#TheBeachBoys #SMiLESessions - Hudba
I can only imagine what the beach boys would have been like if brian had been encouraged to finish this record and "grow musically"
There's a boatload of what ifs in this existence. Like, what if Buddy Holly, at age 22, hadn't been killed in that plane wreck?
The album probably would’ve taken Sgt Peppers place as the greatest album of all time (it was definitely more experimental than Sgt Pepper) but Brian would probably still be addicted to drugs. I feel that it order for his life to get cleaned up, he had to go through the hell that he did in the 70s and unfortunately the 80s. You have to hit your lowest point before you can get better. And now he is better. He still has mental health issues, but he’s still out on the road performing the music that he loves. Had he finished smile in 1967, he’d probably be long dead before Dennis because Brian wasn’t just smoking marijuana. He didn’t many other drugs besides that
@@goldwaterproductions Mostly, at that point, weed and LSD, maybe amphetamines, not too harmful. He didn't start doing coke until the mid-70s.
Mike Love hate is for basic bitches
Very random, but gotta give you respect for the Thundercat pfp.
One person who CAN'T be blamed in anyway for stifling Smile, is Bruce Johnston. He is basically the one member who not only believed in Brian's vision, but genuinely enjoyed the music from its earliest conception, and saw it for what it was. He traveled to England to promote Pet Sounds himself after Capitol Records pulled their stunt. Unfortunately, being the "New" guy who was brought in mainly as a semi-replacement, he basically had no veto power in the group.
I can probably attribute it to Bruce being an outsider at the time (he had at least a few months with the band before Pet Sounds came around). Whereas the others were used to their previous music, Bruce was still finding his mark after leaving his previous band.
TooCooFoYou I think Bruce was also more open to what was going on around them. He obviously thought what Brian was doing was really good and wanted it do well.
It kinda makes me sad that he tours with Mike instead of Brian and Al but I guess when they started it was steady income, and since he never apposed Brian’s music I can’t blame him for that.
He also gave Disney Girls.
@@brysonfuller7719 Bruce is touring because he needs to pay for his medical bills, which is just awful to think about
Guy Pseudonym he is? What’s wrong with him?
It's shameless to see Mike change his tune with a straight face when he was likely the biggest factor in tearing down Brian's self-esteem and confidence in finishing what was obviously a vivid work of dream-like musical genius. Ahead of its time or not, I wish he was 10% as visionary as Brian in recognizing he was onto something very special.
Either way I've been ecstatic listening to these songs, even unfinished it's a masterpiece in every which way I'll appreciate forever. Thank you Brian!
Oh I'm sure he changed his tune overnight the moment he saw how well Sgt Pepper was doing, but by then it was too late for Brian. He felt capitulated, confidence deflated.
If Mike had his way, the Beach Boys would still be singing about surfing and cars to this day, oh wait, they are, lol.
@@lamarravery4094 They did more-or-less abandon that to make more experimental music for the late 60s and throughout the 70s though.
After Pet Sounds & Good Vibrations Brian should have been universally acknowledged as a musical genius and encouraged & supported to complete his vision. (He said he needed a year just to mix Smile)
But due to all of the resistance, he lost his confidence and got derailed for years but we are all thankful that he didn't give up! Thanks Brian!
Mike Love is absolutely the worst.
I'm just so glad this was finally released before my dad passed in 2016. He spent the previous 40 plus years wondering if he'd ever hear it. I wasn't even born until 1979, and from hearing about it forever from him, I was excited too, and it didn't disappoint. I'd never seen him that excited to listen to a new album.
That is awesome
2:49 gave me goosebumps when Brian started singing Heroes and Villains and then it switched over to his younger self. Man that voice when he was young was absolutely unbelievable.
its amazing that when this album was released it made the top 500 rolling stones albums ever. imagine how legendary it would have been if Brian assembled it the way that he wanted to and it came out in 67. Thanks for fucking it up mike love.
I wouldn’t go that far. Brian had the support of the group, he just had a mental breakdown
Uhh, everything always Mike Love when none of you were there and nor any clue what was going through Brian's head or why.
@@vincevirtua if Brian had his friends by his side then it would've given him the strength to finish Smile as intended. But Mike went out of his way to kill Brian's dreams and ambitions. Mike Love was and is the only source of abuse to Brian that he never managed to defeat.
