It's all an urban legend. And the song is not about someone drowning. Phil Collins has made it plain that he never witnessed anyone drowning, the song is not about any event, and he wrote the song while going through a divorce and it's tone and meaning are likely subconsciously related to that.

Every Breath You Take by Sting (with the Police), released in 1983, is a classic that drfinitely should have been incuded on this list. It rears its head every once in a while. During the 80s we fought for more than most today will never experience. That's why the 80s music is the way it is. We stood true to ourselves and that created a nationwide unity, something that doesn't exist today. Today it's to follow the crowd, no matter if bad or good but mostly bad, we didn't follow any crowds. Each of us had our own voice and we were heard. We lived the American Dream. Today there is no American Dream only sadness, fear and depression. But the 80s was ours and we lived the 80s like there was no tomorrow.

Naturally, it started with U.S. artists, but I began to enjoy other artists too (e.g., Genesis, Yes, Tears For Fears, Naked Eyes, Men At Work, etc.). When GTA Vice City came out it reignited the spark, particularly to a new generation. Sometimes I miss things like "Friday Night Videos", the hype of waiting to see the next MJ video, Hall & Oates. Careless Whisper is so misunderstood song. It's played in a lot of wedding parties, where neither the bride nor the groom understands the true meaning of the song, which is very obvious if you listen carefully to the lyrics. It's taken as a highly romantic song, thanks to the sax, whereas the song is actually about a really nasty and sad breakup. George Michael wrote it when he was 17! At that age he was capable of writing so deep song that you're left wondering what happened.

“I Wanna Dance with Somebody” was in the movie “Isn’t It Romantic” and “True” was literally in an 80’s based movie called “The Wedding Singer.” But I’m shocked that you didn’t have any songs from Duran Duran who were literally 80’s darlings! Quite literally any Duran Duran song would do but here are a few of my favorites: “Hungry Like the Wolf,” “Wild Boys,” and “The Reflex.”

Considering that Duran Duran was created as a money-making machine for the record company, that group had tremendous talent and wrote a wide variety of truly excellent songs. Not my favourite band from the era, but one that definitely has my respect.

Another fun fact: The scene at the end of the "Take On Me" video, where our hero repeatedly slams himself against the walls in an effort to break out of the comic book page and into the real world, was directly inspired by the climactic scene in the movie "Altered States," with William Hurt doing the same thing to shake off his transformation.
