- Welcome to Episode 1 of the Old School VS New School Analysis series. Each episode we'll breakdown an old hand from an Old School feel based perspective and then do it again from a modern theory approach. This week we have a hand from an old High Stakes Poker Show where I tangle with Gus Hansen. There's plenty in here about feel, ranges, GTO, Cash Game theory, and much more. Episode 2 will focus on an old WSOP Tournament of Champions hand with Mike Matusow.

Good idea.but what about when you think you know that your opponent isn't thinking about the game on that level? The current analysis you did is "old-type-player vs. old-type-player" and "new-type-player vs. new-type-player"...but I think an added section of "new-type-player vs. old-type-player" in this spot would be very interesting to see where the most exploitive EV can be gained (or where the new type player might be leveling themselves)
You would still use the same method as a new school player. For example, "My range should defend this turn 50% of the time, but against this player, I think they are under bluffing and are more weighted towards value, so I will gut some of my calls and defend a little tighter as an exploit."
@@dnegspoker Thanks for this! I grow up see you in tournaments on ESPN. And now I learned a lot more about poker thanks to your work. You're the Poker GOAT! :)
@@dnegspoker Yes, that makes a lot of sense. I think adding thes insights into the segment would be a good addition. Definitely looking forward to watching more of these!
Funny you said that. I've been playing about 25% of hands purposely "old school" because I came to the same conclusion at times the agro new school level themselves and let you into some high implied odds

As someone who is an amateur poker player with an “old school knowledge” this sounded like
First part: intelligent poker theory
Second part: hdkwidhxbckekekfuchbwo
Please tell me what card room I can find you at lol
I am in the same boat. I think the idea is like, when he calls the all in for example, he's considering ALL possible hands his opponent could have (based on the bets made previously) and looking at the percentage of the time (in all combinations) it's a good call in that position.
This is what makes a world class poker player; someone who's been playing for decades, but who is still willing and able to incorporate more knowledge into their playing style based on what they learned more recently.
omg crack content - you literally couldn’t make enough episodes for this series and hope for many more.
I love this episode, this is gonna be an amazing serie🌻
Rarely do you see a side by side of a person 20 years apart and literally the only difference is facial hair and hair lol. Everyone else woulda gained like 40 pounds
I gained muscle and lost fat!
Veganisim
Please do more of these Old School, looking back analysis. The game has changed alot and it's fun to see aswell :)
That is the plan!
@@dnegspoker Glad to hear Daniel! Love your channel and the inside view we get on things about poker. Keep it up mate!
This is the content I want the most from DNegs, thanks champ! Hope this is a regular series because there is an incredible amount of hands in your career to review like this. Skol!
I'm so excited to see more of this! incorporating what I have learned in your videos + your masterclass has upped my game exponentially!
Love this for a new series. There are sooo many epic hands you've been involved in that can be dissected like this. Very much looking forward to more of this 👍
Spot on content! CZcams optimal dissection and interest combination for old timers and new comers!
Perfect one by Daniel here!
Love to see you as an old school player staying relevant and competitive with the thousands of new school competition. As they say, evolve or go extinct. Keep it up! Cheers from Northern Ontario
i freakin love this.. i don't play poker much anymore, but it's so fun to just hear you break down hands and strategy and game theory at such a high level.
This idea was a GREAT idea! Will watch it over and over again. Please continue and do more analysis like these!
Loved the Idea! Looking forward for the next episodes 🙌🏻
Love this! It is such a shot across the bow to Hellmuth! I love that you continue to be such a student of the game. Keep these coming!
Love the idea for this video and the comparative analysis. Very helpful. Also wanted to say I really enjoyed your Masterclass.
Good stuff, always good to hear from you thanks.
Good video. I think this series of videos will be really interesting. I like hearing the thought process behind hand decisions that pros make.
awesome analysis, really enjoyed the video
Keep'em coming!
finally you are elegible as one of the greatest of all time. Competent in any era. That HU challenge was your holy grail at the end.
These are really fun Daniel. Great job! Thank you for sharing your knowledge
I love it! Thanks for doing this. Looking forward to more!
Very nice wrap up! I was a little confused but at the end understood everything!
Always love your content Daniel thanks!
