2013 Nissan Xterra PRO-4X Muddy Off-Road Colorado Review (Part 1)

  • ( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2013 Nissan Xterra PRO-4X is a very off-road worthy traditional SUV. In other words it is not one of those new fangled crossovers. Instead it has a traditional body on frame design with a normally aspirated powerful V6 engine. And since we are testing the top of the line PRO-4X Xterra, we also get all of the good off-road bits like stiffer shocks and underbody protection. In another fun and informative TFLcar off-road review we take the 2013 Nissan Xterra PRO-4X up to the top of our off-road trail deep in t he Colorado Rocky Mountains. How does the 2013 Nissan Xterra PRO-4X do when the road turns rocky muddy and steep? Just watch this video to find out.

    It is to bad that Nissan as elected to discontinue the X. But truth be told I would rather she die than be bastardized into some CUV.

    "If it had a manual transmission I'd buy it, since it doesn't, I'd say lease it". The Xterra comes in both 5-speed automatic as well as a 6-speed manual. Also, I'm surprised you guys didn't mention any of the features the Pro4X comes with like a locking rear diff and the hill descent control. In fact, you didnt talk about ANY of the features of this rig.

      Like most of us Americans, the only Nissans that they know about are a 370Z or GT-R...It would shock a lot of USA off road boys to learn that oversea, the Nissan Patrol is second ONLY to the Land Cruiser in ability and numbers, and actually outperforms the LC in the desert!!!...There are more than just Jeeps out there guys....

    • @DRTMaverick
      @DRTMaverick Před 4 lety +1

      @@freedomrider266 Yeah and in the states the Xterra is the FJ Cruiser's competition. I'd love patrols here, but I'd also love if you guys had Xterras there, I think the Navara guys would appreciate them at least.
      My xterra currently has a Nissan Titan front IFS suspension and diff swapped in. live.staticflickr.com/65535/50212511237_90fa78031b_h.jpg

    Thanks a lot! Yes, please - give me some ideas! There is one thing: we use this trail (the Left Hand Canyon ORV trail) because it is our measuring stick for "basic" off road driving. Sure, we could go and do serious boulder-bashing, but that would take us away from a trail we can ascertain the basic characteristics of the vehicle at hand. We use the same location because we know it and know the various levels of ability needed for each vehicle. Still, I'm always game for a new ORV trail. Thanks!

    People that dismiss this Xterra favoring the FJ I think they over simplify life. This Xterra is way more comfortable in long journeys and in city. It drives almost like a sedan, in my opinion. This is a no nonsense car. It got all you want to have in a car, and yes, it can go off road as any unmodified jeep wrangler. The only complaint is the fuel MPG... bad. All Nissan cars have bad MPG. And yes, they are not pretty. But yes, they are comfortable compared to Toyotas.

    Jeeps have had 4 cylinder engines over the years, but none that were Fords. Over the years they did use some GM and even Audi 4 cylinders and even a Renault 4 cylinder diesel, but no Pinto motors. Not that it would have been a bad thing. The Ford 2.3 was a good engine and is still in widespread use in various motorsports classes across the country.

    Not mentioned in the review, the 4.0 is a stroked version of the 3.5L, and it's got a low range transfer case. That combo typically works well for both on-road and off-road without being a tractor on the road. Still, a modern diesel might be nice. They are always heavy and expensive though.

    1guy: Thanx for the erudite comment - nice to see here. And I stand corrected…I was getting my Pinto/G.M Iron Duke/Jeep lore wrong, mixing it with my old International Scout’s AMC 258cu 6. Then I started confusing all the diesel Jeepney’s left over from WWII in the Philippines - and finally remember the Ford 2.3 was used at one time in the Mustang SVO? Thanx for the clarification!

    you mean rear locker that operates more like the FJ's locker does? i totally agree with that, you made it sound like the pro-4x doesn't come with a locker, which if you own one, you know it does. BTW you can bypass the BS nissan limitations on the rear locker pretty easily.
