The NBA Playoff seedings are unpredictable but the OKC Thunder are definitely one of the more exciting teams to emerge into NBA championship contention this season. While the Thunder are headlined by MVP candidate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as well 2nd year future star Jalen Williams, and Rookie of the Year contender Chet Holmgren, there is another special young player in Oklahoma City and that is Australian hybrid guard Josh Giddey. The OKC Thunder rebuild has already been looking like a huge success under Sam Presti and Mark Daigneault and Giddey is definitely one of the best young pieces that Okc has picked alongside their core of Shai, Jalen Williams, Holmgren, Lu Dort, Cason Wallace, without even including OKC’s stockpile of future draft picks.
After facing a lot of issues early in the NBA season, Josh Giddey is now emerging in his 3rd season as part of the Thunder. The question is, can he be part of the OKC Thunder’s core for the long haul? In the playoffs, OKC will be matched up against Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets, Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves, Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks, or even Kevin Durant and the Phoenix Suns, and also possibly LeBron and the Lakers. Can this young Oklahoma City Thunder squad go far in the NBA postseason?.

IMO they need to focus on 3 & D players... If we could trade Giddy for a player that is more athletic better defender and shooter we would be better off, Focus on keeping Wallace, Wiggins, and Joe as they are perfect fill-ins for SGA/Jdub/Dort. However Giddy at this point isn't really needed and a Jeremy Grant type of 4 is what we need, Lauri would be a dream acquire but not realistic, Dieng developing more would be perfect no trade however I would like to see Presti do some voodoo and get Bobby Portis

Let’s be honest, at the start of the season, he was facing potential criminal charges and constant booing from opposition fans. Now that is over, his play is improving. The talk about getting rid of him is coming from fans and media types, but okc have kept the faith and still given him game time. I’d suggest he is still in their plans going forward.

I really think he's a talented player, he fits the Sam Presti type because he is multi-skilled. The numbers after 3/1/24 are very encouraging. I think for Josh Giddey to take the next step his deep shots need to improve. As long as he puts in the work I think he can get there. I hope OKC keeps him long term.

Because Giddy entered the NBA younger than most, people tend to forget that he is actually younger than Jalen and Chet.
But about a month ago when all the NBA commentators and CZcams people were obsessed with OKC not rebounding well, everyone just wanted to pretend like 21 year old Josh Giddy and Chet Holmgren were at the peak of their NBA careers and couldn't possibly get better at rebounding without the Thunder making a big trade for a traditional big... (meanwhile the Thunder were literally the #1 seed in the West when this was going on)
The last 10 years of NBA media coverage has been obsessed with making trade though. But NBA teams can get better without changing any players at all. Especially if those players are 21 years old. Especially when your team payed out a large amount of money to get the best shooting coach in the NBA.
Trades get you the 2023/2024 Suns...
Developing talent gets you the 2014-2016 Warriors...

Fans were frustrated with him early in the season and I know he lacked confidence for reasons both on and off the court. The Thunder recognized this and I truly believe that one reason Hayward was brought to OKC was to mentor him and overcome these challenges. This is why we have seen big improvements since Hayward arrived. I personally believe he is an incredible talent and the team knows how valuable he is to their success long term.

His attack at the rim and ability to draw contact and the foul has gone up massively recently as well. '

  • @larrylindgren9484
    @larrylindgren9484 Před měsícem +12

You can't teach what he does passing. You have it or you don't. He can be magical at times. He's a tall guard. He doesn't need to fix that funky release. It's starts to low and is almost a windup. It gives defenders a chance to pest his shot when they shouldn't be able to. He's a better defender than he's given credit for. If SGA was a shooting guard and not a guard who needs the ball to effect game Giddey could easy lead the NBA in assists. You see passes from him that are just special. Most PGs can't do a bounce pass to save their lives. Giddey does it with ease. He's tall so the skip pass is easy for him. He really doesn't turn it over. He's special with the ball in his hands. He's OKC's best player with the ball. Sadly, he has to be a catch and shoot player. Those are not his strengths. Over the past month or so they've been letting him run the offense a bit and his numbers have gone up at that exact time. Not shocking really. They are letting him play to his strengths not his weakness which is a catch and shoot. It's like the Lakers trying to make Russ a catch and shoot player it's failed. You put Giddey in Boston running the point oh my God. It's all Boston needs really. Most of their very talented score can't handle the ball to save their lives. It's why they lost to GS. You pressure them they turn it over a lot.

