How to make a Native American Style PVC flute key of G!
Here are some tools and material you may need
3/4 inch PVC pipe - amzn.to/2zdlXlt
Drill Bit Set - amzn.to/2BblbXH
Key Hole file set - amzn.to/2zegGKo
Its a really low cost and really rewarding build! you will need a piece of 3/4 inch (19 mm) schedule 40 PVC pipe at least 19 inches long! Its better to make it long so when you tune it you wont start out below the key you want. You will need a cork from a wine bottle, they work really well for this size pipe. You will also need a needle fine set and a flat file.
The first step is to make a center mark on you pipe so all your holes will line up. The easiest way to accomplish this is to take a piece of wood at least the length of your pipe and but your pipe up against it, then simply take a pen or a marker and run it along the top of your piece of wood, as shown in the video.
Now you will need to make a line from one end of the pipe the first line is 1 7/8 inch (48mm) from the end and the second is at 3 1/2 inches (89mm). Then you will use your flat file to file the pipe between those two marks, until the flat part is about 7/16 inch (11mm) wide, This is the part of the flute that will generate the sound.
Now you will need to mark a line where your holes will go at 2 1/4 inches (57mm) and at 3 inches (76mm). Now drill a 3/16 inch (5mm) hole in the spots you just marked. Next you will need to draw out the actual hole size you need which is a square, 3/16 inch (5mm) by 3/8 inches (10mm), This is where you will need the needle files set. The first hole that you filed out is where the air will be blowing out of and the second is the hole that the air will be forced to blow back into, this is where the noise is made. Next you will need to file down the front of the second hole you filed out, you will need to file it down at a 45 degree angle as shown in the video.
Next you will need to get a measurement between the two holes you filed out, it should be around 1/2 inch (12.5mm) Now you will need to cut the wine bottle cork down to this size and push it inside the pipe until it is between the two holes, as shown in the video.
Now you will need to make your bird, this is the part that will force the air coming up from the first hole to go into the second hole that you beveled at a 45 degree angle. I simply took a piece of 1 inch (25mm) pipe and cut it to 1 1/2 inches (38mm) long, Then I took a hand saw and cut one side of the pipe length wise as shown in the video, then all you do is slid it over the end of the pipe you have been working on and adjust it until you get the low tone you are looking for, you wont need to blow very hard at all for this flute to work, in fact if you blow too hard it wont make the low pitch and you wont get it tuned right.
The next step is to tune it, you will need a tuner of course, you can download one on your phone like I did to make it easier. Now to tune a flute you will be cutting off the opposite end you have been working on, you will only want to do about 1/8 inch (3mm) or less at a time because a little goes a long way when tuning. Something to keep in mind is the shorter the pipe the higher the tone, If you go too far you will have to start all over and make another flute, or you could simply extend the flute with a PVC coupling, I haven't tried this so I cant guarantee it will work, but its worth a shot. Once you are getting close to the desired note, you will need to finish it up with your flat file so that you don't take too much off.

All you need to put into this is the size pipe you are using and the key you are tuning your flute to. I show more about this in the video. You can adjust the holes sizes like I did to make it a specific drill bit size like I did. I made all my holes 5/16 inches (8mm). The chart will tell you where to put your finger holes measuring from the end you cut down to tune it. The measurements I had were as follows 4 1/16in (103mm), 5 7/16in (138mm), 6 13/16in (173mm), 7 5/8in (193mm), 8 3/4in (222mm), and 9 5/8in (244mm)

- [ ] I had see the app before seeing on you video. I viewed someone else’s video that was just like yours. Having viewed other flute building videos, I was aware that a good practice is to cut the PVC pipe a little longer (my current build is 18.5 inches long and test as being close to F#. Also, a good practice I have seen it recommended to drill the note holes slightly small diameter to allow for adjustments. I had originally planned to make the flute with 5 holes instead of 6. I have the third hole from the sound hole taped closed. My current build will have 5 holes. My decision now is how much smaller, 1/4” or 3/16”. I consider my flute as my version of a traditional native flute. I want to thank you for making the video and responding to my comment.

You have given a very fine detailed account for making the flute. Have you ever made a chromatic flute? this flute has eleven holes and is played vertically but needs a sling to hold the instrument when all fingers are off. There are m any articles and patents on this type of flute but none give details on actually making the flute as you have so well done for your f lute. thank you.

Thank you AJ for your reply to my comments. I am pleased that I made you aware of something new. As you are a craftsman, who else to build the chromatic flute. One does not have to be a flutist to research and possibly even invent a different type of flute. You will find many patents for the type of flute I referred to. But they are originally Chinese and the translation is hilarious but the illustrations are very clear and understandable. There is also information on the only English made eleven hole flute and is accessible under Giorgi Flute. Also there is a video on CZcams describing a DIY pvc chromatic flute accessible under the tag Chromatic F lute. For sure there is no lack of information on the chromatic flute. Also interesting is the CZcams video accessible under the tag Flatsax in F which seems to be ideal for conversion into a chromatic instrument. I hope you will develop an interest in the instrument sufficient to get you into making one for the benefit of a huge number of chromatic instrument aficionados . All the very best to you, Sir.

