You see Joel's dad instincts come out even though he is fighting it. Like this scene and the jacket scene. Plus not wanting her to see all the skeletons in the field.
Just like in the game, he's trying to resist caring about Ellie but over time his walls will come down. I hope they keep the scene where he teaches her how to use a sniper.
The letter in both game and TV is the seed planted within Joel to finally open up and become the protective father to Ellie. This episode is the catalyst for the tragic violence that is yet to come. 😉😎
Which is the jacket scene?

0:19 Joel's face in the mirror lol
That part made me laugh. Such a dad face
1:28 When Joel chuckled at Ellie's joke and she smiled in return... so cute!!
I thought it was because of the sun lol
@@emilia2647 Why would the sun make you smile?
@@major4211 it doesn’t look like a smile to me, idk what it’s called in English but his expression looks more like what people do when they got the sun in their eyes. I could be wrong but that’s just what I thought
@@emilia2647 I get his eyes squinting being a result to the sun but not his smile. Nothing is an accident with good filmmaking. They did a close up of his face after Ellie makes a joke and you see him smile. After that the camera is back on Ellie's face and she smiles shyly. The shots and camera movement are all intentional. There's no value to getting a shot of Joel reacting to the sun. Instead it is a way of showing without telling that the two are on their way to growing closer as they head out to the unknown.
@@major4211 yeah ik I didn’t say you’re wrong, just that I didn’t think of it that way. And yea getting your sub in your eyes can give you that facial expression

This scene was adorable when he's like seatbelt and reached across to help her loving these moments and the trailer for next week my goodness it's getting tense I know there's gonna be more Joel and Ellie in that episode
“It’s like a spaceship!”
*Cue the Mandalorian theme*
"seatbelt."
"yes, papa. I MEAN YES, JOEL"
The “piece of shit Chevy S10” line had me lmao. 20 years into the outbreak and the ford v chevy feud is ongoing lmao
silverado/sierra >>>>>>>> F150. Its not even close

@@Jdrf73 A 96 F250 would probably be plowing through zombies well into the next millennium lol
Fuck ford
This may be the only time ever that a seatbelt is described as "cool."
Seatbelts are cool, don't let anyone tell you otherwise
Seatbelts are cool.
False, seatbelts are cool as fuck. Anything that saves lives on such a grand scale can only be described as cool
They are cool. They stop you from dying sometimes
If a car is like a spaceship, a seatbelt is like an inertial dampener.
Really touching ending to the best episode so far for sure. The final shot got me, both in the context of the episode and the game’s classic menu screen, so iconic. Lots of emotions
LOL "Seatbelt." A born dad.
That ending fucking shot is so beautiful 😭😭😭🤧
Funny yet sad. Funny because something as mundane as a car amazes her, sad because of how much of our advancements and innovations will be lost as a result of the apocalypse. Cars, helicopters, planes, medicines, computers, all of them gone and unlikely to ever come back.
There are more than enough people in QZs with the needed intellect to bring them all back. It's just that that's not a priority until they come up with a definite cure for the disease that's looming over their heads.
the main thing i would do in an apocalypse would be to gather all engineering and math books. since other people would likely be scavenging for guns and are just trying to surive during that time, they won't really think about the future and that we would need to rebuild society someday
"It's incredible how people can more easily picture the end of the world than the end of capitalism"
This is why you need to support the Long Now Project.
@@EyebrowsGaming A statement that sounds profound, until you think about it for more than 2 seconds.
Thinking about the end of capitalism requires understanding not only capitalism, but an alternative economic system. There have been a few; feudalism, communism, etc, but they didn’t work as well as capitalism, which is why they don’t really exist any more. So you either have to conceive of technological changes that alter incentives until one of those older systems becomes more effective than capitalism, or invent an entirely new economic system.
By contrast, the end of the world requires understanding “boom everything gone”.
You can explain the end of the word to a 5 year old, you can’t explain capitalism to one, let alone the end of capitalism.
I’m so happy this series is getting more people to know Linda Ronstadt. She’s one of the best singers I’ve ever seen.
This is a masterpiece, how this song brought Bill & Frank together at the piano and then Joel & Ellie leaving their house at end listening on cassette 👏👏
I'm pretty sure the ending shot with the window was a reference to the first game's title screen.
It is
I believe Frank and Bill's bodies are in that room.
Reminded me of last of us part 2 ending shot
@@marugoro1054 yeah they are, I love how they made it a beautiful thing in the context of the episode and Also making a reference to the game main title screen :=")! Greetings friends!
I'd like to think Bill and Frank were looking out that window during their final moments.

