- Recent modifications just completed on the R143 car class have made the fleet compatible with the R160 cars. Here we see the first such instance where a mixed train of R143 and R160 cars ran in passenger service on the J line. Enjoy this very rare look at a highly unusual consist arrangement!

Tip for everyone! If u’re going to be riding a mixed set to the last stop, get on the R143. MTA decided to use Kathleen Campion’s Next and Last Stop announcement on all R160s, but kept them on the R143s.
EDIT: The R143 is now also reprogrammed to use Campion’s version 😢
Good idea, but everyone who normally rides r143 and sees a r160 in the mix are gonna dash into the r160. If it's people like you and me who normally ride R160's then we'd dash for the r143
@@Penske_Penguin Dash for the R160 on the L? No, Penske! The Next and Last Stop announcement on the R143 has been since 2001 and that’s how I’ve been hearing it riding the J and L! It’s nostalgic! It was recorded in 2001! The replaced R160 announcement only belongs on the A, C, and two shuttles out of Manhattan
Train is train
Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the video. I did not know different classes of train could work together.
on the dc metro the 1-6000s are all compatible
Ok this is cursed...but cool at the same time! I never thought they would be that fully compatible that they would run them in revenue service!
If the equipment is able to run together, it runs together!
I want the r143 to have the storm doors retrofitted so it has two doors instead of one
@@boiii3productions945Frr
Gets me thinking of the R40M/R42 sets that were running all over B Division circa '08-'09. At one point I thought I saw more of those on the R than I saw R46s. Now we get to see what a NTT mixed set would be like.
Never been on the J line but salute the MTA for modifications making these compatible
Thanks DJHammers
7:43 the propulsion change was so quick, smooth, and awesome!!!
Awesome! Just like the mixed redbirds trains on the 1, 2 & 3 trains in the 1980s
That type of consist is being used on the ToMC in real life and Rainbow Subway in Roblox.
We need more of these
This reminds me of Chicago’s CTA “L” system running mixed consists of 2600 and 3200 series cars on the blue and brown lines. As many people pointed out, the Washington DC metro also ran multiple series of train cars together at one point. I never knew MTA NYC’s R143 and R160 cars could operate this way!
Make me feel so inspired
I never thought this would happen!!!!
Honestly this is kinda like how the DC Metro operated its trains back when 1000, 4000, and 5000 series were still in service
It created severe wear and tear on the equipment. A hidden factor to why the 4000 and 5000 series trains are retired.
@@maiki5962 Yea in my opinion the 4000 and 5000 cars were retired abit early but it mostly because the 1000's ruined their electrical systems.
@@BronXLimited Like jeez. Y'know that warning on every battery? Never mix old and new batteries together. Same with train cars.
@@maiki5962 ah, so that’s why the 5000 series ended up having a shortened lifespan (the 5000 series were built between 2001-2004)
@@VinceHere98 The 5000 series trains were the slowest at acceleration and braking at 2.5 mph/s. 1000 series were fastest at 3 mph/s. Not to mention that before the 7000 series came into service, the 1000 series cars were the heaviest. Anything mixed with 1000 series train cars would be worn out. It was stupid for them to mix the trains in the first place. The reason 1000 series were prone to telescope during head on collisions is because they never had nor were retrofitted with anti-climbers. The rest of the fleet have them.
This is cool.
I thought it wasn’t possible lol or maybe it was, but they were too scared that it’ll mess up the electronics; it definitely sounds weird 😆
No it’s definetely possible as you can see, it’s just that they have different braking systems so it’s not ideal for it to run in passenger use. Same with the R160A and R160B Siemens i believe
It’s common for something similar to this on the Boston green line. Type-7s and 8s are compatible with each other, the type 7 has no propulsion sound while the type 8 has the same motor as the r143 and because of that is louder than the type 7. In this case both have propulsion sounds creating a weird but beautiful noise.
R143 And R160 Together Are Rare. Imaging Hearing The R143 And R179 Together. Plus The R160 And R179.
Imagin 2 cars r160 other 2 r143 lol
That would be bad because the r179 has the infamous delay in the announcements where as the r160 does not and the r160 has the same next stop voice as the r143 and r160 Used to have the same next and last stop announcement as r143 until now. R179 and R211 has Kathleen campion for both next and last stop announcements
Little Girl R179 is incompatible with her older sisters. She’s in a class by herself. And she and her baby sisters, R211A, R211S and R211T are also incompatible with each other. But hopefully one day they’ll be compatible with each other.
