  • Doctor Who review of season 1 episode 8 finale as Ncuti Gatwa ends season 1 with Millie Gibson on Disney+. This season of Doctor Who was in partnership with the BBC and Disney, but while the budgets improved, the story seems to have entered a different dimension. Brining back Sutekh for the Doctor Who finale from Classic Doctor Who was menat to get fans back, but was the story wrapped up in a satisfying way? Did Ruby's mum save the world? Is Doctor Who worth watching?

Doctor Who review of Season 1 episode 8 the season finale. The BBC and Disney partnered to build up to this episode to save Disney+, and failed. With lots of plot threads left specially for this episode, you at least expected AN ANSWER. No, nothing, not a single care in order to make the story satisfying for the audience. This episode reaked to me of you've already sat through the messaging I wanted to send you, and so now why should I care at the end. This episode gets worse at it goes along just because you realise where the story is going. All the plotlines, every episode, none of it meant anything. It was just bad writing. I wasn't even a fan of the previous episodes, but somehow still managed to be disappointed by the story. This episode, is indefensible. But what did you think of what you saw? Let me know your thoughts down below, and as always, thanks for watching :)

I think that is 100% the case. Every preceding doctor (except the last two), had something definable (or indefinable) about their character where their opponent would either make a misstep, change their operations based on the Doctor's involvement, or flat out fail, or get kicked off the planet. I haven't seen that happen with this guy. In fact, if he was to apply for a job, the skill level would be above his ability, and only morons would hire him. But, you know, he does check all the boxes, and that's all I have to say about this decade.

He left her behind because she fell in love with a man, and The Doctor knew that she wouldn't be able to bring herself to leave him in order to be with the man she loved. The Doctor left her behind so she could live a happy life with him, and probably also to help humanity rebuild, after the Dalek occupation of Earth was thwarted. it probably hurt him way more than her to do that, but he knew it was what was best for Susan. Also, he promised that one day he would come back and see her. Reminds me of The Doctor Dances, talking to the doctor in the hospital “When this war (WWII) began, I was a father and a grandfather. Now, I am neither, but I am still a doctor.” At the time, I didn’t know any Classic Who, so I didn’t know about Susan, but the power of that scene was that you KNEW the 9th Doctor was connecting with him on a visceral level and therefore he must have lost both children and grandchildren in the Time War (I’m honestly still unclear if Susan lived out her life(s) with her husband on Earth or if she joined Gallifrey in the Time War).
Mind you, it reminds me because the writing used to be GOOD and it used to complement what came before, and now it’s just… whatever the hell this is.
Before, you felt that the Doctor was running away from past mistakes because, like all creatures in this fallen universe, he is fallible, but as a “higher being” his mistakes have vastly greater consequences. Now, you feel like the writers are bashing the character for perceived character flaws before *they* - perfect beings that they are - controlled him. It’s enough to make me yack up my oatmeal.

I'm not very familiar with the Big Finish audiobooks, or other spin off stuff, but I always took that scene to mean that she had been killed as a result of the Time War. She may not have wanted to join up with Gallifrey, but I could easily see a scenario where the Daleks found out that The Doctor's granddaughter was on Earth, and sent a force out to exterminate her, as a way to hurt The Doctor. Maybe that was part of what pushed him to join in the war in the first place.

When I first theorised Sutekh returning (yes it was that easy to guess!), I thought 'great, finally a chance for this series to do well' but the truth of the matter is that they BUTCHERED him! That final episode basically destroyed EVERYTHING left of the Dr Who canon by somehow suggesting Sutekh was MAGICALLY on top of the TARDIS _the entire_ time - yes even when the Daleks and other big threats and unique stuff happening, Sutekh didnt pop out to finally kill the Doctor or aid the baddies. SO DUMB! And Susan Twist is nobody! And Ruby is just a 'normal' girl? But then how does she see the snowing thing? Why would Sutekh be interested in her and not Clara Oswald for example?