The look on Joel’s face at :20 made me laugh. Ellie is such a child here and it’s so adorable.
And nice callback to Ellie’s love of space from the games.
Like the razor crest?
I think that The Last of Us is quite similar to The Mandalorian now since Joel and Ellie's story is similar to Mando and Grogu's own except that it is set on Earth and the fact that it turned into an apocalyptic wasteland overrun by infected people due to a mutated fungus
Omg spaceship 🥲
memories of pain :(
Not Ellie referencing the best scene from TLOU2
STOP NOOOO 💔
I like that shot of Joel through the mirror
I immediately fell in love with the last of us after this episode
Same
As much as I absolutely adore the game, it's going to be a gut punch when this girl captures Joel's heart on the TV show. Because I think the TV show is going to have Joel fighting it and fighting it until he just can't help but start viewing her as a daughter. This Joel is way more closed off than the game version. So when he finally lets his defenses down, it's going to be very emotional.
Tell me abt it! I cant freaken wait till it happens 😫😭👌❤ When he first calls her "Baby girl" my heart will shatter and melt at the same time
We will see those big beats show up in TV form thankfully (just different paths taken, but all arriving at the same points so far) They are still proper good story beats to simply just translate them to live action.
Just imagining the “You’re not my daughter” scene makes me tear up
It’s weird, he’s more closed off than game Joel but he’s also a little less cruel/ruthless so far.
Still works.
@@raven_in_disguise1649 Yeah
This whole fucking scene/sequence just melts my heart, Bella and Pedro have chemistry like no other 🙏 the innocence in Bella's eyes with Pedro's realization that he knows he can and will be there for her, beautiful 🙏🌹
Exactly
man the sound design team really killed it here. You can hear all the little noises in the car
"Its like a spaceship"
People who know: 💀
"No its like a piece of shit Chevy S10" - That was the most realistic line in this entire series.
I didn't shed a tear from 17 years and this scene someone managed to bring a tear in my eyes.
This scene among others, Joel is on his way to atleast come to term with have to care for ellie, like protect her, feed her, try to educate her when she asked about a lot of things. But he's still grieving Tess so he's still guarded. But i think one of the reason he started to sees ellie as just a child more than a cargo is how innocent she is. He told her to stay after they read the letter and she stayed on her chair, then later how she's in awe being in the car for the first time ever, like this small girl is robbed of the way the world is supposed to be and there's so much she could experience so Joel later on started to teach/offer to teach her more things(like guitar!)
"Better than nothing" - I knew it was coming
I have so many memories with this song and when the song came on, it brought back all the beautiful memories of our old home. My mother loved to hear this song before her death. I loved this scene very much, and it moved my feelings in an indescribable way.💔✨
Came here after the last of us...that was amazing. You can see Joel start to thaw and stop fighting Ellie. Franks and Bills love story, was beautiful story and as well beautifully written. This song adds sooooo much to that ending. Those last 2:30 mins are beautiful and perfect. I cant wait to see the rest of the show
Man I really hope we get to see Ellie’s birthday in this show. Such a fun break from all the doom and gloom of the last of us

if in the future episodes we get to see this scene, I can die peacefully 😌✌🏻
@@Raven28Pisces I bet they will incorporate it into a different scene because it's such a priceless scene between Ellie and Joel, I feel like they didn't do it here bc it didnt really fit the sad tone of this scene, and plus Ellie and Joel are still not too close to joke like that yet and I mean Joel is still recovering from losing Tess and just now from bill and Frank, so hes still not relaxed and open around Ellie so probs next episode or any other she will joke around like that lol and he will cringe and be flabbergasted like any Dad should lol
Pedro Pascal is a star. Best for daddy roles.

