  • Nottingham Forest Football Club and Notts County Football Club are only separated by the river Trent.
They're the closest professional football clubs in England. Notts County are non league (currently National League) whereas Nottingham Forest are in the EFL Championship.
I couldn't come to Nottingham and not mention Brian Clough & Peter Taylor! LEGENDS!!!

I’ve seen County dozens of times over the years despite living in Newcastle. My Dad’s family lived in Notts and my Dad is a boyhood County fan. We also been travelling to a few Notts away games every season for nearly 20 years, including current National League games. The derby games between County and Forest are keenly contested but, as you say, infrequent and not as intense as some. It’s a shame the broken wheelbarrow didn’t get a mention but it was good to see Jimmy Sirrel covered. COYP.

At the beginning of the video you where walking along the towpath of the disused Grantham Canal. It joins the River Trent between the City Ground and Lady Bay Bridge. I understand that plans are being formulated to reopen the canal and make it navigable again. The bridge that you used to walk over to Meadow Lane is called Trent Bridge. I have walked across it many times when going to see Forest play. I have heard that Stoke City is currently the oldest club to be playing in the football league. Stoke City were actually called Stoke Ramblers when originally founded in 1863. The club changed its name to Stoke City in 1878. Forest were originally a Shinty team who then formed an association football team called Nottingham Forest in 1865. This currently makes Forest the oldest club in the EFL.

When I was little boy in short trousers (I'm now 79!) I lived 10 mins walk away from Notts ground. At half time, they used to open the gates so many was the time I watched the second half. At one time, Notts had both Tony Hateley and Jeff Astle in their forward line and whenever they scored fewer than four goals, we felt cheated! The rivalry between Notts and Forest was never that intense because, as you referred in your excellent video, they were always so far apart in Divisions. Forest are now looking forward to Premier League football again, while Notts still languish in non-league. Although I live in Norfolk now, I still return to Nottm to meet my old grammar schoolfriends. In summer we go to Trent Bridge to watch the cricket (usually a 20/20) but in winter it is usually Meadow Lane then ice-hockey in the evening. Cracking video, well done. Sorry you couldn't get into the grounds.

We really don't want any Saudi or Russian oil cash, thanks :)
Forest and Notts have a good relationship. Just watched Forest U23s play at Meadow Lane, where we play quite a lot. We send them quite a few loan players as well. Harry Arter is there now. No animosity necessary, just a good working relationship.

Garry Birtles was one of the best players of Cloughie's Nottingham Forest era, now not mentioned as much as other names. He was purchased from my hometown club called Long Eaton United for £2,000.
Also, as a younger Forest fan and sports journalist I can confirm that Notts County isn't really considered much of a derby game these days. Still a great occasion. Playing Derby County is our main rivalry nowadays. Always had a soft spot for County too, my late grandfather was a fan.

Love these videos.... Iam a chesterfield supporter and we've played Notts County many times... We had a great goalkeeper called Steve cherry who we got from Derby County... Notts County liked him and brought him from us.... Which left us without a 1st choice keeper so what did we do?.... Well we just took Mick Leonard from Notts County.... So we swapped keepers... And what a great servant ML was 👍

    • @davidsphere

He was a gentleman. My mam looked after Mr Clough in the DRI. He never went private. Because of his politics. He didn't want young girls giving him a bed bath. If he had to go through it he preferred nurses his own age, like me mother. When he left he got NIgel, to go out and buy chocolates for the nurses. I know that, because my mother met NIgel near The Spot in Derby and she told him how she looked after his father and he told her how he bought the chocolates. So have respect for Mr Clough. He told us that everything that Forest had should have been Derbys - it was basically most of the main assets of the Derby team he created that gave "Notts"Florist success. He lived in Derby because Derby was in his heart, No matter how much they deny it the "Tree huggers" know I come with the truth. But I have no bitterness towards them, its all friendly banter ...but same cant be said about our chairman Sam L and his battles with Clough ...all this crap we are going through today can be traced back to him and his ego.

And even with Notts County being another team I've had my eye on for a short time too because of their same level of play as Wrexham, I see how that club can really get themselves back up to where they once were.
