  • Nicolas Bras takes the TEDx stage to remind us of the beauty found in simplicity.
    Armed with nothing but PVC pipes and an assortment of simple tools, Nicolas challenges our perceptions of traditional instrument-making. As a homemade instrument builder and musician, he creates DIY flutes live, demonstrating the possibilities of ingenuity and resourcefulness.
    Through his hands, ordinary plumbing materials evolve into intricate musical instruments, each with its unique sound and character.
    This talk is not just about music; it's a testament to the magic that ensues when creativity meets everyday objects.
    He’s classically trained for guitar and percussions but still consider himself self-taught after 15 years of manufacturing his own instruments and more than one thousand prototypes.
    He travels all over the world for concerts, talks, workshops and any creative invitation that will allow him to progress in his quest for musical instruments.
    Back to his workshop, he shares his projects and creative processes on CZcams and other social media platforms to hundreds of thousands of followers. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    The passion he has for manifesting music out of what some would could consider non-musical is a win for the potentiality of humanity.

    I really liked the rotative trumpet ''elephant roar'' at 4:55. Does anyone know a video where he plays more with this. (and all the other things that he didn't have time for here, basically.)

    He always has no time to play in brass (vibrating lip) fashion of instruments. Haha!

    Im sorry, I guess that’s kind of neat, but it sounds terrible. None of those “instruments” actually produce any sort of musical tone. What’s the point here?

    • @musicien.du.dimanche
      @musicien.du.dimanche Před 5 měsíci +6

      It doesn’t sound terrible. You’re not used to ear those kind of sounds that’s all. Clarinette, flute, trumpet, work on the same principle, the air vibrate into a container, and create sounds. Nicolas made some instruments that sound exactly the same that the original ones made of wood. Here, the tunning is not perfect on every instrument because he doesn’t have time to spend on stage to do it with enough precision. But the point is made. Making those modular instruments from pvc is dope.

      there is infinite possibility here, and it actually is fairly hard to tell the difference from a recorder or flute. There is a reason Hans Zimmer bangs on about PVC pipe so much. he uses it all the time in his scores.

      This might be a bit "raw" in sound but as a source gives incredible opportunities of creating music. Nicolas is a great artist and craftsman.