I dont know if im just dumb and everyone noticed this but this song is the song that bill played for frank in the piano scene in the show.
Beautiful moment
I wonder if this is the same song that he'll end up singing to Ellie while playing the guitar.
Doubt. That was Bill and Franks
Ellie knew how to pop a clutch, so it shouldn't be her first time in a car.
that was game Ellie, this is show Ellie
First actual connection between them ellies comment on the song Joel's laugh an elies smirk seeing him finally smile am laugh
The last person Joel ever told to wear on was Sarah

Is the classic magazine scene with the “interesting photos” in the show?
It is cut halfway, maybe in the next chapter this scene
@@nekozephyr9718 I really hope so. One of my favorite lighthearted scenes from the game. It’s got to be in there in some form
We will probably see it at the beginning of the next episode if they do it. I hope they do.
@@mau4604 I don't think they'll put it in. In the game, she basically steals it. In the show, Bill is dead.

Still suprised Joel actually said “piece of shit chevy S10” Love it for the realism but surprised they’d poke fun at a major brand, or that chevy would pay them to mention the brand, but call it shitty lol.
Its 20 years old, 20 years in the apocalypse old. Little to no spare parts, definitely no new parts. At This point every car could be called a "piece of shit" realisticly.
Youre overthrowing it.
The best scene ❤😢
I love Linda Ronstat
I wish I had a dad just like Joel , my real father abandoned me since birth
It's ok but promise me that you're gonna be a good parent to your child and take care of him/her like Joel did to Ellie
20 years after the outbreak and that chevy's still going
Very scene in this show has been perfect. Th3 acting has been impeccable 👌 what qla great job. I was worried they would fail. Because TLOU players all love the game with passion and nothing but perfection wouldn't do it justice.

Oh my friend you must be mistaken. The Last of Us never got a sequel. At least not one we acknowledge. It's like Indiana Jones 4.
Just for the sake of interest , how did she figure out where to put the music cassette if she didn 't know how to buckle up
She had a Walkman at FEDRA school and probably figured out a car radio worked similarly.
She shouldn't have known how to instantly open the door without looking
She sees Joel open the FEDRA truck in the 2nd episode genius, and while I know it's difficult to assume everyone is as challenged as you, most humans have a basic sense of intuition. Also, we can assume she has a blanket knowledge of most things as she went to school and was training to be a FEDRA member.
I watched this too many times somebody send help…
Or episode 4
I like the Chevy......
In the game she already knew how to pop a clutch. Not sure why they changed it for the show
Joel realizing Ellie dont know how to use it makes a cute scene of Joel being a dad.
"It's like a spaceship!"
"No, it's like a piece of shit Chevy S10, but it'll get us there... I think."

As the proud owner of a Ford Ranger, I agree with Joel. That is, in fact, a piece of shit Chevy S10
I thought Joel would be more of a country guy because he is a Texan and grew up in Texas lmfaoo
Mandalorian easter egg? 👽 🚀
Nope. Ellie in the games is obsessed with space travel. But it can be both at the same time lol.
Joel is a much more responsible parent with Hilda than her own biological father.
only complaint I have is that she showed no apprehension when entering the car. It's like she has pulled a handle a thousand times.

If she’s never been in a car then she definitely would’ve been clueless about a cassette tape where to put it. 😣
She does have a walkman in her backpack. and Walkmans only use cassette tapes.
@@rwwilson21 That’s true but knowing instantly where to put it in a car seems off.
@@troyjones2687 yeah knowing where to put in in the car when not having ever been in the car is continuity error.
There should be a Linda Ronstadt needle drop in each season. Sigh...
I wonder why the production used this song. Does it foreshadow the developing relationship between Joel and Ellie?
Note: I haven't played the games, so I'm a complete noob going into the franchise.
Because in a way it describes Bill and Frank's relationship in the game, which ended up due to a lack of dialogue and concessions, and that's also what you mentioned