@@joephillips2049 it's documented by Van Dyke Parks and some other close associates of Brian's at the time that Mike didn't like the album and he wanted more music like the old "formula". Dennis and Bruce were the only ones who had nothing bad to say about it. The rest had issues of some sort with it, mainly that they will be alienating their surf fanbase after the "disappointment" of Pet Sounds commercially. VDP left the project due to Mike, after that it all started to unravel. It's no secret, his distaste for SMiLE.
I wouldn't give Mike that much credit, I really don't think Brian gave a darn about Mike's opinions at the time. He wanted to go beyond musically and Mike wanted to be stuck perpetually in the early 60s.
Brian Wilson is such a gift to music. Stunning genius.
I'm going to invent a time machine. Just so I can go back in time and tell Brian to stick with it. Even if he had to release it himself. This would've been the best album in the history of the world. It's so sad he never finished it.
Mozart goes surfing...
Brian Wilson's magnum opera: Pet Sounds and its successor Smile Sessions (Box Set) are unsurpassed in their compositions, lyrical, instrumentation, orchestral arrangements, vocal and production in Chamber Rock. Smile (3971) and other unofficial stereo versions mixed in w/ the official one allows you to appreciate it better, as well as Pet Sounds Sessions (40th Ann Collection) and sporadic 1968-76 material.
The highest pinnacle of Brian Wilson's genius is on this record. Look on and listen to these works ye Mighty and weep
Those of us who went on to love groups like The Moody Blues, Yes, ELP, and Genesis...we were robbed of this masterpiece when it was recorded. Brian was so far ahead of the curve and I'm grateful that it's now been released.
you are right. I've never made the connection. Brian is the father of prog rock!!!! OMG
Just because you like prog and you like Brian Wilson, doesn't mean Brian's work has anything to do with prog...
@@danackroydsbutt Lol they really do, just listen to the music. The father of prog music, Robert Fripp, was hugely inspired by Sgt. Pepper and we all know that Smile would have been a better album. So just imagine if we had a King Crimson inspired by Smile instead of Pepper.
"Pet Sounds" & "Smile Sessions" are brilliant albums. True genius!
Surf's Up-- SHUT up-- nothing better was ever composed... gives me chills every time I hear it.
The "Holy Grail" of Rock has been issued, thank God! For us who'd stuck around all these years, this is great news! Never thought this would ever happen,so THANK YOU Brian,Mike,Al,and Bruce! From a Long-Time Beach Boys fan,I send my congrats to you! Multi-Platnium and Grammy Winner? WHY NOT!? It deserves it!
JAW DROPPING watching the Beach Boys recording Good Vibrations vocals...
I remember how blown away I was when I first heard Brian Wilson's 2004 version of "Smile." No words can describe what it's like hearing "Smile" with the original Beach Boys vocals!
Brian Wilson made Mike Love a very rich man and not just financially.
For the people criticizing Mike Love's scepticism during the making of 'Smile':
In 1966-1967, ambitious Wilson created a problem by turning The Beach Boys into a studio band like The Beatles had become. No matter how great 'Smile' would have been, it couldn't be reproduced onstage by The Beach Boys at that time. 'Pet Sounds' has less complicated songs, which could be stripped for live performances.
Also, Wilson turned The Beach Boys into a solo project, recording with The Wrecking Crew. The other band members became session musicians, who only had to sing lyrics which Wilson wanted them to sing. Hazy lyrics, far away from the band's usual clear style (which already was changing at the time of 'Pet Sounds').
Obviously, such a "solo project" is going to raise some tension in a band. To make another comparison with The Beatles, just look at their tensions when McCartney more or less became the artistic leader. It resulted in great songs, big hits, but also huge tensions which became part of The Beatles's break-up.
'Smile' was a very huge risk. And if 'Smiley Smile' (which isn't really so far away from 'Smile') is an indicator, it may have been not much of a financial succes at that time. The Beatles's album 'Sgt. Pepper' is often compared with 'Smile', but 'Sgt. Pepper' has less complicated songs than 'Smile'.
So, I'm not surprised that Love had criticism in 1966-1967. Even more because of drugs getting involved. Was Wilson really creating a huge succes or was he losing himself in a hazy project which didn't even had a track listing?