R143 and 179 are literally impossible to operate together
@@jaydottt_transitfanner I said that.
Cool
EARS OVERLOADED: not from being overly loud, but trying to sort out how ONIX and MITRAC sounds play at the same time! What's next: MITRAC VS SITRAC or R143 MITRAC VS R179 MITRAC?
This is something unique hopefully this can go on the M Train in the future
Can't. The M can only use R160s because the R143s isn't compatible with the CBTC on the QBL.
@@MrProjectArchfiends is it compatible it’s the L CBTC that needs to be upgraded
We did it bois! the R143-R160 mix is OFICIALLY Canon! now we just gotta hope that the R142-R142A mix would work someday
This can -definitely- happen on the (4) line
_Edit: it may happen as both r142 and r160 have same propulsion, and both r142a and r143 have same propulsion_
@@boiii3productions945 not definitely as the R142 and R142A are very different in terms of mechanics it would cause a lot of bucking
@@boiii3productions945 And alot of issues similar to what happend to the Wasington Merto 4000 and 5000 series cars being coupled with older cars like the 1000's or 2000's.
@@jaydottt_transitfanner I heard someone say it already happened on the 6 back in 2001, but maybe it was too dangerous
Good point but for the R142A the only working combination is R142A R188 this is seen on the 7 train with R142A 7211-7590 combined with R188 7811-7936.
I always wanted to hear what a R143/R160 propulsion sounds like
Kawasaki and Alstom use similar electrical wires and nearly the same brake pressure on both the R143 and R160 hence why R160A and B can be coupled. (The R160B was made by Kawasaki and R160A was by Alstom but both R160 units use the same things aside from the propulsion.)
Both the r160b and the r160a use the exact same propulsion, Alstom ONIX. Only select R160Bs (8843-9102) have a different propulsion (Siemens SITRAC)
And what about the r179?
@@irinaxeno5961 As we know the R179 was built by the now defunct Bombardier now owned by Alstom. Bombardier uses a different Electrical Components same thing with the R142, So to shorten things up, they aren't.
@@boiii3productions945 Yes Some R160B's were retrofitted with Siemens SITRAC propulsions they kinda could of retrofitted some R143's with the Siemens Propulsion but I feel like they should just keep the Bombardier 1508C propulsion on them.
@@BronXLimited Alstom bought Bombardier! It’s now Alstom vs Kawasaki!
Pay attention to the railcar numbers because it was the Redbirds back in the 1980’s serving those letter lines only 8 cars j.m.z. Lines
I heard that today thought I was bugging but didn’t really think to much of it. That’s when I was walking under the train
Amazing to hear both different propulsions.
Edit: spelling error
*propulsions
@@jaydottt_transitfanner I'mma mix you with an R46 if you don't stop being smart, correcting people online. Lol jk
1:40 Run run run
I know I can't be the only one who thought the first couple seconds was a Siemens 😂
7:43 the official r143 siemens set, as well it kinda still sounds like its old motors
Imagine R143 and R160 mixed consist on the L line
Imagine I kid entering the station and seeing this, he’d be like:
“Mom why is the front train have flag on the top and the rear train have the flag underneath it?”
that propulsion messed with me on a level beyond your understanding
I like the combo of Alstom R160A-1 or 2 cars with Siemens R160B car
Bombardier Mitrac and Alstom Onix together Wow.
This is what you would hear if an R142 car is mixed with an R142A car.
Will this become a regular occurrence from now on?
Is there a lot of them or just one?
Imagine an R143 paired with an R160 Siemens.
They did that already with a Siemens and Alstom on the R. There are no 4 car Siemens in the system
It like an R142 and R142A together
If it was R160B with R143 it might of sounded like old R143 Siemens
Good lord almighty!
Can a 160 and 179 run together like this?
damn
Maybe in the future, the R179s will get the same treatment
Fr
What if the R211 was made to be compatible with the R160 and we end up seeing R211 and R160A-2 operating in a mixed consist in the future?
Itll just look bizarre, so no.
R211s are too technologically advanced to be coupled with the older fleet.
They can be depending on what Tech Alstom uses but I'm sure they will but the R143 and R160's were made in nearly the same period of time but it would be cool to see an R160 with an R211.
Most likely no.
@@fiercingdragon I agree with you. Like would you want to experience the rough and highly unstable ride with an R160B Siemens-R46 mix?
