- The enchanting English countryside hamlet of Wycoller is like stepping into a movie set.
You can imagine, gnomes, a troll under the ancient packhorse bridge or an ogre in the hall ruins. This idyllic English countryside hamlet in Lancashire is remote and virtually car-free. It now forms part of a beautiful country park, so there are many trails you can walk and it is a great spot for a picnic on a sunny day. Charlotte Brontë passed Wycoller Hall on her way to visit friends and used Wycoller Hall as her inspiration for Ferndean in "Jane Eyre" You may have also seen the location in the 1970 film The Railway Children.
Join us as we have a wonderful walk around this magical English countryside hamlet and tell you a bit about its past.

In contrast to the green hamlet of Wycoller my favourite place is Boulsworth hill and moor that looms large over Wycoller and Trawden? It’s well worth doing a feature on since the history is fascinating with flint workshops found dating back to the time of Abraham and there is the “Ladlow stone” on top that’s been said to be a sacrificial block. Like on the bridge in Wycoller there are further cup n ring marks up Boulsworth and the wildlife up there is spectacular in spring with Sky larks, Curlews, Golden Plover, Red Grouse, Merlins, short eared owls and even the odd hen harrier.
Looks a like a beautiful place, very quiet lovely
Well youve taken us on yet another beautiful walk. What a pretty place and another familiar spot from tbe Railway Children. I love the Bronte connection too. Thanks, cheers Cheryl
Superb video. No IRRITATING music. Thank you. 😄😆🍻
Glad you liked it!
What wonderful bonus. Just what we needed for hump day. You two are great. Hugs and blessings. I am knocking on the door of 80 so I can give you two hugs. Lol
We don't mind a hug! 😊
@@MemorySeekers that’s good. Lol
Thanks for this beautiful movie!
All the old villages in England are beautiful, very special, that's why the commentary is important.
It is a pity that in the Netherlands, where I live, there are so few of these villages, but England simply has more history.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the walk and the commentary.
Thank you for the extra video, no cars, babbling brooks, very relaxing. 🐨🦘🐨🦘😷
You’re welcome 😊
Thanks for showing off some of Lancashire. Our countryside is very underrated because people usually visit our neighbours (understandably so) and miss out on us. The good thing about that though is that it keeps our countryside nice and quiet and not overcrowded 😊
We must visit more, this short hope over the county was wonderful!
Not very far from where I live, I absolutely love visiting this place as it's so captivating at any time of year.
It really is!
Thank you this was fantastic what a beautiful place it really was like going back in time .
Living in Colne I have this beautiful place on my doorstep. My late great grandfather once told me when I was kid that he would regularly walk through Wycoller and up over the moors past midnight en route from an illegal gambling place and told me he never saw no headless horsemen and that it was the living I should be more concerned about. My parents after getting married could of bought a house in Wycoller for peanuts but turned it down🙄
Wonderful! Wonderful! Wonderful! If I could transport myself to this beautiful place, I would go immediately.
😊
Another great video 👍. At one point, Penelope Keith owned a property there for quite a few years. Next time you're in this area, Downham is another lovely village and has been used for filming locations......Whistle Down the Wind, Born & Bred etc.
Thank you for that information! Whistle Down the Wind is 1 of my favourite movies. Sadly a little too late now to ever have the chance to visit/revisit some of the beautiful locations showcased in this series of videos, but these quality productions are the next best thing. 🙂
When I visited some friends in Haslemere some years back they informed me that Penelope Keith was living locally there at the time. Also the film composer Rachel Portman.
It is now pinned our travel map for next time! Thank you.
My mother used to serve her on the fruit stall in Colne nearby. She was every bit as genuine as you would hope for, albeit something sadly lacking in many celebrity types.
@@andrewbowen6875 Penelope Keith? Yep. Friends seconded that impression from experience in a shop in Haslemere.
So beautiful and peaceful. Thank you.
Another beautiful video. Thanks.
Beautiful!
Gorgeous Village. Beautifully presented and narrated too. Well done and thank you for sharing 🙂
Many thanks!
Yet another superb video of an area I know very well as I live only a couple of miles from Gawthorpe Hall, well worth a visit along with Burnley 's jewel Towneley Hall. Thanks once again.
Thank you, I have them marked on the map but it just that bit to far for the week we were there. Next time!
My Partner hails from nearby Colne so we have visited many times, its beautiful and Penelope Keith once owned a house there. Colne is also worth a visit for its strong connection to its native brave soul Wallace Hartley, band leader on the Titanic.
Thank you for sharing this information very interesting. I never knew Penelope had a home there, and will pin Colne on the map to for next time!
I'm from Lancs and never knew that. Interesting
Magical place! ♥️
I have just stumbled across your channel and just had to subscribe. Thank you for sharing this beautiful, well shot video. The complimentary narration is the perfect compliment to the pictures. thank you.

Such a peaceful & quiet natural amazing village, water sounds are just like a therapy to my mind... lovely & exquisite 👌😍... you show every corner of beautiful England 🇬🇧 in such a fantastic way that I'm so obsessed watching ur videos....
What a glorious place. Thanks for showing us.

