At that time, Xu showed a very good combination of traditional backhand and reserve backhand. The traditional backhand gives quick blocks/defence, and the reserve backhand gives top-spin loops.

I think xu xin is better with more push and blocks. In this vid he played so smart and played just like ma lin with better rpb.
His coach told him to get rid of push/block... now he has a new coach
meiyou It's a shame. The push block is harder to counter than a top spin. It send's a fast flat ball with a little backspin from the top spin of the opponent. Jan Ove Waldner mastered that shot.
But in real match I think the rpb block will be much easier because it is like the natural position of you holding the bat, so it would be quicker for you to react and block. As I am using penhold too, I find it hard to integrate blocking to my rpb because switching to blocking makes my left hand side defensive and harder to exert force. Chop block while blocking is nice though
Raymond Chau the only person who mastered rpb block was Wang Hao. rpb block is the most unnatural grip. You really have to push the paddle down with your thumb. push/block is more natural to penholders. I only use rpb for loops and topspin. If you grew up playing push/block it's even harder for you to integrate rpb, which is xu xin's case. Xu grew up using push/block. it was a huge mistake that his coach told him to switch to full rpb.
Raymond Chau xu xin's new coach was ma lin's coach. hopefully he can improve his backhand.

Mortal Kombat level
Xu xin was superb in this game but ma long initially lose.He is not conscious of xu xin's movement and leg work in the game.Ma long got high chances of attack but did not make good use of it.He doesn't attack on time and the ones he attack,he is not aware of his opponent's move.He attacks mostly to the middle of the table.