When Wilson finished 'Smile' in 2004, he had the help of computers which could let him easily browse through the recordings. This wasn't possible with tapes, which were huge and cumbersome. Only then, the final tracklisting was created.
You make some valid points.
You are a god among men for not blindly hating mike love.
The original SMiLE would've likely been a hit. A lot of people were hyped. Having it watered down and released as Smiley Smile (plus their decision to skip the Monterey Pop Festival) ultimately doomed them for a while.
Very valid points sir. Anytime I read about Love's skepticism of the concept/lyrics, I really can't help but relate to the guy, at least on some level.
I dont hate Mike but i feel a sort of resentment for not being as supportive of this journey Brian was working towards. It would have been really interesting to see how the music scene at that time wouldve perhaps changed if Smile were to be released.
Mike didnt like that their music was doing something different, pretty simple. Ultimately it led to some of the best albums ever made, an essential piece to creating indie rock. A song like Vega-Tables back then may have been a pop oddity, but now in 2012 it would be an indie pop stroke of brilliance. Too bad they couldnt see it back then, & went forward with the direction established with this magnificent album. Luckily we have talented musicians today like Sufjan Stevens to carry that torch.
Glad you think so Mike.
Only criticism of Smile for me is that they released it in mono.......The Beach Boys are best appreciated in stereo in my book. I will always love their music!
The way I see it is that since Brian was deaf in one ear, mono is closer to his vision. I can see where you're coming from though.
@@FucklesTheEnchilada if both Brian's ears were working I can only imagine the kind of weird experiments he'd pull with stereo sound!
I understand the hate towards Mike, but I'm glad he is/was part of the Beach Boys. His bass vocals are amazing.
God, if Mike would've shut his mouth Brian would've possibly had a little boost of confidence, and SMiLE could've toppled Sgt. Pepper, changing the history of rock. Same with Pete Townshend and Lifehouse, if he could've handled the album in proportional circumstances, although the concept could've been too complex for the public to take in.
I think sacrificing Lifehouse was necessary if it meant getting Who's Next.
I NEED THIS ALBUM!! I'm crying and been waiting for this moment in history!!
I am so excited for this!
its such a brilliant album,i bought it when it came out and delighted with my purchase
love listening to it.
I'm with you guys I have been waiting a long time for this...Watching the boys in the studio with Good Vibrations give me goosebumps!!!!
Mike unfortunately did a few things that weren't correct. But he's still human, and he didn't destroy anyone. He tried saving the band so they wouldn't go crashing down. Brian chose to do drugs and it got him into a bad place. But he eventually got out of it. I honestly dislike Mike Love, but all in all he's not completely a bad person.
agreed, six years later still true. hes ok like the rest of us. :)
This is such great footage
Amazing. Brian, you are a beautiful genius, never forget that. If only Mike Love weren't in the equation, who knows how much more awesome (if possible) this could have been.
4:25 perfectly shows Brian’s change in Harmics with the groups vocals from Surf music to a more complex listening 👌
For once, I agree with Mike Love! Wonderful was my favorite vocal of all as well.
Brian, please let me love you.
@crietman29 Beatles had John Paul And George writing and George Martin producing. Brian was the total package.
great, magic, wonderful, thank you soooo much!
I agree; Brian made music for all time, whether he realized it at the time or not. I love Pet Sounds and Smile (have both albums!) Brian and Mike did have different philosophies, of course. For Brian, it was always all about the music, he didn't care about the business aspect of the band. In fifty years, who knows--you may very well be right--it could outsell everything else they did. But I don't see their earlier stuff going away, either.
it is life changing. I've ordered two copies already.
The Smile album with the Beach Boys name on it FINALLY!!! being released after 44 years. All I can say about that is WOW!!!! I mean Brian finishing the album with his band and going on tour performing that music live was huge. But this is even bigger!!!
Brian Wilson is a musical genius. Pet Sounds & SMiLE are masterpieces.
One of rock's Greatest albums that was "supposed to be" in 1967 but we had to wait til like 2011 and brian still isn't sure that one is exactly right ,..
It is life changing
My pal artist/musician Hans Weigand( not a man of animus or enemies) knew Mike Love in his Mahareeyshiyt day and he gets violently ill at the memory.
Interesting stuff. Brian was on Radio 4's front row this week and said Mike 'detested' Smile. Interesting to hear his view on it these days.
