  • This episode was interesting, the Slugroach took over the city and ate everyone, a few were able to escape thanks to Ruby and the Doctor....but at what cost.
It seems like history will repeat itself with them going to "explore" and claim the planet for themselves like their ancestors did....
Should have we let the Slugroach cook?

When you do a rewatch you notice the racism sprinkled throughout. She immediately rejects the Doctor, but listens to Ruby. She talks about how the Doctor "looks stupid" and "will be disciplined." I don't know how much you know about the history of the show, so trying to not spoil anything, but the extra layer that Ncuti has to play here, is that the character has only recently become a black man so really this is the first time encountering this type of racism directed at him. Also, the Doctor has always been really successful in trying to save people, so the fact that they refused to be saved, and he's realizing it's because of his skin color is something new to him, so I think that anger and frustration coming out of him is likely tying that in too. All in all, I'm one of the few who didn't really enjoy this episode, I didn't resonate with Lindy Pepper-Bean at all and found her too annoying from the start. And if you read to the end, here's the alien emoji! LOL 👽

Yes thats thr first thing i noticed when i was editing. All the little digs at him from the start. I should do a little editors note at the end haha and yes everything you said about the doctor experiencing being black for the first time i also tought of that lager on and how hard it must be to suddenly have that happen after centuries (not sure how old he is 😅)
I guess for me they drew me in with the insane technology of always having your friend group around your head. I do t know how they do it 😆

I always watch to the end 😀
73 yards & Dot and Bubble are 2 very good stories especially as they're "doctor lite" stories (can happen for logistical production reasons - in this case Ncuti was still needed to finish Sex Education - iirc 73 yards was the first episode they shot, even before Church on Ruby Road.
It's interesting - some people see that D & B is about racism and some don't (it can be read as commentary about how social media us making media Gen Z insular & entitled) but if you you watch it again knowing the ending you'll see clues all the way along - eg lindy blocking the doctors friend request but not Ruby's - so the ending isn't quite as rushed as you might think.
Apparently this is an idea RTD had discussed with Steven Moffatt way back in the 2000's but was too expensive to do all the digital work at that time.
Hope that pointer i posted in the 73 yards comments didn't spoil you, wonder if it's making sense yet😀
Tge doctor is always going to try to save people so the ending is his angst at not being able to save them (they are totally incapable of fending for themselves outside of finetime even though the inherent misplace sense of superiority means they can't see that) because of something as stupid and invalid as racism.
Doctor who started with a mandate to be educational so it will tackle subjects like this - here i think it's subtlety done so that that part of the audience in denial won't notice it - i think RTD has been surprised by how some people see it and some miss it.
I think (although i don't know definitively if Charlie Brooker is a fan) that it's more likely given how influencial Who has been over decades (Neil Gaiman is a fan, Peter Jackson is a fan, and indeed a certain Marvel Avenger says she keeps getting work from hollywood directors because they're fans after she appeared in the show), iirc i read somewhere even Harry Potter would not exist without the influence of Who😀!
    Great reaction as always.

Ohhh i like that this idea was brought up so long ago and they waited until they could make it.
And yeah i saw the preview for episode 7 when i recorded episode 6...its a bit of a spoiler but im not too mad. Shes basically in every epiosdes. I cant wait to watch epiaode 7 to figure out why 😁
And thank you for wstching until the end, i really tought no one was. I might spend a little more time on the editing and add some clips at the end to go with my toughts.

These past two episodes had to be Doctor light, because Ncuti Gatwa had to finish filming Sex Education during filming. This final scene from Dot and Bubble was the first scene Ncuti Gatwa filmed for the show.

I noticed other reaction channels having similar thoughts about racism being brought up - the anger due to real life experiences can completely snap people out of enjoying the episode so much that they can no longer pay any attention to what's going on. I am not sure all-white producer team understands this... That said, it has been done the best for the first time in doctor who. No moralizing speeches, just events unfolding.

Thats exactly it. It took me out of it. I didnt expect racism to even be brought up for sone reason, it took me off guard.
