- In our last video, we cranked and cranked and cranked and could not get the engine in Big Richard to fire to save our lives. Since then, Dr. Art, in surgically clean fashion, has torn the engine down, and to our surprise it was loaded with a variety of substances that could only be the result of taking an extended dip in filthy flood waters.

Wait a minute. Hold on. Um.....is "Uncle Tony" Tony DeFeo?? Cars Illustrated Tony DeFeo? Dude. I'm 57, hard core car guy my whole life and reading what Tony DeFeo wrote in Cars Illustrated had a HUGE impact on my life. Dude ordered a 5.0 Mustang with ZERO options. Hand crank windows and was funny as hell. Seriously, I bought every single issue and still have them. Best car mag ever. I'd take the issues down to Main Street where we cruised and read that shit out loud to the guys and we would laugh oh my God. My best friend ordered a 95 Z28 with no T Tops, HAND CRANK WINDOWS, no rear defogger, to get it as light as possible and we kept saying he was ordering the "Tony DeFeo Special". But the best thing you have ever done Tony was stand up for Steve Magnante the way you did. I have one of Steve's signed Barrett Jackson notebooks and freaking treasure it. Steve is such a car guy treasure. Thank you for helping him the way you did.
Yes, he's that Tony DeFeo. . . .
Yep it's the same guy from back then. We all been here for a few years, you've got some catching up to do.😂
Muscle mustang and fast Ford's magazines people!!?
Yessir!
"If you think we'd just crank it for 5 seconds and then quit, You're watching the wrong channel" Priceless Uncle Tony. Don't stop now, keep cranking.
New UTG shirt "Keep on Cranking!"
Personally I thought the Starter was the CHAMP of the whole video.
The started knew things and sacrificed itself before it was too late. RIP Legend.
LOL I said same thing , they need to gold plate that starter and frame it
For real
For sure! It wasn't a Dorman reman
That starter was an absolute HERO. To think it took all that abuse with just as much flood damage as the engine received, they really don't make them like that anymore 😅
The fact that motor actually turned over at all is impressive
I love the fact that oil was mixed into the squirt bottle, but not mentioned. I had made a comment of me doing that in the last video. My mentor, (now passed) showed me that trick way back. I'm glad that it didn't fire up and try to pump that crap into the system.
yeah, your last line goes back to the idea of "when it won't work, stop what you're doing and figure out why". Even if he got it running with all that in its system, as soon as the engine got under load it may have crapped the bed. that's why sometimes getting it to fire is just a false positive.
he had to say that beicuse i called him out . in comment saying dump oil down the carb it would have started. the slug had nothing to due with it all cars from the 70 did that
Dont forget the acetone.
Acetone increases the vaporization of gasoline to increase or assist combustion.
(for all the "I ama smarter than you" people out there, acetone is also a solvent that can break down many different plastics.
So I advise against using it in modern fueling systems.
No problem you two, those in the know , know you were just having some fun!
The internet thinks Tony and Dr. Art started working on engines 10 minutes before they filmed yesterday's video.
All the Muppet does is talk alot
@@yamaha226I’ll be waiting eagerly for y it to upload your resume but I bet a muppet like you doesn’t have one.
@@yamaha226lol you’ve made over 30 comments in his videos lol he’s living rent free in your head bahahaha. What a loser you are 😂😂
It's official it is completely impossible to fix stupid! as in
Referring to a legend in the automotive repair and comparison literature industry 'A Muppet!' Uncle Tony isn't Muppet like in any way, he's a direct relative of Dr. Smith from the TV show lost in space from the 1960s only Tony isn't intimidated by technical milestones like the robot 🤖, water, air and spine 😂! Go Tony and keep on brining that Mopar Bible to us one dog-eared page at a time! I grew up with 8 uncles who were all mechanical wizards! at least to me anyhow! My uncle Joe had a 68 vett that he stuck a 426 Hemi into. 😮 it was a rocket ship on wheels and the talk of queens between muscle car fanatics! Back in the day he would run it on the BQE connecting highway section on the weekends. It was I think a full 1/8 mile with the off ramp of doom. Manny a dumb ass would come off the ramp way in excess of what would be considered safe or reasonable and be launched skyward in an unplanned unforseen right handed take off that wasted a lot of really nice cars.
