Nice work and good job jumping in and giving welding a go! Getting started is the first step. Welding is a muscle memory and repetition game. Try holding the rod a tad closer to the material. If you notice the light gets brighter and the arc becomes unstable that means you are long arcing it: pulling the rod to far away from the material. A good arc gap will be the width of the rod that your using.
Material prepping just as @dankisla said is very important for clean penetrating welds👍🏻

Take a few seconds and grind the rust off to area you’re welding. I’d bet your welds come out a lot better and will be easier to strike an arc. Looks like you got the job done so good work!
