*Read before you comment; "it wasn't just the Germans"* This video treats the use of methamphetamine by the German Wehrmacht and its cultural background. The purpose of this video is not to attribute any atrocities that the Nazis perpetrated to that they were simply on drugs - we know that this was not a contributing factor to what they did, although it perhaps influenced _how_ they did it. It is also not the purpose of this video to single out Germany as the only belligerent to use drugs in WW2. As we point out in the video, many belligerents (to not say all) used drugs, especially amphetamines during WW2. In fact amphetamines are still in official, monitored used by for instance the US Army in some situations to this day. However, the Wehrmacht and a few of the Axis allies used _methamphetamine_ which is different than amphetamine as the effects of meth is unpredictable and comes on faster and harder. These unpredictable effects include hallucinations and delusions, which amphetamines do not induce, or at least to a lesser and more predictable degree. Methamphetamine metabolizes into amphetamine in the body, but in that process it creates a number of side effects that contribute to its unstable effects. Of course this was poorly understood in 1940 and meth was also available commercially over the counter in many places like the US and Australia, mostly as a dieting pill and (somewhat ironically) an anti-depressant. While amphetamines like Benzedrine are still administered by doctors for certain conditions, methamphetamine is now known to be a very dangerous, potentially lethal, drug that only has recreational use, and in 2019 it is therefore illegal almost everywhere in the world. Last but not least, the Wehrmacht was singular in how liberal they were in distributing drugs to the troops, at least to begin with. It is important to also point out that beside the official use of drugs, many soldiers throughout the ages have resorted to intoxicating themselves to deal with the unfathomable horrors of war, and in this respect WW2 was no different. We will cover drug use by other belligerents and in general during the war in future videos.

This all had no effect on drug policy outside Germany. The rest of the world was faster in regulating for instance cocaine and heroin already in. the 1920s, and Germany was faster (due to this) in delegalizing meth. It took until the sixties for most other nations to follow suite.

It's just trying to cover everything about the war, and this is one of many videos about tools and tactics used in WWII. Keep up the great work!

Thanks! Many people, also in this comment section, fail to see how just because it happened, doesn't mean that it explains Germany's victory, their speed, their crimes, the pause before Dunkirk and more. Just like us covering the use of drugs in the war doesn't mean that we attribute any of the above stated aspects to said drug use..

Story from later point of war about Pervitin and its overdose effects:
Corporal Aimo Koivunen of the Finnish Defence Forces was on patrol during March 1944 with his team. He was on his mission's third day, on -20 to -30 degrees Celsius climate of Lappland.
His team was attacked by the Soviets. Although they managed to escape, Soviets pursued them. They were exhausted, but then Koivunen remembered that he had the patrol's entire supply of Pervitin (30 tablets). Due to skiing speed and gloves, he got frustrated with the pill container, dumped all on his hand and swallowed them all. Normal procedure was *ONE* pill under dire circumstances.
He sped off, but eventually started hallucinating and got separated from the team. The team couldn't control him nor could they really shout after him, as they were possibly near their enemies.
A week later, he was admitted into a Finnish hospital. After a week, his resting heart rate was 200 BPM (normally around 60 BPM). He had traveled 400 or so kilometers on skis, surviving only on pines and a single bird he had managed to kill. He only weighted 43 kilograms.
Oh, he also had managed to step on a mine. And he kept on skiing afterwards.

These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. I knew of a guy right here in my hometown who cooked and used meth and went nuts one night thinking the trees in his yard were giants about to attack him. He ended up cutting 80-100ft. pine trees down on his house with a chainsaw thinking he was "cutting off the giant's feet".
