  • It’s pretty clear that Manchester United need attacking reinforcements. Ten Hag’s men have some of the worst attacking statistics in the Premier League this season and even when they finished 3rd last season, The Red Devils underperformed their xG by nearly 10 goals - the most of any team to finish in the top half of the table. To remedy this, Manchester United have been linked to a whole host of new talents, with Michael Olise the latest. So in this video, Statman Dave takes a look at his strengths and weaknesses; what he’s like as a player; before assessing whether the move makes sense…

He's injury-prone, even if he has a proven quality when playing. However, a bit of scouting could easily discover hidden gems in other markets. On the other hand, we have solutions within. Amad is a serious baller, and then there's the option of moving Mount to play as a ramdeuter on the right where he flourished under Tuchel within the right channel. Not to mention a look into the future with the likes of Shea Lacey who looks like a real talent.

This is not a good argument.mount was an inside forward in a wingback system under tuchel never a winger and that's not a system that can work in united due to personelle and it is a formation that gets stale over time.his best attributes also get brought into effect on the left.the only elite aspect of his game is his crossing from the left half space and that's taken out from the right where his crosses always seem hit and miss

We definitely don't want someone who is injury prone because you can't rely on such players at all. What we need is a explosive winger, like Rashford is (ofc with better end product). I totally agree, Dave. United should recruit more of the raw talents out there. There are plenty of talents, for every position.
I wish the new club structure will look into more of this. As you state, United can problaby buy new 3 to 6 upcoming talents in the summer and pay around 15 to 30 mill. in total. It should club policy that a certain amount of the transfer money should be to recuit talent.
With the right scouting structure, the club will find new starts for small amounts, the risk is low compared to paying 70-90 mill. for one (1) player.
A few searches on youtube showcases large number of talents.
Just to name a few worth looking at are these players:
Luciano Rodríguez, "The New Gem of South American Football"
Riccardo Calafiori, "A Real Beast Defender"
17 Year Old Rodrigo Cezar, "The New Gem of Brazilian Football"
Rokas Pukštas - "Talented and Versatile"

Olise is the real deal: He's awesome for the attack and has it all: Well-rounded. But he needs a structured team like Man City for example who employ on the wings Barnado, Grealish/Doku for example. He's right up there and the price reflects that with youth as a bonus (£65-70m imo). For sure a few areas to improve but he's already solid in the areas he plays in. I won't say more because he's doing such a great job at Palace - long may it continue.
But he'd probably be wasted at ManU like too many other players before and there's no current system there that enhances his game or else his game feeds into a system that then improves with him on the team. Harsh but true.
Tbh, I think ManU needed to do what you said right at the start after losing Ferguson and try to generate talent and boost sales instead of spending too late on a player who's value has gone up to reflect their real prospects as opposed to potential and then have a rag-tag group of players ill-fitting any system a new manager brings in...

Wirtz will probably sit around the 100 million mark and I can't imagine Frimpong leaving for less than 60 million. And the idea that a move for Olise blocks the progress of Garnacho and Amad is also just false. Garnacho is more of a left winger, although he is performing really well on the right at the moment. Amad isn't getting minutes at all and is somehow behind Antony in the team. United has Rashford who frankly is very inconsistent, Garnacho who is developing really well, Antony who is a rather big disappointment and Amad, who's not geting any minutes. We have Amad and Pellistri on wings and yet going for Olise …
Let’s give the chance to these both for now till the end of this season and if they breakout then we can save the money to buy CDM, CB and back up striker along with an RB.

No. We should NOT. He's not yet ready to join the pressure cooker of a club like UTD. He knows it too. That's why when Chelsea came knocking on his door, he didn't let them in. I do have a strong belief in Amad Diallo. He's the kind of player who can break through low blocks. Of course Garnacho is an untouchable based on how he's performance.

We should be out there buying top players, not young talent to hopefully make a profit on in a few years. We're not Brighton. Olise has proven himself in the Prem, he's resdy made as such. The price is a lot and we should have bought him when he was cheaper but I'd prefer to spend more on proven than less on unproven. Look at Amad/Pellistri. Cheaper options who aren't looking like the real deal still. Both been at the club for years.

Save the 60M and bring back Greenwood for free. Easiest decision there is tbh. Spend almost all of the summer transfer budget on CBs to replace our current aging CBs plus maybe a 6/8 for when Casemiro moves on.

  • @dafunkyshit

If you're going to make such sweeping statements like 'Olise is lacking defensively', why don't you use statistics to corroborate this, as you had no trouble citing fbref's statistics regarding his take-ons, SCAs, his dead-ball specialty, etc?
Because if you bothered to look at his defensive stats, many of them are very high for an attacker (tackles, interceptions, blocks and clearances per 90).
You could easily point out though that he ranks in the 40th percentile for 'percentage of dribblers tackled per 90' (which is obviously slightly below average), and 8th percentile of 'challenges lost', which is very poor.
Then you could see, however that he is tackling a very high volume of dribblers (ranking in the 94th percentile for that stat), and then conclude that he is in a side that spends a lot of time defending, and therefore, in context, his defensive statistics actually do appear quite good, albeit with some room for improvements with timing his challenges.
