This is and will always be my favorite interpetation of Smaug. The voice, the gestures, the unique design.
I like the design because he's not the a-typical dragon we've always come to know. It opened my eyes to even more imagination not only because I was a kid when I saw this, but Rankin-Bass can really make some unique flares to it's creatures and character design. They gave us THUNDERCATS for cryin' out-loud! Smaug gave me the ever-lasting impression that something ingrained in our psyche can be more than just the generic to get the image across. Kind of like how He-Man & The Masters of the Universe meshed swords & sorcery with sci-fi elements.
Also, the eyebeams give a sense that NOTHING can hide from his gaze. As fearsome as the gaze of the Eye of Sauron himself. I mean, my gawd, who thought of that BEFORE the live-action movies? GENIUS I say! GENIUS!
The voice of Smaug is both intimidating, wise, and ancient, DEMANDING of respect; hence the humble Mr. Baggins.Smaug sounds like... like a cranky old man that just wants to be left alone with his treasure and tell the kids to get off his lawn; but still this old man is strong and back up his words with more than curses and shaking fist. When Smaug makes his "boasts", you immediately know that you don't have to believe him, because you know what he speaks is frighteningly true,
And then, there is the laugh,,, The chilling all-knowing laugh that runs a chill down your spine that fills you with anticipated dread ringing in the back of you mind: "He knows... He knows". At first it's has he found Bilbo? No, but then he says something else that still has your number. He's guessed the riddle and now innocent people are going to die. And then he backs it up. Laughing and scoffing like a cat playing with it's prey and to answer Bilbo's threat with a "HA!" as if to remind him what he and all before Smaug are but meant to be stamped beneath him like so many ants.
Benedict Cumberbatch has a great performance but he was not as intimidating and just seemed like they panned the whole scene for time to make it a two-part movie.

I think you meant to say "typical" not "a-typical". Also I think this version has a good idea for what Smaug should look like but as a gen-z kid, the animations are hard to appreciate. Voice is great though. Dialogue is a bit inconsistent in quality, being more or less copy-pasted from the book. Saying "Strong" three times is just not a natural way to speak imo. I'd say most people in this comment section are either "quirky" in their tastes or they're riding a nostalgia high when they say "this is better than Jackson's Smaug". Like objectively, Jackson's Smaug is just of a higher quality, but it's got twenty-first century technology and blockbuster money backing it so I get that it's an unfair comparison.
I also wouldn't call Jackson's Smaug "generic". It's pretty derivative obv. but the way his mouth curves upward at the end instead of the standard point or flat snout and his horns are more like a mane of feathers the way they spread out and fold back.
I just think this Smaug is more lore accurate and Jackson's Smaug is sleeker and modeled to appeal to the sensibilities of general audiences. Like anyone who isn't a Tolkien fan will probably gripe about the ridiculousness of putting FUR on a DRAGON. That's like giving a woodpecker a glass beak, not practical.
TL;DR : Noice post I agree mostly except at the end where you say Cucumberbranch's Smaug isn't intimidating. Also I think you meant to say "typical" not "a-typical" in your third sentence.loveyoubye¯\_(ツ)_/¯

While Benedict Cumberbatch did a great job as Smaug, I prefer this more prideful boast, not to mention the suspense that is present throughout this speech. While Jackson's Smaug is flying and moving around while doing his speech, this one simply builds it up slowly, until the end leaves the watcher in awe of Smaug's power. So this adaption definitely did the speech better. Not to mention that while Cumberbatch was more sly and cunning, this one is bombastic and theatrical.

squashedeyeball What I really love about this version of Smaug is that dark chuckle of his beginning at twenty one seconds in; it was one of the most brilliant things in this adaptation. It just screams personality to me; that incredibly smug sense of superiority imbued within him.
When he hears about the mere concept of someone plotting against him, he doesn't freak the hell out. I mean, why would he? He's remained unchallenged for years; he decimated a Dwarven Kingdom beforehand, and he's just been lying all comfy in the treasury ever since.
So when this concept of a challenge is presented to him, and that dark chuckle sets in, it just says "...Really? Like...really? You really want to start this shit? I don't think you do, little man." I honestly find that response a lot more frightening than him taking immediate offense to intruders.
When he senses Bilbo at first he's not angry or immediately enraged of his presence, he's just like "Yeah whatever, this is a bit new. I'll admit. Amuse for a little bit before I decide what to do with you." There's a bit more of a subtle arrogance for me in that kind of collected nonchalant persona. And when he DOES get mad, there's a pretty big difference between Boone Smaug and Benedict Smaug; it's how they handle the concept of a challenge.
When Benedict Smaug finds out about the plot against him he's understandably enraged, but there's something else present in his voice-a visible twinge of fear. He would never admit it, and if it was pointed out to him he'd get even angrier about it, but there is part of him that is fearful of the challenge presented to him once more.
He knows that last time there WAS a threat that could've ended him, it's resurfaced again, and it could potentially kill him. He doesn't want to think about it though, because the thought of puny little humans killing him enrages him as much as it frightens him; which again, he'd never admit.
What does Boone Smaug do with the challenge presented? He's not fearful at ALL; he just wants everybody dead. The determination is just as strong as Benedict's, but the difference is Boone Smaug doesn't show fear of the situation at hand.
He's a gigantic ancient beast, and Laketown is made of insects that couldn't possibly harm him (in his own mind, due to his ego); so what does he have to fear? Nothing. He's already won, him going on another rampage is just an encore performance in his mind. I guess I actually do prefer the elderly, patient yet vindictive Smaug to the overly aggressive one. Benedict is a great Smaug, but I just like Boone's patience with the character better.