I can’t wait to see that trans. Hopefully the valve body is ok. Better check the diff!
Just want to say that not only do I not crank more than 1 second before tearing it down, but I also go ahead and re ring at 20 minutes of run time and change the oil every 2 miles 🤣🤣
I prefer to just leave the oil pan off and hook the pickup to a drum of oil. That way it’s always fresh oil to the bearings.
Why do all that work? Just drop a new crate engine in every time.
Yesterday I toothbrushed my frame to keep away cavities.Twice a week rain or shine
When Art cleans it all up it will run like a clock. Then this truck will get a fresh 426 Hemi and now there is a spare 318 motor hanging around for another project cool
It's getting Kiwi's 392 Hemi he was going to put that in his 59 Plymouth wagon...
Gee,I half ass watch videos once and remember(I usually conduct business on my laptop at the same time)most people do not have a good memory..I know I am blessed with the smart gene(just being an ass)!
But nonetheless probably confusing,so again..Kiwi is using his 392 HEMI not Tony's 426 Hemi he welded up :) Have a Great Day.
Years ago (40+) at the community college auto program I was enrolled at, we received a donated car from GM that had been in a flood. The trunk was still full of water. Drained the oil and put in new. It cranked for awhile but fired off. It blew a lot of water out of the exhaust system across the floor.
Note: We took spark plugs out before turning over in case any bores still had water in them.
I'm surprised no one pulled plugs and put an endoscope down the hole. I hope the bores ar ok.
Its so easy nowadays and tells you so much.
okay internet mechanic
Tony is definitely Old School and probably eschews such modern technical gizmos, but yours is a good suggestion that could benefit someone new to the hobby or even the infrequent wrencher who might say to himself "Oh yeah, I forgot about those camera gadgets!"
Extreme schmoo is what you've got in that motor - grody to the max!
I remember Grody too the max... Ain't it just ain't it 😜 lols
He ain't lying about not having feelings. Notice how his kids are never around. 😊
That'll happen with the unknown. Good thing the starter stopped you. Just goes to show you everything happens for a reason now you should be able to clean it up and Salvage it.👍 Thanks for the follow-up and keep us posted and let us know when it's for sale. LoL 🤔
Flood Sludge, I love it!! I'm sure Dr. Art will do an excellent job rebuilding the engine for Big Richard. Can't wait to hear it run with the Birthday Cam the Dr. Art is getting for Kiwi.
All things considered, Tony really pulled a miracle for getting that wounded crap to kind of run. Nobody else would have or could have. And if you hate 318's, watch this video again. Let's see your 2021 whatever survive this abuse and still run
Everybody is an expert in their own minds. When it comes to actually doing the work, not so much. You know what opinions are like they all have one.
Never was first to watch before. Nice seeing your comment in the Great Lakes Drag-away video. You, Garlets and Arfons are legendary people.
I was 16 when we had a flood in Rapid City SD, 1972. It wiped out several car dealerships and we saw a lot of engines like yours. Good try, trying to get it to run👍
We had a massive flood in Corning, NY the same year. I was still a preschooler but still remember the epithet “flood car”.
You didn't check the differentialator.
I didn't post any comments, but let's be fair. That was awful to watch. I believe it was stated that something to the effect of "two days" were spent cranking that thing over. And what? A half tank of gas? I mean they do have those inspection cameras where you can look down the bore.
At least you found the reason for the pee smell, UT! Trying to fire the gas mixed with dirt in the cylinders! 😁😄
I have revived several long sitting engines , my record is 30 years with a 1953 F100. Then my summer daily driven Javelin that sat 28 years. My key trick is to soak the carb and spark plug holes with PB Blaster for weeks (not days). And do NOT try to roll it first, even a small movement with rusted cylinders can brake rings and score the walls. Just be patient.
I love ya Tony, If ya had any feelings to hurt you would have been in bad shape. Good for you, let the hate roll off your back like water off a duck.
Still remarkable the engine fired off 2 or 3 cylinders while the cylinders looked like that!
Another thing is the Starter motor that has been flooded with dirt was rotating the engine with all the gunk inside with a lot of resistance i'd imagine.
Amazing.