What a beautiful little village. To stay there would be a combination of unwinding and history hunting, Thanks as always =-)
These are villages that I have never heard of and as you say ....enchanting . thank you for sharing your videos .
So glad we have been able to share some new places for you. I have to say it was new for us as well. Never heard of it before we researched the area.
Thank you, Simon, for sharing this lovely walk❤️
Beautiful , just beautiful ,thank you for this amazing video of such a tranquil place ,want to go there instantly!😀
Our pleasure 😊
What's this? A lovely midweek video from the lads! Cheers 🙂
Thank you so much for the bonus video! Such a beautiful place. Great pick me up for the middle of the week.😉
😊
A special place
Thank you M Seekers for another lovely video of scenery and history. I remember hearing somewhere that the 'Clapper' bridge is thought to be named because of the 'clap' sound the clogs made when the weavers and mill workers crossed the bridge going and coming from work.... for what its worth! Thanks again
Hello Margaret, fascinating I can imagine that would totally right! 😊 Thanks for sharing.
What a treasure! Thank you for making and showing this beautiful video .
Our pleasure!
Glorious!
Special little spot.. having been visiting here since since a kid..very local to me, and a place most locals bring their families.. great walks up and beyond too 🥾
Yes it really is special. Lovely.
So, so lovely!!!!♥️♥️
Thank you! 😊
As always, thank you so much.
What a great find and well worth a short video. As it is a remote hamlet in Lancashire I wonder what conditions are like there in the middle of winter. Maybe they get snowed in depending on how high up it is?
Think so, and they get flooding too on the beck side. The double gated property was, and maybe still is, the cafe. They often were flooded.
You can park high up above the ruin on the road there and walk down a rough path into Wycoller.
Yes you can, I pinned that on the map at 0.41( might have been a bit small) I probably should have mentioned it.
Living here would be my ideal location! Great that non-residents have to park outside of the village, and this certainly allows for its' uniqueness to continue on. Thank you for this additional mid-week video.
Haya. What an enchanting little place 🙂I always think, the more there is of a future the more there is of the history that long since passed, to think of all the footsteps of those we walk in that are no longer around, the buildings that still exist that we can all enjoy, if they could speak, think of all the things they could tell about 🙂We know of past people, yet they will never know us, always fascinates me 🙂Thanku so much for sharing. x
We know the people of the past but they will never know us! So true. Never thought of it like that.
@@MemorySeekers 🙂🙂
It is an enchanted place .
Un lugar hermoso , apacible , tranquilo lleno de paz , el sonido del agua relaja .
Pareciera que en cualquier momento sale alguien del pasado.
Este es un lugar muy especial.
Beautiful
Thank you for⚘
Beautiful place! I will go there
Great, hope you do 😊
Thank you a lovely walk
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you guys for the bonus video.Wycoller is such a lovely place to visit. Such beautiful surroundings. The chapel cottage caught my eye, I wouldn't mind staying in one of those!
It was very cute!
Absolutely delightful and very beautiful place. One of those out of the way places, that are hard to find, or hear about, but once found, it is a true delight to one's five senses. And tranquility overload as well. Thank you for this wonderful work.
Absolutely beautiful area! Clapper bridge is amazing and I can imagine Wycoller Hall must have been something to see in it’s day. You couldn’t choose a prettier location to have a home. Really appreciate this bonus video Simon and Will. ❤
The village was preserved because there were plans to flood the valley for a dam. The houses were vacated, but the plans for the reservoir were later abandoned and the buildings were uninhabited. The small keyhole cupboard at the side of the fireplace was probably for wig powdering.
多謝!
非常感謝您的超級感謝!那很親切。很開心你喜歡。
👍👍👍
Wonderful pure nourishment for my soul
How beautiful and peaceful!
Been there many times. Not too far from where I live.
😃👍прекрасная прогулка ,спасибо.
Спасибо за просмотр.
Hi 😍👍🌻
What a Pristine place. Are there any paintings or photos or Wycoller Hall during the Bronte time? What a treasure that would be. Do you know how many residents live in this little Hamlet? Ann from Va. USA 🇺🇸
It’s an abandoned ruins but they have villages around it ! I googled how people just visit but no homes there !🏴🌹
( Keyhole slot ) I think to put firewood .
🌷👍🤩💐🌺❤
Do you know of any abandoned villages that are accessible in the uk ie not under a reservoir
The only one I know of is in Dorset tynehamopc.org.uk/ and we plan to visit at some point!
any where to stay
Not in the village. It’s tiny and part of the park. Haworth is only 20 min drive away or Laneshawbridge 15 mins.
Where is the carpark?
It was shown at 0:41 but here is the link on google goo.gl/maps/g4fgypifYt9BWxiF7
It won’t be quiet and peaceful for long if lots of people watch this.
It's a very well known place, this was a weekend and you can see how quiet it is. Its a country park people are actively encouraged to come.
Wycoller? Make her call you for a change.
🤣
@@MemorySeekers All kidding aside, this was the first video I had run across by you guys. Subbed instantly and have watched half a dozen more since - amazing work! Cannot thank you enough -