    • @juan0808
      @juan0808 Před 4 dny +15

Honestly, the answer is easy. Like so many other franchises the writers want to use magic as the answer. They don't want to put effort in being consistent or logical, so they just make stuff up. Any inconsistencies can be waved away as "because magic. Why Stekh didn't acted before, because magic. Why Susan have snow powers, because magic.

@@juan0808 That is the worst thing about incompetent/lazy people writing fantasy or scifi. They think that, because the rules aren't the same as reality, there are no rules. But it doesn't work that way. In order for a scifi or fantasy story to be good, there have to be rules. The difference is that you write the rules and then you have to stick to them. In this case, there were rules already in place and RTD decided to break those rules, thinking that it didn't matter, but for a Doctor Who story to be good, it can't break the rules in the past. The only real exception I can think of off the top of my head is the sonic screwdriver which became a bit overpowered. However, even there, there is one rule. It doesn't work on wood. That stays consistent for whatever reason.

Personally I would've had the Trickster be the shadowy figure that dropped Ruby off at the church. The trickster lives in a plane the tardis never visited, so the trickster is safe and because he's the parent of Ruby. The dust would never killed her, and the reason why that moment is so important and keeps changing is because that's what the trickster does. They set up that moment to be a choice that the doctor would have to make. The doctors choice with ruby , and the reason why the Trickster did this in the first place. Is because when Sutekh brought death to existence, then there was no more chaos.

    - Snow and music?

    - Why was the mom “beyond a glitch and shadowed”
    - Why did the memory of the doctor regarding the mom change?
    - The time window required the power of Europe to power up and was broken, it turned on magically when ruby walked in and then stayed on throughout the whole episode?!?!!
    - Why was the time window answering the questions?
    General plot holes:
    - why did the doctor need to get a spoon when the planets were left intact in 2046 there was load of metal just no people?
    - so the doctors entire plan was based on the tardis not being moved/rotated?
    - if the doctor,Mel and Ruby were the last people alive in the universe why did sutekh care about the mom if she was already dead?
    - if a new Susan is created 73 yards away from tardis when the doctor lands somewhere then how can the mom of a character be a Susan?!?!
    - how does death to death bring life? Doesn’t really make much sense.
    - why was that random woman alive? Why did the doctor land there?

The reveal of Ruby's mother confirms what I've suspected all along - RTD has only returned to Doctor Who to troll the fans. I don't know if he's been taking flack over the years, but he's clearly bitter to the point of using the show he supposedly loves to get back at the fans. Even putting aside all the identity politics which is typical BBC/Disney (although Moffat's episode seemed able to avoid it), we have:
    1. You felt Ruby's mother was special? Ah! You're seeing patterns that aren't there! Typical fanboy!
    2. You expect the Doctor to be asexual? Ah! Forget it! He's actually a predator!
    3. You want explanations for 73 Yards, Ruby's snow and how Sutekh could hide in the TARDIS even when it's been blown up? Hahaha!
    4. Did I saying this would be the biggest and best finale ever? Ah! I meant to say I'm going to destroy a classic character by making it look like a CGI dog and kill it by dragging it on it's lead, and then have 15 minutes of Eastenders, which is the show I REALLY love!
    5. You didn't notice there weren't any black characters in Dot and Bubble? Ah! You're racist!! Hahahaha!
    6. You want sci-fi in your sci-fi show? Ah! How about musical numbers, dance routines and Bridgerton! Hahaha!
    7. You thought the best episodes of my previous run where written by other writers? Ah! Well I'm writing them all now! (except for allowing my mate Moffat to write a couple - oh, and to force those Marvel writers who didn't make their show gay enough to make amends as a sort of grovelling apology to me personally!). Hahaha!
    8. You want scary monsters? Hahahaha! Grow up - have a literal boogeyman you bunch of space babies! Lol!
    9. Did you say Davros was one of the few classic villains that Nu Who has done justice to? Ha! Hold my beer!
    10. You want to know who the Anita Dobson character is? Ah! I'm going to make you wait at least a full year, and then it still won't make any sense that she's lived next to Ruby all this time! HAHAHAHAHA!