This is the reason I did not say anything, as I saw what Tony pulled out of the engine while he was trying to start it when he said looked like a rat's nest might be in the lifter valley. And what Tony said about starting old engines is mostly true, it is also a reason why you do not let an old engine go back to sitting for long periods of time. My dad had an old 1948 Ford F-1, that had sat for many years just like the 1960's Thunderbird that he had which had sat for 15 years. If you did not go out their and start those old engines every day or every week they would be hard to start, you could still get them started but they would be hard to start. It is also why they said you never want to work on a flood car/truck, as that silt gets into freaking everything and the smell is next to impossible to get rid of.
I'll be brutal on this one. 😆 🤣
You guys know what you're doing, people on the Internet always have something general to say they would never say to you personally face to face
Dude, I never commented at all, men with your experience it was obvious to me that you had tried everything, and hell, I'm 200 miles away, how could I even think about judging your process!!!!!! ( And yes I have 35 years experience). A real mechanic would never second guess y'all)
" you guys are watching the wrong chanel", Legend
You guys did your absolute best because we only see a small part of what gose on I don't say nasty things about what you guys do it was fun watching you struggle with it
That is the Uncle Tony I know!👍
Its amazing it came as close as it did to starting with all that sediment inside.......
YOU GUYS KNOW WHAT YOU R DOING. LOOK AT ALL THE KOOL N AWESOME STUFF THAT YOU FIX. N BUILD.
Uncle Tony's Engine seasoning...... should put it in a a kitchen style seasoning bottle and sell it lol
Im from New York too Tony leave the feeling at home homie
I bought a junkyard 283 that wouldn't turn over, so I figured it was seized. Took off the heads, and one cylinder was full of cat litter/speedy dry!
The bores had a fine glaze of rust, but some ATF and a chain wrench loosened that mouse up nice. It never had any compression issues, except when I compressed it into a field and totalled the car, but I won the drag race.
I'd pop all the core plugs and get all the crud you can out of the water jackets too. Id imagine you're probably doing that anyway.
heck, if any of it got into the cooling system, the radiator needs a flush, too. This is why insurance companies scrap flood cars. There's potential electrical issues, if the rear axle has a vent tube then its gucked up as well, the transmission should get looked at....
Unlikely to have flood water in the cooling system>>it is a closed system.
@@hotpuppy1 it's supposed to be, until it leaks. Just like that lifter valley and oiling system should be closed--but gunk still got in. Fact is, ANY time you do an engine swap, the radiator has all the scale from the cooling system and if it isn't flushed out, it goes right back into your nice clean block again.
If a engine is rust stuck and I take head's off I "Rose bud" my acetolene torch and swirl it on piston"just as if engine was running" for about 10 sec it usually free's up ring's. I scuff up cylinder wall with scotch bite pad as long as it's not all Dirt or Rust then I clean it with a Rag, Then I spray "Freeze off"
Lol those comments were beating you guys up. I can't wait to see this.
That one looks like Stuntman gave it a Fabuloso and sackrete tuneup.
That guy’s resting face default is an expression I can only describe as “My god, who farted, and what the hell did they eat to make it SMELL like that?!” 😆😆🤣🤣
I was going to comment, but I figured there was stuff going on not seen or mentioned. I washed the rings out on a port fuel injection motor v6 and strait motor oil in the cylinders did the trick. I thought you guys had to have something like this it's something you would have not over looked. Thanks.
Lol, "silt" is the word you are probably looking for.
No worries, I get stuck on words that I know quite well but during conversation those same words will elude me like they are running away from something scarey.
Flowing water will keep "silt" in suspension until the water has had time to sit still.
Looks like it should clean up pretty easy though still a pain in the butt.
I am excited to see the future progress.
😁
Thanks
COOP

new lesson to be learned
I have been known to take a similar engine outside & hit it with a pressure washer after first giving it a goodly wet down with kerosene. What a mess. Of course, it was dismantled immediately after & given a second cleaning in a parts washer, while the block went off to the machine shop for a good hot tank job. It may have been worn a bit, but a good overhaul [rings, bearings, valve job etc.] & it ran good as noo for years. So clean it, overhaul it & love it.
Earth wind and NO fire.