@sjdrifter72 Sgt Pepper didn't change music history. All of the Beatles songwriting talent together doesn't equal 1/2 of Brian's genius. They always needed George Martin --- Brian was a one -man show. He had the voice, the vision, the musicianship, the songwriting talent, the balls to pull off a record that makes the Beatles most ambitious work seem positively ordinary by comparison. And I'm speaking as someone who was convinced Beatles were supreme ---- until I discovered Brian...
At 1:47 I almost thought he said "I know their gonna like it. This is gonna be a great Beach Boy album.. and sure enough when they got back to town, they blew my mind with their bullshit". LoL which is probably closer to the truth.
sooooo....let the other beach boys explain why they didn't want this album to come out in the 60's. its a shame. they thought it was "too weird". LONG LIVE BRIAN WILSON.
So much better than Sgt Peppers, hell it's better than almost everything the Beatles did, I'd say Abbey Road or Magical Mystery Tour come close to how brilliant SMiLE is.
Very true
This album is AWESOME!!!!!!
I can't relay through text how I feel about this album releasing. I honestly haven't been more excited for an album...ever?
Yeah. Ever.
"Charlie...Charlie?...could you sit this one out, please. Thanks, don't get mad."
can't fuckinggg wait for this Tuesday !!!!
Topping Sgt. Pepper could be an achievement if it actually succeeded in topping Pet Sounds in the first place...
The only thing SMiLE had to top was Pet Sounds.
Now let's see if it really comes out next Tuesday. I'm stoked big time, but I'm not going to bet the farm on it.
Rock On, Brian!
@HughHoyland1 : Anything that strayed from the "formula" Mike carped about it. He was jealous because he wasn't writing the lyrics on Smile. In My Room wasn't penned by Mikey, either. Brian wanted the lyrics to progress past the beach, hot dogs, caramel corn and cotton candy. Baby's need formula. Brian wanted to get into the meat and potatoes. Mikey's lyrics just couldn't cut it.
It's lovely how they're all into it.
:-)
@pmoyer50 From what I have read, Carl was skeptical, but wanted to please Brian, but when Mike balked, he always followed Mike because it was easier than listening to him complain. Al always liked what Brian did because he knew it would be great in the end.
@TheOneartist I don't know how you can say that.
The Beach Boys, as well as the Beatles, the Hollies, and the Zombies or any other band that may come up in this conversation were pop bands. They may have employed techniques that were popular in the other genre, but I would never call them psychedelic.
Pop isn't a bad term, but to say Animal Collective is honoring the Beach Boys and keeping that kind of music alive is a slap in the face to four decades of pop musicians.
I think it's out of print. Ebay lists the 2Lp edition for over $200, the 5CD sessions box goes for as much as $1,000, and the 2 CD set is listed as "rare". Wny would such an album just not be printed anymore, in just a bit over 10 years?
There are the making of the songs from Pet Sounds (from the Pet Sounds Box) and of course: The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations - Rare Studio Recording Film Footage
About ten years ago Brian was asked about Smile, he said the masters were destroyed. I imagine he lied because it was just too painful to think of them.
I always look up songs that have beautiful back up singing. Out of 10 song i looked up to see who performed on the song..3 of them were carl wilson. He's the only one that could have made it without his brother's help.
it could have been the most stunning revelation in pop music history had it been finished in my opinion. I believe that it could have actually changed the evolution in pop music making pop progress in stranger other ways.
I love this I am going to buy that CD .
"A time capsule coming back to earth" - great description by Bruce Johnston; however, I seem to recall it was he, Love & Jardine (correct me if not) who pulled the group apart and even sued Brian?
Check out Mike Love's EPIC speech at the 'rock & roll hall of fame'

i hope this will be rereleased soon in full stereo (as full as possible) sometime in the near future. and without the session work even though it is a good bonus.
anybody know where all that archival footage of them recording in the studio is from, or where one can see more of it (another doc?). Seems like there's not much footage available of them recording in the studio in the 60's.
Good combo.
@aberloof Agreed! I've never seen that footage before. Who knew there was footage of them at Columbia recording vocals?!?
I'd really love to see all that 'Good Vibrations' footage..........why has that never been released before? Amazing.....
wow they filmed the vocal sessions for GV????? wow how epic!
Congrats for the Grammy on Best Historical Album!
