    This was from 1972 from the "Demon and Wizards" album....one of my all-time favorite albums. Uriah Heep was an album band rather than a singles band. They didn't have many "hits", but a good one was "That's The Way That It Is" from 1983. That's one you might want to check out.

    In 1974, RUSH opened for Uriah Heep. They were VERY influential influence at that time. Deep Purple formed in 1968. Uriah Heep in 1969. Both in London. Both are considered pioneers of heavy metal, hard & progressive rock. Deep Purple's drummer, Ian Paice, is on the list of all time greatest drummers that no one ever talks about. AMAZING! He's also a lefty, like me.

      Yeah, pioneers for sure. As a wee lad of literally 8 or 9 ('72 or '73), I was given my first two rock albums: Deep Purple - Fireball and UH - Demons and Wizards. I'll always lump the two of them together as they were pretty much my introduction to hard rock and roll. They still stand as classics

    • @AAndromeda-lw7fh
      @AAndromeda-lw7fh Před 7 měsíci +1

      @bobgorman… Correct!! ...Ian Paice is the greatest for me! ...The reason he stays out of the spotlight is probably because he's such a quiet guy. Most of the time, the more scandals someone makes, the more famous they become!! ... Ian Paice NEVER had a scandal, with drugs and the like! ...He still shows outstanding performance today (after 55 years)!!

      @@JimGeigerMusic I'll agree inasmuch as even though I knew they grew a big regional live following early doors, I've always thought, once they got radio attention and a new deal, REO Speedwagon just put out mealy mouthed, middle-of-the-road, "Let's please the label execs, I just bought a house" crap. And it just got worse from there with MTV. *_Ridin' The Storm Out_* is the only song I'm willing to listen to now, and even that kinda sucks. Uriah Heep have a varied song catalogue and could be called (arguably) the first progressive metal band as their first album came out in 1970. Top tracks to check out the wide scope/style of their music: Gypsy (a heavy rocker from their debut album), The Park (a beautiful ballad from their second release, Salisbury), July Morning (an incredible epic from their third album, Look At Yourself), The Wizard (opening track from their fourth and most popular album, Demons And Wizards), Stealin' (probably the band's second most popular song), and Rainbow Demon (a strong deep cut from Demons And Wizards). Those songs are good starting points for the David Byron (vocalist) era of the band.

      @@johnstorton I disagree with Ken's statement big time !!! Now, I will admit that there was nothing that he played that I couldn't. But his style was very fluid and natural (unlike, say Emerson, as his stuff always cramped up my hands, fingers and wrists). But I grew up on Ken, Jon Lord, Wakeman, et al. I just really enjoyed playing his parts, and the snorting Hammond tone was always a blast to crank up !!!

    As mentioned before, UH is often compared to Deep Purple because of similar instrumentation and basically from the same era--heavy sound obtained by the heavy hammond organ playing the same riff as the guitar and sometimes the bass but UH has vocal harmonies--and lead singer Byron a different style. Byron is right up there with other vocalists of the era as far as talent, no back seat to Plant, Gillan, Daltry, better than Ozzie. For a UH vocals showcase do "July Morning" or "Circle of Hands". "Stealin'" is right there too and just general goodness. Lee Kerslake who passed not long ago is another under-rated drummer--he and guitarist Mick Box duel it out in the middle section of "The Magician's Birthday"--an extended track deep cut. Also one of the best rock and roll medleys you'll ever want to hear is on their 1973 live album. Lots of other good tracks as you've seen in the comments.

    Brings back great memories of about 1974 cruising around town with my buddy in his 1967 Mustang convertible and Uriah Heep 8-tracks blasting on the the stereo. I always thought that Uriah Heep was one of the inspirations for the "Spinal Tap" movie.

    I saw them on October 26, 1972 at the Paramount Theatre in Portland, OR. Amazing show! It was Savoy Brown, Miller Anderson, and Uriah Heep. The show started around 7:00 PM and I don't think we got out of there until after 1:00 am. A girl in the audience sat on this big vial of hash oil and broke it. She and her boyfriend started yelling for everyone to get over to them and get some. Freaking epic time. 😎🥴

    An incredibly talented band that fit right into the heavy rock/prog sound I love so much (and is sadly too rare). David Byron had an amazing voice. You can't go wrong with any of their early stuff (thought their newer album Wake the Sleep is incredible). Some hidden gems of theirs are The Pilgrim, Magicians' Birthday, Suicidal Man, High Priestess. So many more to list...

    I saw UH headline at their unfortunate appearance at the Spectrum in 1974. They ended up getting jeered on stage, not because they happened to be in Philadelphia, but because Dave Byron was so wasted that he could barely stand. It was a three act bill… Manfred Mann’s Earth Band opened and they were followed by the Climax Blues Band. Both of these bands performed brilliantly and they were both brought back for encores. By the time that UH hit the stage it was rather late in the evening and Byron was staggeringly drunk. Apparently at the time he had a bit of an alcohol addiction problem and he let his problem adversely impact his performance. It was unfortunate because UH was gaining a fan base because of their hit single “Easy Living.” The band sacked Byron sometime later because of his addiction. What a shame… the guy had some pipes and this band put out a number of very good albums.

    This was one of the first 45s I owned. I was about 12 listening to this on a small record player. Very Lo Fi system but I still loved to listen to this and the other 45s I had including Motorcycle Mama by Sailcat. They were part of a "six pack" of 45s I won from a local radio station. Another in the collection was Woman from Tokyo by Deep Purple. Another classic of the era that brings back memories of playing records in my room pretending to be a DJ. It's been so long I don't remember them all but another was The Fabulous Rhinestones' song "What A Wonderful Thing We Have". Keep up the good work!

    This song is filthy... in the best possible sense. Love the bass sounds of Gary Thain. Sorry, you changed your mind regarding the similarities to Roger Glover, Deep Purple's bassist. I love the melodic bass runs of Deep and Heep. Also, love how you guys listen to many whole albums.... and listening to the entire album Demons and Wizards gives great context for the band and their singles.