I admit I watched that whole turkey of a video, I felt sure you were going to get a huge flame backfire from the carb.
At this point I'd make sure you check the trans in the rear end to make sure no water got in there
YOU'RE GREAT TONY MASTER, YOU'VE DOWNLOADED THE ENGINE BRAVO, NOW THAT ENGINE WILL BE CLEANED AND REPAIRED IN A GREAT WAY, NEW GASKET SET, NEW OIL FILTER, AIR FILTER, EVEN NEW SPARK PLUGS WILL BE INSTALLED, AND NEW ENGINE OIL WILL BE INSTALLED, COOLING WATER, ANTIFREEZE, HOSES, CABLES WILL BE RENEWED, MAYBE THE PISTON SET WILL CHANGE THE CYLINDER, IT'S VERY ENJOYABLE, I WANT YOU TO TAKE A VIDEO OF THESE STAGES, TONY MASTER, AND I WANT TO SEE THE ENGINE WORK AFTER IT'S DONE, I WISH YOU SUCCESS.
thank you for explaining in this video; because I thought for a moment it was one of your troll videos baiting comment interaction lol
The comments from the last video, were hilarious!!!
Mondo carnage! My favorite term for this sort of thing is... aquafunge.
Cool, I've seen swamped engines before doing mud bogs. Imagine that with metal bits when it hydrolocks! I've also seen the oil pick up plugged like that after an armchair mechanic recommended diesel oil for an engine that was run on sae 30 grade non-detergent for the past 50+ years.
The dread of the clean-up on that one, but the curiosity of how bad it is keeps you moving though it.
Hi Uncle Tony, Maple Motors has a 66 Charger for sale. It would be great if you could evaluate it it like you did on the other two Mopars. Not looking for you to trash talk the car, just your honest opinion. Thanks 👍
That Charger is a train wreck..
lol! What a mess! Last motor I saw like that ( it was running to) had pennzoil in it. That thing was gone. I don’t even think you should use that transmission. Wow. Motor looks like that I you have to take the pan off. Good luck.
Flood muck. More like flucking mud!
Uncle Gary always says when you build a race engine. Its a brand new worn out engine😅
Yes, the disease of all time, "Foot In Mouth", better to be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.
Surprisingly infectious, that one.
Glad you have no feeling's, as I find those sort a bit hard to deal with, they just don't think about anyone other than themselves.
The only thing I mostly seen was about working that starter so hard.
I can't believe people would think that Uncle Tony wouldn't do the standard things when trying to get an old engine to start
Keyboard mechanics. . . .
Hey Tony maybe you can make a new T-Shirt the flood Sludge T-Shirt 🤣🤣🤣
Embrace the Sludge!!!
I think the video of you trying to start it was great.
I tried to read the thumbnail photo and instantly become concerned I was having a stroke. 😂
Who would have guessed you both gave it a good. shot at getting it going keep up the projects
Pretty sure I saw Floodmuck in a little club in Tacoma back in 93.
"Flood Muck" that's a t-shirt and " If I had feelings you would have killed me" lol
I know everything.....
Because i watch a lot of edited videos.. on starting engines..
Hahaha.....
You know what i would've done ..
Hahaha ....
THE WAY OF GEARHEAD MONK..
keep on wrenching folk's...
@∅
Put the 361 propan engine in the truck. it`s be a nice test run for the engine on Power Tour
Probably wont find propane easily and the truck will need to be towed.
this is officially a comedy channel bwahaahahhaahhaa
Damned y'all, you found my lawn furniture from the 2010 flood 😂 small sediment issue, a light hosing and a little round up to keep the weeds from sprouting and your good, it's a Chrysler product...it will run with zero oil pressure 😂
Thats why i said on the last video i fill the cylinders up with pb blaster. Then spin the motor over with the spark plugs removed to blow all the junk out.
I watched the entire other video. It was amusing. I've been there and done all of that. And now, after being patient, I, we know what happened.
Saw one like that it drove the guy nuts until he pulled the head off that 4 cyl . there was all this carbon that dropped and hung the valves open so he sent the head out and the thing ran perfect after a cleanup and valve grind . I really thought you were going to get it to fire ?
good work
When I know an old engine is turning and bad rings are most likely worn I will pour about a 1/4 cup of oil down the carb and then crank most will be on the runners but as the engine rpm goes up it will be sucked in help with sealing the combustion chamber pour to much and hydro lock I have also pulled plugs and poured oil into cyli ders turn it over to push out the excess the re install plugs and give a crank.