Awesome point of view man. Yeah. Benedict Smaug had some paranoya to him while Boone's Smaug was sane lol That being said, Imagine how awesome is would be to see Ancalagon in screen... His mere sneezing is like a carpet bombing of cluster bombs.
Although, in the battle of the five armies (may/may not be a spoiler) ***spoiler*** Smaug is a little different in sense that he is a total beast.

    • @barraki92reborn
      @barraki92reborn Před 9 lety +23

squashedeyeball I just appreciated Boone's patience with Smaug more than I did Benedict's often easily angered nature with the character. With something ancient and massive, even if it's anger is something truly legendary to behold, I've always pictured a being that old to be more wizened where it wasn't immediately angered by the thought of a challenge.
Not only that, but as I said, Benedict's Smaug has a twinge of fear (alongside his rage) in him when he hears about Laketown's supposed uprising. While Boone's Smaug is pissed too, there's no hint of fear in his voice; he's just angry at the thought of these little ants trying to pick a fight with him when they already lost.
Like, imagine if you had all the power to dominate mortal life, pretty much nothing could stop you, and then the very same people you crushed beforehand tried to make a second attempt at your life several years later. Wouldn't that annoy you a bit?
That you already proved your point that you invincible years earlier, but then the same idiots you crushed didn't learn their lesson? It's like a very, very angry teacher trying to teach a really stupid kid common math; and then gets pissed as hell at him when all the other students get it, but he doesn't.
So to me, Smaug's anger here comes from a number of things. One, the thought that he's just content to lay where is and doesn't want to get out of his golden bed; he has what he wants and he's comfy with it. Two, the fact that the same beings he dominated didn't learn their lesson, and are like barking puppies that just won't shut up.
And three, the fact that he feels his station as such a powerful creature is being disrespected. Again, falls into that mentality that "every other stupid person seems to get I'm invincible, but you morons don't. How many times do I have to keep doing this?" sort of logic.
Oh, there was ONE important thing I forgot to mention that made Boone's Smaug seem more powerful to me. Benedict's Smaug is fiercely protective his treasure, to the point of paranoia and insanity. He did say "I will not part with one coin" after all, in a VERY possessive manner.
This is very different than Boone's Smaug. For starters Smaug actually doesn't take offense at the thought of Bilbo taking some of his treasure, he says that there's "plenty to spare"; so he'd part with a bit of it. He's only enraged when he figures out that Bilbo was working with the Lakeman (who he hates), so then Bilbo taking the treasure was more like "stealing" in Smaug's mind, whereas beforehand Smaug was just going to let him take a handful of it no problem.
I think the reason for this is that in some kind of strange way, Boone's Smaug slightly respected that Bilbo came alone as he did. Who the hell in their right mind goes up to a dragon's lair, alone? The idea of it just amused him, so at that point Smaug's mindset on Bilbo (before he learned who he was affiliated with it) was all like "Hmph, you're either brave, or stupid. Go on and take some gold, just don't be stupid and test my patience."
It's like the attitude where you give a kid a reward despite the fact that he didn't win, just because you're like "well, you tried; here you go." The big difference is that he's not doing out of sympathy, he's just doing it because he's like "Well, you amused me, so go ahead I guess."
I like the way the gold was handled better with Boone Smaug too. Again, Benedict Smaug is paranoid to the point of madness with the gold. And while Boone Smaug his possessive of it too, it seems to be mainly directed toward the Lakemen rather than just a lone thief like Bilbo. Why does this matter so much, you may ask?
Because Boone's Smaug doesn't let the premise of the treasury possess him so much. Let me put it this way, the fact that Benedict Smaug is so territorial of it seems like a very mortal aspect; beings he claims to hate, and be superior to. So in a way, he's contradicting himself through this very human greed, but he doesn't realize it.
With Boone Smaug, it's more about just hating the Lakemen rather than the thought of parting with the gold. The key perspective here is that Boone Smaug says "my treasure", as in he knows it's his; and it's his possession. But with Benedict Smaug, the treasury actually OWNS Smaug; he's a victim of his own desires, and he can't see it.
Then you have Boone Smaug, who knows that the treasury is HIS, not the other way around. Everything there belongs to him, but he doesn't let it control him. I think there's a lot more majesty in that than having him fall prey to his own convictions.

The dragons you see in animation and movies tend to look mostly the same today while way back when this movie was animated the dragons had more of a fantastical approach in literature. They took inspiration from some of the really old dragon and wyrms seen in ancient art. Some of the wyvern art in history can look pretty bizarre. Take in account this picture from the 16th century which is likely from the Middle East. www.harvardartmuseums.org/art/216441 I think the fur and feline appearance came from blending in aspects of oriental dragons with European dragons. The dragon in the Hobbit animated movie was pretty unique in design.

Both Smaugs are fantastic in their own regards, but this Smaug gestures more when he boasts like when he says, "my wings are hurricanes", he actually flaps his wings to prove it. They do a much better job focusing on the parts they should. Also the design for this Smaug is much more unique. Both Richard Boone and Benedict Cumberbatch did brilliant voices for them, though.

I think that this version portrayed Smaug's arrogance, impulsiveness, and how egotistical he was more. When Bilbo came in, he didn't even deem him a threat worthy of his interest. Sure he asked why he was there and what not, but he didn't seem to care about the conversation until it became about him, at which point this part starts, and then once he leaps to the conclusion it's a lake man, he immediately leaves to burn the village down for the intrusion. Personally, I like this one more, but hey.