Imagine if the R160 could be coupled with the R160B
It has happened a few times.
Which type R160A-1 4 car set or R160A-2 the 5-car set? R160A-2 with R160B Alstom R160B Siemens tends to be done on E,F,N,Q,R & W trains
@@EpicThe112 well the N, Q, and W don't use R160s anymore due to the fleet swap wiith Jamaica Yard for R46s.
J was hauling into bowery
Imagine if they also do it on the L line
Won't be surprised if they did . Same yard and all
I mean it could be possible?
The r160 in question would have to be CBTC compatible. I’m pretty sure the MTA would have one that is and it will work
@@boiii3productions945 Those are the East New York Yard Units 8313-8376. Also the M train since it also uses Siemens CBTC like the L train from 71st ave Forrest Hills to 5th ave 53rd st via 51st street IRT East Side Line station.
Is r143 and eny r160 cbtc compatible with queens blvd cbtc
No
@@jadenmuniz8817 but the mta is working on it
@@alexthemtaandr211weatherfa2 R u sure there’s gonna be two CBTCs on the same car? I think u just want to see an R143 M train. So what u’re saying is the R143 and all 4-car R160s can serve the J/Z, L, and M and u can see mixed sets on all these lines?
You think this is shocking! Wait until you see the r160-r179 mixed set in revenue service
Highly doubt that will work
I guess this proves Nothing is impossible
4:58
This is just cursed.
I'm making 3d model of R68 subway car, and I can not find proper details... on cars, are all cars r68 are like running cars not like dummy wagon... so every car has cab for driver. found out that r68 has 1 full cab and half cab. Doors in drivers cab they sliding doors? door in half cab also sliding? in full cab there is 2 doors into the car where passengers and another door outside the car... is the interior door also sliding door, what about in cab doors are they usually doors or sliding. if anyone can help. thanks.
So basically it's complicated but I'll try to explain my best. if you're talking about the *SLIDING DOOR* *on the full cab* , that is *NOT* an *R68* , that is an *R68A* . I know, they look similar, but they are two different trains built by different companies. The *R68* however has a cab door that opens inward, like when you're opening the cab door from the passengers area, it pushes inward like a normal house door. *R68* car numbers are from 2500- 2925. *R68A* car numbers are from 5001-5200. The *R68* has a darker lighting and *R68A* is lighter.
On *both* trains, the half cab is a pull opening door, again, a normal house door.
@@jaydottt_transitfanner So they look similar from outside, but different from inside. So ok i will make r68A so it has sliding doors from full cab and from halfcab? fillcab has sliding doors - outside and inside the car am i right?
@@DimaLegoFUN you're correct but keep in mind that I said the HALF cab doesn't have a sliding door on BOTH of the trains is just a normal house door with the HALF cab
@@jaydottt_transitfanner ok thx for info
Now let's do a 143 and 179 together.
Not gonna happen with their differing brake pressures
R179s are too fast.
@@maiki5962 no they aren't
@@this51man Ever seen them being tested on the Eighth Avenue Express?
@@maiki5962 I've OPERATED them there and in the Rockaway flats. Hardly any faster than the 160s, but brake a lot better than them
there is r143 and another one is r160
Next up: R142/R142A mix.
They did that back in the early 2000’s. Long story short, it wasn’t a success
@@fh4709 electrical problems?
I don’t remember.
@@justinm.1 The 142a Acceleration is faster the the 142 so it would drag/push it when it service
Does this still happen often?
It never should have happened in the first place. These trains are NOT actually compatible. It should have never left the yard.
@metropod I mean, you have a point. But the technology and software is the same no?
@@metropoduhm they clearly are compatible did you watch the video?
wonder if they will run on the M someday
No. The M needs R160s due to Queens Boulevard CBTC. The R143s have Canarsie CBTC.
@@jadenmuniz8817 i don’t think it matters a set of r143s have run on qbl before
Maybe, the problem is R143 were completely displaced from the M, and it only runs R160. So unlikely for the M, but maybe likely on the L
@@nyc_silver That was b4 Queens Boulevard CBTC!
@@Dezlite Unlikely? Impossible! There’s CBTC equipment on Queens Boulevard that’s only compatible with R160s (excluding 8313-8376 which also has Canarsie CBTC for the L)

She’s gorgeous. Hope she’s more common. And that’s why they tested both girls together as one. Ik both girls are happy asf.

Like Z service suspension
Forget negative thoughts