Hemi could of been built if you stopped cranking the 318🤣
Up North we call that stuff "Schmeng" or "Schmegma".
Lolz 😂...welcome to being a celebrity guys....🎉
If the water got up that high, then there’s going to be more discovery to come.
Like my dear old Dad used to say: "If you can't say anything nice--don't say anything at all..." Who could be mean to these two loveable guys?😉
Geez what a mess... You should set the block out in Dr Art's front yard, get some flower seeds and plant them in all of that dirt
that's in the block. It won't run, but it should make a really good planter...
I'm willing to bet that one could disassemble that engine and keep the parts marked to go back where they were and just clean that thing up and reassemble it and it would run. Of course it makes no sense to do that when one gets the engine all disassembled and not at least do what was referred to in the old days as an overhaul. Back in the fifties when an engine got to so many miles (and we are only talking to around fifty or sixty thousand) one could in frame an engine (you could do that on these older vehicles, coming into the sixties and beyond that became very difficult). Of course, there was generally a valve job done and ringing the pistons and replacing the bearings (use of a ridge reamer was paramount as that lip on the cylinder bores could break ring lands on the pistons upon removal and of course break after installation and run in). One could do that and give the engine a good tune-up (generally a major tune-up) and proceed to drive the vehicle many more miles. My dad did that a quite a few vehicles both for our family and other people as well. Of course if the engine was worn out he would go ahead and do a rebuild getting the proper machine work done and proper parts. This was in a time when getting one hundred thousand miles out of an engine was a really big deal.
From the start you said that you were just for fun trying to get it running and that it probly would not run so why was every one so annoyed with the results of the video?
I didn't comment on the cranking video, so don't shoot the messenger, but that was a bad video on a technical basis and it ended in disappointment, that's gonna get angry comments on CZcams.
My God that is bad🫢
It ran, sort of, nobody can say it didn't, though that's all she wrote. But with all the gunk inside, it's impressive UT even got it this far, considering everything else he had to deal with.
🤘😁 I'm just about to film kiwis mustang At the beach hop here in New Zealand shortly its thursday here so it's his birthday today lol thanks for the heads up. 😁🇬🇸👍
so, if the flood waters got high enough to get inside the engine, I wonder how the trans and rear axle look inside. Maybe the frame rails and floorboards are carrying "flood evidence", too, like the 66 Charger. As for a lack of rust, oil displaces water, so I can understand that. Usually there's even a line where the two meet inside a metal container
I lost my ID in a flood.
I lost my wife too but her name wasn’t ID
@@waynepaul9276 can you get me a bottle of hard stuff?
Look, creep. You want a knuckle sandwich?
@@waynepaul9276 Say , could you get me a bottle of some hard stuff.
Feo Y Loco,,,, LOL Much respect to Tio Tony and the good Doctor
Good reason for it not wanting to run!! Eeya what a mess! Oui vay ishmere!
Well, what you SHOULD of done was obvious to me. TURNED OFF THE COMMENTS! notice I didn't comment. I've learned there's a lot of armchair mechanics out there. Almost as bad as telephone tough guys. I'm not hating on any fellow viewers. But I know as a fact, hindsight is always 20/20. And I learned long ago not to put my own personal stuff on here due to all the critics that drive their prius to work for someone else 6 days a week. I like you channel's a lot. It takes balls to do it. And to not wear your feelings on your sleeves. I'm sure I'll get hate for this. But again, zero bucks. Take care fellas! Good job and please keep the content coming!
"YOU GUYS ARE WATCHING THE WRONG CHANNEL....!!!!"
Never a truer statement made by Tony!!!
Will I enjoyed it, and I didn't even get to watch. But I did feel very bad for that.Poor starter, that sucker was tough. Anyhow I tend to like all the behind the scenes stuff that others might feel as dry. Detail is cool. Maybe more at some point?
so it was not gremlins lining up the ring end gaps?🤷♂️
O, Sweet Jeeezus..