How much will the sound vary if I make this with 1/2 inch pipe instead of 3/4 inch pipe?
If you look in the discription you will find a link to a website called nafluteomat. Change the bore size and it will show you how to make out of 1/2 inch pipe
What is it that decides the lowest note on the flute? Is it only the length of the flute and the size of the bore, or is it the angle of the cutting edge or something as well?

I can honestly say ive never tried it, but pvc is pretty soft so it might work. I'd say give it a try!
In naflutomat, is the "total bore length" the full length from end to end, or just the end to the breath holes?
Because it says to cut to a certain length, but the flute is already higher than I'd hoped (D5 at 24" with no holes drilled). Won't cutting it raise the tone more?
Yes! Cutting it shorter will definently make it higher. I believe the total bore length was from the sound hole to the end if I remember correctly.
But to be honest I always made it several inches longer than it said and cut it down to the key I liked. The main purpose I used that site was for the finger holes.
But if you want a really low pitched. Or bass sound you will have to use a larger diameter pvc. I made a video making one in the key of C4. It was pretty low but it was pretty difficult to play, not impossible but very difficult.

Good night, teacher. In the NAFlumat site, in what stage is it possible to identify the total length of the flute and the space to make the region of the TSH? thank you. I await your reply.
Ill be honest with you, I'm not 100% sure on how to answer the question. I only know the basics of how to work that site. I just guessed at the over all length and cut it down until I got down to the key I needed. Just start out with the pipe longer that you would expect it to be and slowly cut it down until you get close to the key you are looking for. Once you get really close use a file to cut away even slower because it is easy to over do it and then you would have to start over.
I have 1" schedule 40 pipe, how do I determine where to put the sound hole?
For this flute to be in the key of g you will need to use 3/4 inch pipe. I did make a video using 1 inch pipe but it was a much lower key and alot harder to play

How do you determine the length of the slow air chamber (SAC)? I’ve seen in a number of NA style flutes where the length of this chamber is at least 5 inches going to up 8 inches in many designs. You seemed to have chosen 2-3 inches, is this a standard for PVC flutes?
This video "worked" because I made it EXACTLY by your instructions and it turned out EXACTLY as it's supposed to. The only problem is, now I'm bored with the key of G major and need to make another one in a different key!
I said the exact same thing after making the fist one. So k made another video in the key of c4. Its super low toned and pretty hard to play. But it was a cool project.

Hey I'm doing this project for school. And I have a question about the bird that how's over the two holes at the top. You said the bird is suppose to be 1". I tried that and it's way too big to fit over the 3/4" pipe. Should the bird be 3/4" as well.
I did this and yet no sound is coming out I feel like I'm missing something
@@robinhurst3958 did you use pvc pipe or cpvc? With the white pvc pipe the inside diameter of the pipe is 3/4 inch. And with cpvc the outter diameter of the pipe is 3/4 inch.
I used the white pvc pipe 3/4 inch for the flute and 1 inch for the birdy and it fit perfectly as shown in the video
@@MrNu1982 there cpuld be a number of steps you forgot to do that would cause this. Did you bevel the front hole at a 45 degree angle? Did you put the plug (wine bottle cork) inside the pipe between the two holes? And did you make sure you cut the cork down to the right size? It has to fit between the two holes, but it can't be too big or it will block the air flow to the second hole.
I suggest re watching the video and making sire you didn't miss a step

If you go to the description I explain where to put your holes. Also go to 6:00 and I explain it in the video. You measure from the very end of the flute, not from the sound hole but from the opposite end.

I wish I knew the answer to this but I'm not really much of a flute player, it was a fun build and I enjoyed playing it but I dont know much about playing a flute, sorry I couldnt help more

@@audreymcknight the length of the pipe depends on what key you are tuning it to. There isn't a place to enter the length you just put in the inside bore diameter and what key you want to tune it to. Then you cut your pipe longer than you would expect and slowly cut it down until you reach the desired key.

i did everything exactly how you did but my notes are out of pitch except for the lowest note?

rookie591 hmm I didnt seem to have this problem. If they are too high you can use a small file to make the holes slightly larger which should lower the tone. If its too low already then you have gone too far. It could be that your flute wasn't tuned 100% dead on before you drilled the holes. Or it could be that you moved the drill bit a little too much causing the holes to be slightly larger.
It could also have alot to do with the amountof air you at. Blowing into the flute. You need to put a steady amount of air but at a low pressure to achieve the proper tones.

Hmm its been a while since I've made one, I am sure the video is right but I would start with 19 inches just to be sure, its easier to cut extra off than it is to add pipe to it.

Well that depends on which hole your reffering to
any of them....I mean what did you use to measure the hole.

I suppose in theory it could be, I am not sure it would have the same tone. But you could always try it and see for yourself.

I honestly dont remember, I gave this flute away a while back. But if you start with 19 inch total length and follow the instructions you should end up getting it tuned correctly

I built this flute. Easy build. However, while the tune of the 18” pipe is spot on (G4) and G5 is spot on, all the other notes are quite sharp. This is not an easy fix.
Did you use the fluteomate website I linked in the description or just go off of my measurements?
I changed all my holes to be the same size to make it easier for people to build, if you put in your dimensions into the website I linked in the description as I showed in the video you may be able to get a more accurate sound.
