  • SUBARU ENGINE GUIDE! In this video we go over the different types of Subaru engines as well as the characteristics to tell which one is which.
Which Subaru engine do I have? We know this seems like a silly question but a lot of engines are mislabeled and people sometimes purchase the incorrect engine for their project. We thought we would create a guide to distinguish which engines are which. Please note this is for EJ20 and EJ25 Turbo motors.
Check out our blog post for more details and the full engine guide - www.iwireservices.com/post/wh...

You either have the Subaru engine that either leaks oil, consumes oil, got starved for oil and/or blew the head gaskets .

Gaskets have improved, but far from perfect, and Ally has a greater thermal expansion ratio than the finest steels. That won't change.

Question I have a full 09 wrx hatch and a full 00 obs wagon had them both for a couple years and have been poking around at swapping the wrx engine into my Impreza but Im a lil puzzled lol. Will my body harness and ecu be a direct plug and play? I’ve been doing a bit of researching to see if anyone’s really done this swap and I found a couple forms but they all stop posting updates, I know that the ej255 is a CAN BUS and that my ej22 isn’t so it’ll be a “harder” swap than usual, I also read on your website that it would possibly need a stand alone ecu for the vehicle to properly run and have everything on my dash work accordingly but if I swap the entire car over will I be fine? I would love to hear that there is a way (hopefully an easy way) to get this swap done and if there is anything I should be looking into. Thank you

Great video! I hope that you can help answer our question. We just had the engine replaced on our 2003 Forester 2.5xs. after the previous one failed. The mechanic said he had a "donor engine" from a car that had rolled over. Since the swap was made, the motor seems to have less power and shifts more often when going uphill. We did some research and wanted to make sure that an engine with the same power was installed. The previous engine, from the VIN plate, was EJ25 IBXUAB, the swap has EJ25 on one side and C218957 on the other side. Could you share your opinion on the similarity of the swap or at least confirm that the donor engine wasn't an older or inferior swap, thanks!

I am new to subaru and long story short. My wife's dream car was 2006 subaru legacy wagon. We found one basically 1 owner and 113k miles. Test drive and look over was amazing and carfax was clean. Well...... 200 miles later went to do oil change headgasket was bad. $1700 in parts and labor later went ahead and did wp and timing at same time. We received car back from trusted mechanic. We drove it back and forth on family vacation ran amazing. It has been about 1400 miles since that and spun a rod bearing. My question is what years and model can I look for to be a direct swap? It is expensive to look at just the 06 to 07 and try and fine a reliable used engine. Trying not to wipe out savings completely out but my wife misses her baby. Any thoughts to help me.

Hello friends, greetings from Zacatecas Mexico! I have a subaru legacy gt 2.5 2005 (ej25) but I broke the engine, right now I am doing an engine change for a wrx sti 2004 (ej20), I made the mistake of buying it since my subaru originally came with 2 position sensors 3 wire camshaft and this engine we are finding a 2 wire camshaft sensor! Can this problem be solved by putting your computer and the wiring of the wrx sti? Is the bsm or computer compatible with the rest of the subaru legacy equipment? First of all, Thanks

Thanks for your comment. We do not know of a solution due to the camshaft sensor difference. More about this can be found below.

A ECU swap is going to cause more problems than solve since you have a Legacy GT that is CANbus equipped.

How would I be able to tell if the engine came off of a wrx or a sti

For US it would have different camshafts and you could use the chart. For JDM Red manifold for STI and Silver manifold for WRX

Unless you swap out the ECM and harness.

Is there a big difference from a 02 -05 ej253 sohc non turbo and 07 ej253 sohc non turbo? Its for a 07 forester, just wondering if the 02-05 will work on it

if the throttle body type, AVCS type, Camshaft sensor type, ignition type, and manifold type are all the same for both engines, then the long blocks would be compatible.

You should still be able to tell generally if it would work with your application based on the AVCS and cam position sensor type.

Those are twin turbo models so fairly easy to spot. We do not recommend them for few reasons you can find here iwireusa.com/blogs/iwire-university/twin-turbo-engine-subaru-swap?_pos=1&_sid=6b73f24ac&_ss=r