This video was amazing Daniel!! Can’t wait for the other videos!! Your the GOAT!!! 🐐
Really enjoyed it! Look forward to watching more!
These videos are awesome! I'm such a low level player but I am learning so so much watching your videos. Thanks for the great content!
Great video! Wish to see more : ) Thanks for sharing this!
And you will!
awesome series i look forward for the next episodes!
This is a great idea for a series! Will you be doing just your own hands or others too?
The first batch will be hands I was involved in but may branch out too
@@dnegspoker that would be cool! Been a fan for many years. Nice to see someone putting so much effort into poker content for the masses!
The Dwan Ivey hand from HSP (Dwans bluff vs Iveys A6dd) would be a good one. Always wanted to know what you thought Ivey had when you said you knew what he had
@@dnegspoker it would be even better to compare an "old school" hand with a more recent very similar hand and compare what players did. I know it is difficult to find the exact same hand in the same spot happened years later but it wuold be even more fun and clear. Anyway your explaination was very clear and i think that this new series is lit! I don't see any other professional p player do this kinds of "teaching video" as good as you do so please keep going we love it. Bye man see you in the next video
@@dnegspoker I would like to believe that I'm a reasonably smart guy. Perhaps I'm not as smart as I think I am (Dunning Kruger effect?). This whole hand range concept leading to putting my opponent on a range of hands is overwhelming. Its almost too much. Rick Salomon bets so fast and wins alot of money. I highly doubt he's thinking about poker to this level of detailed analisis. Doyle Brunson has said, "I don't know what yall think about?" I'm not minimizing or being dismissive in any way. If this new and modern way to play is truly correct then cool :) I'm willing to pay for a course and study. But are you sure this "new" way is really correct? Intellectualy I understand the concepts. It's just too much to think about in the middle of a hand. I either need more practice and study or my mind isn't that quick. Anyway... great video.
@@johnferris9526 i was feeling the same way couple years ago...you learn to think quicker each time you play...now when i play i think about all that almost as an instinct...you'll get there just gotta work hard :)
Great idea for a series these are super cool!
Excellent idea Mr. Negs, I noticed that I'm NOT the only player coming back these days from a 10+yrs break since Black Friday, so a lot of people that watched these "live" will appreciate it. Even if we might not be playing NLHE these days. Nostalgia + Education? Sign me the fuck up.
Awesome Video!!! Thanks Daniel for the lessons..
What a fun concept for content. I'd love to see more like this.
There will be one a week I think
@@dnegspoker World series Vlogs this summer???
Love this series! 👏🏼
Genius idea for a series. Looking forward to new episodes!
that's an amazing format, keep it up!
I reminisce about all the great HSP hands, and watch them back often. 😊 Looking forward to the next video already 👍
Fantastic idea, Daniel. Really appreciate it.
These are awesome! I love this series
Tremendous value in these types of breakdowns for an older player like me.
GREAT STUFF! Thanks Daniel!
Happy to enjoying with these hands analysis again from The Greatest of all time 🔥
that was great!!! love the two angles......would love to have had gus on to hear his take>>>>maybe an idea...... great stuff!
Woah! Didn’t even know you had a CZcams channel. This is great! I’ll be sure to watch all the great content you’ve posted. 😃👍🏻
Love it! Keep it coming!
Not gonna lie, a lot of the new school thinking goes right over my head! Hope I can learn it
Takes a bit but eventually It comes natural
Get studyin!
Love this series! Keep it coming
Love this Video, also I'd love to see some Stud 8 hand reviews
Could you just do this all day? This is awesome
Not gonna lie but the first thing that came to my mind when I saw Dnegs Vs Gus was the quads vs boat hand 66v55
Same here.. wonder if that's going to be part of an upcoming video.. I've watched that hand dozens of times, such a massive cooler
im not really into the long videos unless it's a vlog so i haven't been wathing you much lately but this series idea is gonna be awsome :D keep it up Dnegs. Love from Serbia
Nice vid Dnegs, great concept.
Daniel your a legend!! Love the vids!
this is great! now you can teach us all the old school ways so when i build that time machine!
Yaass Danny boy keep em coming!!
most personal favorite content you've put out.
Hahah during the first half of the video, the analysis was so old school that I half-expected you to say "So I thought I'd raise to find out where I'm at."