Admittedly, this has been a problem with Doctor Who for a long time, and is especially pronounced for Nu Who. I remember Eccleston accidentally unleashing a gateway that flooded Earth with a battalion of Daleks because he thought it was a signal from Gallifrey, but later in the same 45 minute episode managed to pull some sonic screwdriver shenanigans to suck every Dalek back in the gateway with minimal human casualties. There's no point in most Nu Who storylines to care about major events and setpieces because they are just... ludicrous and no matter how high the stakes were, they were overcome with ridiculous ease and with little cost.
Compared to some of the major events from classic Doctor Who. The Hartnell era 12 episode epic "The Dalek Master Plan" (13 if you count "Mission to the Unknown", although 2 episodes basically don't relate to anything because of the Christmas lead up and 2 involve a rematch with the Meddling Monk) is one of the biggest examples of where the stakes are high and, although the Doctor triumphs, the price of victory is not cheap. The War Games (Patrick Troughton's finale) is also interesting because it's another example of the Doctor facing a renegade Time Lord, except the renegade has aligned himself with Steve Jobs and ultimately the Doctor realises that Time Lord intervention is required, knowing full well that the Time Lords view him as a renegade.

      @Toliman. Před 4 dny +4

Well, he did change a CRT TV from the 90s into a Tablet with the Sonic Screwdriver. Somehow. Just Consume Product, don't ask questions.
The incredible part is that TV's were box shaped for a reason, i.e. they needed a cone-shaped screen to work.
The artifice was making the Cone-Shape look less odd. If you look at the 2005 iMac 'teardrop' shape, that's functionally why. Putting an iPod inside a shoe is possible, but you'd have to functionally assert a reason for it.
When they changed from CRT to LCD, suddenly you could get flat-screen devices.
The Cathode ray relies on a cone-shaped projection to shoot electrons at a screen/material layer, using a controlled magnetic coil to fire in scanned lines. How this works when you flatten the process is infinitely odd, because it still needs a reflector or coil to aim the beam(s).
It's a vastly different kind of technology to the LCD or matrix screen, which has a field of crystals that change state based on voltage.
I sort of get what they're trying to achieve, but it's a bizarre method to attach a Tablet to a computer when you could just have WiFi and make it work. 2046 and 2026, most tech should work. Just like 2006 and 2026. You can't really guarantee an iPhone 6 will work, unless they make 5/6/7G backward compatible, or they make concessions for older devices. IDK.

Just look at any promo poster or cover of Dr Who since Harry Potter, think about John Hurt's War Doctor giving shit to the knob-end doctors brandishing it like it's a weapon ("It's a screwdriver, what are you going to do? Assemble a cabinet at them???"). Ffs.
Patrick Troughton, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and even Paul McGann use the sonic SPARINGLY. The only other Doctor that used it quite often was Jon Pertwee and even then it wasn't EVERY EPISODE.

Have to say with Matt Smiths first season.
Lots of stuff didn't make technical sense. I mean Rory dying... and then he was a mechanical centurian somehow... And then the Doctor Rebooted the entire universe... Somehow... and Rory is back to life and a normal human... Somehow... And Amy and Rory now remembers a timeline that no longer exists cause it was rebooted... Somehow.
This all technically doesn't make sense.
BUT! The attachment to the characters was GREAT! The emotional impact, the emotional satisfaction was absolutely one hundred percent there.
And you can get away with this, if you have the emotional satisfaction. Which Matt Smith season 1 DID.
      And this obviously did not...
I cared about Amy, I cared about Rory, I cared about the Doctor. I was attached to the Doctors' willpower, and how he had to stand up to fix this not showing any fear or doubt.
To Rory's loyalty that never faltered and I got to see it.
To Amy's perseverance that she would not give up.
We SAW them all being exceptional and acting it, so I could be impressed by them, feel attached, and be happy when they got a happy ending! They EARNED it and my emotional satisfaction!
