    ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
    The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. 4:06 What a bizarre argument. It was American intervention that was a huge cause of the migrant crisis. American intervention destroying the economies of Latin America, installing right-wing governments to systematically strip mine the social safety net, labor rights, and natural resources of those countries or instigating guerilla wars against left-wing governments, etc. is the reason why people fled to America. Not because they wanted to; because they had no other choice.
    It's like arguing that the British Empire was good because countless Indians, Africans, Carribeans, and other peoples sought to immigrate to the UK during and immediately after imperial rule. Yeah, it was the best of their options (for those who could afford it; a very small minority) because their home countries were left in decrepit conditions by colonialism. Or arguing that Israel can't possibly be an arpatheid state because even the displaced Palestinians want a right of return to come back even if it means living under Israeli rule. Yeah genius, they had their generational wealth and their ties to their homeland illegally stripped from them, no wonder they want it back.

    1812 America invaded Candida to take land and the expansion west was definitely for land, after all America at is founding was only 13 small colonies

    • @thomassenbart
      @thomassenbart Před 6 měsíci +6

      You need to review your history. the War of 1812 happened due to incessant British interventions against Americans, and Britain's failure to follow the Treaty of Paris in 1783, i.e., not dismantling their forts in American territory, selling weapons to the Indians, capturing American seamen and forcing them into service on British vessels, etc... The war came about because of these issues and the invasion of Canada was to defeat the nearest British on hand.
      The expansion West was first in the lands gained at the end of the American Revolution, then into those purchased from Napoleon in 1803, then after a border dispute with Mexico, which led to a victorious war with that nation and the ceding of much of the rest of the lower 48, then the Gadsden Purchase from Mexico and the settlement with Britain over Oregon and Canada. The Spanish American war gave us territories, such as Puerto Rico, Saipan, the Philippines (independent 1946) Guam, Guantanamo Bay, as the rest of Cuba was simply liberated. Alaska was purchased from Russia and Hawaii was taken by American businessmen.
      That is the actual history. Also, the 13 colonies were not small, look at the actual geography, especially after the war.

    “In every single war that America has fought, we have never asked for land afterwards, except for enough to bury the Americans who gave the ultimate sacrifice for that freedom we went in for.” This was a line from a prepared speech, not an off-the-cuff comment, and it is totally false. Our history was built on the bodies of people who were in the way of US expansionism and colonization. It's a shame so many people in 2023 just make up stuff when so much factual information is available at our fingertips. Take a few minutes to do your own fact-checking and research. You'll be better for it.
    1. American Revolution (1775-1783) In 1783 the United States received a huge territory from Great Britain as part of the peace treaty ending the revolutionary war. This new region stretched from the Appalachian Mountains to the Mississippi River, and from Canada to Spanish Florida.
    2.Indian Wars (approx. 1817-1898) 1.844 billion acres leaving approximately 56 million acres of land that are held in trust by the United States for various Native American tribes and individuals.
    3. Mexican War (1846-1848) Mexico ceded 55 percent of its territory, including the present-day states California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, most of Arizona and Colorado, and parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, and Wyoming
    4. Spanish-American War (1898-1902) U.S. victory in the war produced a peace treaty that compelled the Spanish to relinquish claims on Cuba, and to cede sovereignty over Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines to the United States.
    "Throughout much of its history, the United States has subscribed to expansionism. What does expansionism mean? The expansionism definition regarding US history refers to the policies and practices of invading foreign lands to expand territory, political influence, or ideology. American expansionism can be traced back to the very earliest moments of English settlement on the coasts of America. These colonists hoped to expand their control inward and waged wars against Native Americans to do so. After the United States achieved its independence from Britain, America expanded westward through military conquest and the purchase of colonial territories. Even after reaching the Pacific Coast, the United States looked to other new territories: most prominently the Caribbean and the Pacific, during and after the 1890s. After the Second World War, the United States abandoned annexing new territories and exited colonies such as the Philippines. However, the establishment of US military bases worldwide and the continued US interventions abroad can still be characterized as expansionism." -- Joseph Cataliotti, Jason McCollom
