I worked with a woman who was the sister-in-law to one of the original flatmates that lived with Diana in London at the time of her engagement to Charles. Then flatmate was such a good friend, though, that she never revealed anything about Diana, even after her death, to her sister-in-law.

They learned from "Diana's dress", it seems. David Emmanuel and Elizabeth Emmanuel were announced as the designers to create Lady Diana's wedding dress; and how they were surrounded by reporters trying to catch a glimpse, or making a deduction... Funny stories now, but stressful for them back then most likely.

These fashion rules were followed under Queen Elizabeth, but they could change. I think the fascinator, in place of a full hat, is something relatively new that seems to be well accepted even if it's not much more than a hairband and feather. As well, white gloves don't seem to be that common any more, except when they're long with ballgowns or at a formal daytime event.

  • @firechick561

Love your channel! As far as the custom of royal women wearing hats for formal occasions, my guess would be it stems from the New Testament . The Apostle Paul spoke about the symbolic differences between men & women in their dress. Women were to wear a head covering in church services or ministering in service, as a sign of submission to the men in church leadership. Because the Monarch is the head of the Church of England, it would not be a stretch to suggest royal women/nobility honor this custom by the wearing of hats at events where the distinction of leadership roles have been passed down thru the centuries of traditions of the Church. Years ago, I attended worship services with a friend whose family ( called the Plymouth Brethren by some) honored this custom by the women wearing a hat or a veil when praying in these meetings. My friend sincerely loved the Lord, & bc she had left her had behind, she covered her head while bowing her head to pray by placing her palm on her forehead and the rest of her hand over her head. She was honoring the custom set down in the Scriptures by showing the distinction between men & women in leadership roles.

The key thing about the short pants (a.k.a. shorts) for all upper class & royal boys is that they're commonly worn by children all year round, not just in summer and warm climates. They'll wear them with thick knee socks and sweaters in winter but won't switch to long pants until they're old enough. Maybe because they're always seen as being at play indoors and out until they reach school age. In Bermuda the shorts are national dress for adult men, but they still wear them with jacket and tie for business attire.

The ‘don’t remove coat’ rule must be tough during menopause. When I get a hot flash, I want to take off everything (but don’t), it’s like walking into a 125F sauna. Now, I always wear a silk tank or tee under sweaters, so I’ll be covered when, inevitably, I have to take them off for a few minutes. My father grew up in Europe before and during WWII, and boys didn’t wear long trousers, in any weather, until age 12. When a new Supreme Court Justice was sworn in about 10 years ago, his little boy’s formal suit had shorts, not long trousers, he was adorable. It’s still standard here in the US for formal occasions, too, boy’s suits have short pants. Great video.

Another highly informative vlog, Julie! I am surprised, though, that you didn't mention the weighted hem to prevent the skirt hem from flying up in a gust of wind (à la Marilyn Monroe in "The Seven Year Itch").

Silk is a natural fabric since it is natural, like you said it absorbs moisture . Polyester being synthetic doesn''t absorb moisture so your hair will stick to it and smash down when you wear a hat lined It (hat hair) doesn't give you "Hat hair" or smashed funny hair when you wear one. That is why the best hats are lined with 100% silk or 100% cotton.

I've just remembered another rule which concerns the shade of lipstick that can be worn. Bright, red lipstick I believe is a no go, a bit like nail polish.

Another reason for the short trouser rule could be that all small boys wore them until the late 60's if not longer. My brother hated hated hated them but was told by mother that trousers were expensive (which they were back then comparatively eg I bought a very expensive coat in 1976 for £20 and toaday that's still what a lot of coats cost I digress...) and that little boys would put holes in them while playing. Which is precisely what he did the first day he wore his long awaited long trousers. Gosh I am boring sorry. So basically royal boys trousers are a throwback to when material was expensive and treasured by all.

My aunt went to a centurion birthday party the theme of the party was big hats she had trouble seeing out from under the hat. So I suggested tilting the hat to one side, it worked she wasn’t keen on hats to begin with. I thought she looked good in it, oh well😊

The hat rule comes from the tradition of women 'covering their heads' in church - which came from an interpretation of 1 Cor 11:2-16 in the New Testament. Men, alternatively, were supposed to take OFF their hats when entering a building.