How can anyone be a poker fan and not love Daniel Negreanu lol. When you start thinking about poker on this level the game really starts making sense.
This is a *fantastic* idea !! great, great, great !
¡Siempre magistral! Jugando y analizando la mano.
This is very informative. I love this one. Question.. how do you determine when to play old school style vs new school style? Playing your everyday neighborhood poker game vs playing a tournament with a more professional aspect?
This is amazing man. Thank you.
thank you Daniel for sharing your knowledge and for being you ✔🙂
Daniel makes poker so much better! Thans kid!
Amazing video. Thanks!
This is a great video concept
10/10 Idea for a video Daniel, really enjoyed it
wow ty for this Daniel
Despite disagreeing with some stuff you've said in the past, I really appreciate that when the new school of players came about and ultimately destroyed those old school characters you see. Where your peers dismissed them as novice players, you realised that their thinking, our thinking, was the future. Ultimately making yourself a very strong presence in this arena too. You certainly continue to hold my respect for that.
That quad 5s hand against Gun Hansen stuck with me for years. And Daniel seemed so close actually laying it down.
I've been watching Brad Owen's vlog of late and the lingo and style has sure changed since the Poker Star days. Your comments at the end about betting your range made me think of a Phil Hellmuth moment where the hand is turned over and he jumps up in disbelief at how the opponent played the hand he had. Makes me wonder if the new style isn't just quantifying/simplifying all the experience behind that 'old school feel' perspective as you put it.
I'm going to have to go through this whole series/ every video on your channel. Every little bit helps. Hire you haven't had this channel for years without me knowing.
Superclip și super explicații! Cred că ești jucatorul cu cel mai mare simț al acestui joc! GG
PS: Imi plac mult ochelarii tăi, aș vres sa-mi fac și eu unii la fel!
Hey I would really love a video of an analysis of the time you had sixes full of eights and lost a big pot to quad 5s. Your videos are really informative and good!! You are gift to the poker community!!!!
I really like these old school vs new GTO approach to old hands.
Thanks for this brilliant lesson.
This was great Daniel. Do the hand you played against Gus on high stakes poker when he beat your full house with quads, at the time i think it was the highest ever televised pot of around $900,000.
Love these old school hands!
I remember in a cash game I RFI on the small blind with 98 diamonds, three players called behind me. Same board showed I betted just liked you explained and everyone folded much to my amazement.
Great vid, Dan!
Great breakdown thank you
Salutari din Romania Daniel..felicitari pentru munca depusa!
Great topic!
Good idea Daniel
I play the old school way and have been very successful for the last 25 years. I study and have a very deep understanding of new school methods but I believe with live poker the ability to read your opponents is the most important thing besides actually getting decent cards at least 20percent of the time. I do believe there is not enough emphasis on the ability to read the table.
Online poker is more about the maths. Live poker - old ways is better
Well done Daniel. This is coming from a big Doug Polk fan.
I think Mercier was in BB not SB :) but good to see this kind of series...GL
love this
Loved this
Go 4 it daniel...we got ur back..💯
Great idea for a video!
like the idea, because while i "get" you now have to deal in range vs range, i also still have " old school " ideas popping up in my head.
amazed that only 10 yrs is now " old school".. i think Doyle played the same way for 30+ yrs, and shredded everyone.. now, seems like there's a new "Meta" Poker theory every 2-3 yrs..
LOVE THE TSHIRT!!!!😍
Hey D'Negs, excellent idea and very intereesting analysis. Will you be looking at hands that would be materially different from old school thinking to new school? Maybe would have been played completely differently. And, is there still a place in poker for good old intuition?
I'm sure some of the hands I would have played differently, but even if I didn't, the key is my thought process today would be more advanced
Fkkk yea daniel ! Your heads up game has been sick 😷lately! So happy to have results to quiet the haters!
Man I miss Gus Hansen crazy bugger!. Was always a pleasure watching any matches you had with him Daniel.
If you've never read Gus's book about the Aussie Millions, give it a go. Really puts you in his head to see the logic behind his "crazy" moves.
I see you Gus taking a sneaky Peak at Daniels cards when he lifts them. @ 6.41.
Impressive how you manage to stay relevant, that's some hard work!
