown the installation of the deadbolt.
Who's to say it's for an exterior door, and any lock can break at any time it's just for show!
i know they are. but if you're doing it for antique look, you can easily buy the outer pieces for the look.
a new lockset made in china broke after 2 years after being installed in a rental house... the old lock has been here for 65 + years
More like handyman install. Terrible. Woodworker could have done better and quicker. No jig needed.