The massive facking ego of Mike Love to say how great Smile was. He was one of the reasons Brian lost his mind.
Genius.
Yep, and while Mike and his shaved down Beach Boys are touring small time gigs, Brian, Al and Dave are hitting up a lot bigger venues and will probably sell them out.
And the only reason Bruce is still with Mike is so he can get his medical bills paid.
@DrRichmann1 As Brian Wilson said to Mike Love, 'If you don't want to grow you should not want to live', I wish you a long life and the will to grow.
Miss you Carl...
OKAY what is the name of the song that is played right at 44 sec... i would really like to know
@smokeystudent -- I'm with you pal, and I've been waiting since... 1967!! Yikes. First took notice about this music that fall from reading about it in the pioneering "youth culture" magazine, Cheetah. Of course I have all the major bootlegs, but this still is such a special release and I am so looking forward to getting my box set (just a few days to go!).
@jgworkstation It's already out in some parts of the world. Australia has it right now. The UK gets it on Monday. Bottom line it's already been released.
I wonder who 'writes' these songs (I mean, who puts the 'dots' on the manuscript paper). Anyone know?
Why did they take all of the making of the smile sessions episodes off of youtube??
I GOT THE ALBUM TODAY! I THOUGHT I'D GET IT TOMORROW.
brian wilson thank u sir :)
@sjdrifter72 Unfinished? All that was needed was editing and assembly -- and now we have it. Proof of something extraordinary, something so radically different in conception from other rock records that 45 years after the fact it is still unmatched. Stringing song fragments together like A Day In The Life or the b-side of Abbey Road is quite different from the modular concept of the SMiLE music. The rock music of the '60s is something special, and sitting on the very top of the heap is Brian.
@yoshimano He actually only praises Brian's music. He doesn't dare give a big thumbs up to "...the crow cries uncover the cornfield" :-)
Mike Hate is only in this because the album is officially under the Beach Boys name and he will see royalties
Technically he worked on Love to Say Dada / In Blue Hawaii, and obviously Good Vibrations, but yeah, he felt he was getting shafted in during Pet Sounds, and they were getting even more experimental, he just was insecure about it all at the time and didn't like it.
Beach boys are great.
@briney1973 : Some critics who have heard these lost tracks a while back stated that it was evident this was better than Abbey Road. I'm a big Beatles fan. But Brian Wilson stunned the world with Pet Sounds. I agree that had this been released in 1967 it would have topped Sgt Peppers and that's an extremely hard thing to do.
Without Mark Linett and digital technology it would be impossible to compile.
I appreciate Mark's commitment and talent A LOT, and I agree that his work (and Alan Boyd's, and others') and today's technology allowed the complete SESSIONS to be heard like this; however, the album was 90% complete in 1967...with a little more time, and SOME support, Brian Wilson would've finished this then.
@@doug1542 He did end up finishing it
@@Wizard23 Not THEN (1967)
@@doug1542 my bad
@bhertzbe Yeah, apparently Brian said it ("the tapes were destroyed") in '99, but a year later said, "the tapes are in a safe place" lol. (Maybe some of the MIXDOWNS were destroyed.)
I wonder to what extent the proliferation of SMiLE outtake bootlegs--and such popular compilations as the "Purple Chick" version of SMiLE--available on the internet served as a motivating factor in the release of this masterpiece? Maybe I'll know more after watching the rest of these great videos.
♫ I'm picking up good vibrations ♫
mike love wasn't "far out" he was a hater.
This was Brian and Van Dyke's masterpiece ahead of its time all the way, Mike Love has no real place to praise it when it's common knowledge his fervent opposition to this musical direction and lyrics was perhaps the biggest factor in its shelving and maybe even Brian's loss of confidence. Who knows how much Smile could have changed music as we know it if only it saw its proper release at the time and the people around Brian were only 10% as visionary as he was?
If this album came out in 1967 it would change the record industry forever. Yeah, "summer of love" was only a good time and right place to push it all through. Artists sense it years prior. SMiLE would not only change music, but it would literally cause break-through on many other fields. Good Vibrations was the heading single, Beatles never recorded anything close to that, they were clueless quickly becoming weird LSD hippies to get liked among the masses while Sgt. Peppers wasn't even quarter of mile close to what SMiLE really happened to be.
I couldn't have said it better myself.
