  • Welcome to Episode 1 of the Old School VS New School Analysis series. Each episode we'll breakdown an old hand from an Old School feel based perspective and then do it again from a modern theory approach. This week we have a hand from an old High Stakes Poker Show where I tangle with Gus Hansen. There's plenty in here about feel, ranges, GTO, Cash Game theory, and much more. Episode 2 will focus on an old WSOP Tournament of Champions hand with Mike Matusow.

    Good idea.but what about when you think you know that your opponent isn't thinking about the game on that level? The current analysis you did is "old-type-player vs. old-type-player" and "new-type-player vs. new-type-player"...but I think an added section of "new-type-player vs. old-type-player" in this spot would be very interesting to see where the most exploitive EV can be gained (or where the new type player might be leveling themselves)

    • @dnegspoker
      @dnegspoker  Před 3 lety +107

      You would still use the same method as a new school player. For example, "My range should defend this turn 50% of the time, but against this player, I think they are under bluffing and are more weighted towards value, so I will gut some of my calls and defend a little tighter as an exploit."

      I am in the same boat. I think the idea is like, when he calls the all in for example, he's considering ALL possible hands his opponent could have (based on the bets made previously) and looking at the percentage of the time (in all combinations) it's a good call in that position.

      @@dnegspoker I would like to believe that I'm a reasonably smart guy. Perhaps I'm not as smart as I think I am (Dunning Kruger effect?). This whole hand range concept leading to putting my opponent on a range of hands is overwhelming. Its almost too much. Rick Salomon bets so fast and wins alot of money. I highly doubt he's thinking about poker to this level of detailed analisis. Doyle Brunson has said, "I don't know what yall think about?" I'm not minimizing or being dismissive in any way. If this new and modern way to play is truly correct then cool :) I'm willing to pay for a course and study. But are you sure this "new" way is really correct? Intellectualy I understand the concepts. It's just too much to think about in the middle of a hand. I either need more practice and study or my mind isn't that quick. Anyway... great video.

Where your peers dismissed them as novice players, you realised that their thinking, our thinking, was the future. Ultimately making yourself a very strong presence in this arena too. You certainly continue to hold my respect for that.

Your comments at the end about betting your range made me think of a Phil Hellmuth moment where the hand is turned over and he jumps up in disbelief at how the opponent played the hand he had. Makes me wonder if the new style isn't just quantifying/simplifying all the experience behind that 'old school feel' perspective as you put it.

    I play the old school way and have been very successful for the last 25 years. I study and have a very deep understanding of new school methods but I believe with live poker the ability to read your opponents is the most important thing besides actually getting decent cards at least 20percent of the time. I do believe there is not enough emphasis on the ability to read the table.