Thanks for making this video! The narrative seems that OKC is winning despite him still starting (even with his minutes down) but in reality he still contributes to winning. It‘s as clear as the quote you mentioned here. He was overthinking everything and questioning his abilities and his fit. Let’s face it, the allegations at the beginning were ripping his confidence and in march he found his mojo again accepting what he is and just doing this.
One thing I always noticed about his inside finishing:
He picks his dribble up to early and jumps from too far. He has very little lift to his game and I compare his physical tools to Dirks. Not his game or talent but his ability to attack and finish. At 8:10 you can see him taking an extra dribble to get closer to the rim and is able to finish while using the rim to protect the ball. That’s the key for him as well as adding counter moves when attacking. Counters should be his next priority as he always seems to go for a layup and basically never stops, makes a fake and finishes after letting the defender fly. He is to predictable when just going for a drive and picking the ball up to early for a layup. Now he goes the whole way to the rim more often. If he uses his floater more often, he can fill the gap between closer rim finishes and a few steps outside very well.
To see that he improved his midrange game is excellent and will help him taking that the defender takes him honest in the midrange AND on his drives.
I was and still are skeptical about his fit but when he plays with confidence his shot starts to fall and then everything opens up for him.
Heck he is still 21 and what he had to deal with early in the season was brutal and he will be booed again in the playoffs.
I’m glad he had the season finish he just had just for the sake of getting his mojo back and trust himself again. He truely is a special talent and one of the best passers in the league.
The defensive end is still a different story since at 6‘9“ he has to guard more of 3s and 4s and is physically overmatched when not playing with confidence. He should be more physical and embrace contact defensively more often.
Don’t underestimate his basketball IQ. He can still lift this team going forward and that basically everyone doubted him the whole season and made him the primary trade bait didn’t fit well with me, given the perspective of the whole allegation thing. The whole allegation thing wasn’t talked about enough in terms of impact on his confidence and state of mindset. Aside from him maybe only Dillon Brooks had rougher road games over the course of the season and that made this whole season extremely difficult to handle for him.
The fact that they are tied for the #1 seed after 81 games should also be credited to him and not only Shai, Dub and Chet.
What’s more concerning to me is the fact that OKC seems to have a real gem and imo long term fit in the savior of basketball in Aaron Wiggins while dumping Tre Mann, Micic and more for Hayward who is not impacting the game at all like Wigs does.
Trust this guys despite the narrative that they are too young. Like Presti said, progress is not linear and what Josh had and still has to deal with mentally forged him into a way better player now and that should be respected, even by the Thunder fanbase who were distancing from him early on with the allegations beginning the season.
Can’t wait for the playoffs and hope that everyone stays healthy throughout the final Dallas game!
Presti also said when they get back into the playoffs, they don’t want to be there for an appearance but to arrive and that just happens right now. What a fantastic season, wow!
PS: what were the odds that Chet actually played every game so far this year!? That was a HUGE win for this team.

2 , remember when Carmelo at Portland I think 2 years back went 9for9 .s.w.i.s.h.e.s. for his shooting , I think he may have had 2 put backs using glass or a lay-up and a put-back so let's call in seven for seven at 100%
This will never be achieved ever again because there is an in-built handicap and restriction when you get a hot-hand and heat-check Kobe level difficulty and defences throw many bodies at you . Remember , we are talking swishes/splashes from 18-24 feet ...
    Re:Giddey , yeah yeah yeah I am listening . Re:J-Gidd , have you seen Carmelo's tutorial on the pick-up . 150% intensity rip-the-ball-up-,into-the-shooting-picket-like-James-Harden-ripping-thru-defenders-armspace-to-attempt-to-draw-the-foul ...
J-Gidd at 6'9" shooting pocket2shoulder not as nimble not as light not as twitchy
So work on his legs , and work on his pre shooting launch/shooting pocket ...

Still don’t think he’ll be around long term. They’re gonna have to prioritize JDub and Chet extensions. And the year after extensions start for them is when a new SGA contract would start. And he’s gonna get paid A LOT. So there’s no way they’ll be able to afford to extend him. I’d consider trying to trade him for somebody that potentially fits along the big 3 better while they’re still cheap.

I sincerely hope he will be. He's a talented young player who is far too young to give up on. Let's not forget, Kobe Bryant wasn't a 20 PPG scorer until year 4. Steve Nash didn't break out until year 6, and Kyle Lowry wasn't an all-star until he was 29. We want everything microwaved with overnight free shipping these days -- our NBA landscape is very impatient. Players need time to develop, especially if they're dealing with personal issues.
As for the issue of him sleeping with a 17 year old, the age of consent in Oklahoma is 16. And, as I understand, he met her at a club where she used a fake ID to get in.
On top of that, Australia's age of consent is also 16, so even if he did know her age, he likely saw nothing morally sketchy with it in the same way that Americans view sleeping with a woman who's 18. After all, there are plenty of American celebrities who are beloved who've done FAR worse...

Okc seems to invest large amts of time in his development.
Currently, costs 7 million. So josh fits the moneyball budget.
    Hayward 33 million doesn't.

Personally I see the Thunder looking to move on from him this off-season.
And I think that there is a real possibility that they will think they are getting good value for him at the time of the trade, AND the other team will have an opportunity to make it look like a steal in the long run.
In general I have always thought that the criticism of Giddeys general play has been too harsh, but at the same time that his point guard skills have been overrated - specifically his ball handling (yes he is still young and he’s tall which probably doesn’t help either), even on the Boomers this most recent FIBA tournament I thought he was in the wrong role and simply being asked to do too much.

Gifdy play didn't do anything wrong. He's got a little bit better he just got squeezed out by the absolute rise of j-dub. I think the thunder should trade him in the offseason cuz they can't pay him long term because they've got to pay check and jdub next summer. I need to ship him out for a power forward which is what they need a 6-96-10. Power forward who can run the baseline or hit a good solid 15 ft jump shot. Giddy ends up being the team rebound leader about 40 50% of the time because they have to have somebody go get the rebounds. In the last 2 weeks with jdub or SGA out or both giddy has really stepped up and showed what kind of potential he has this is just not his team. He's a good player he's a good teammate just not for this bunch. Because J Williams has crazy long term potential and is a better compliment to sga. And a killer defender
