Hurricane Salvaged Outboard Boat Motor. 2021 Suzuki 150. WILL IT TURN?

  • Back again! Check out my first attempts to get this hurricane damaged motor freed up. I bid on this boat knowing the motor was "locked." Being such a new motor, how bad could it be!? Lets find out...
I bought this boat from Cooper Capital Specialty Salvage. It was wrecked in Hurricane Ian and sat for months before I placed a bid to rescue her!

Hi Carl. You may get the motor running but your largest struggle will probably be to make it a reliable outboard.
The crankshaft, bearings, cylinder walls, pistons may be rusted and pitted. If so then this motor will experience premature wear. If you are committed and get the motor running then I recommend to do a full teardown, inspect all parts and have all pitted parts resurfaced by a reputable machine shop.
Anyway, my next steps would be to check if the motor has spark and then clean the fuel system and replace all serviceable parts.
Before you sink any money in the motor I strongly recommend you to do a cost calculation to see what it may cost to get this one running again and compare that by getting a good running used motor.
My guess is that buying a used motor is your best bet from a financial point of view but it will not make for great CZcams content. Lol
Good luck. Look forward to the next video.
    Steve.

I agree, the rust coming out of the cylinders and the fact the engine was stuck tells me there is internal corrosion. This engine may run but over long term it will fail prematurely.

  • @omcbob37
    @omcbob37 Před rokem +7

With that amount of sand and rust that came out of the cylinders, the crankcase is certainly full of crap as well. You need to do a total teardown and clean or replace any damaged/rusted parts. Crying shame for a motor with only 21 hours on it. Good luck with it. Keep posting videos on your progress.

If you already have the spark plugs out get a transmission funnel and some ATF and dump it on top of the pistons let it cook for a couple days then blow it out again by turning it over. Looking good so far

There is one thing you have to get straight from the start and that is knowing what the word BOAT stands for = BREAK OUT ANOTHER THOUSAND. 😂 Sad but true. Can’t wait to follow your journey! Don’t forget to polish your fuel before you get to far that way you’ll know if your tank is contaminated. HI, Its great that you are trying to get this up and running. 20+ hours gives you opportuinty.
You may want to consider sending it to a Suzuki technician to to strip down and Clean out? think of all the time experimenting? Not to mention the EPA disaster spewing gas on you driveway?
It IS a good motor so why not get it properly refurb? I would wuggest focus on the Boat repairs while an expert fixes up the motor?
A good teardown refurb for a couple grand may give you years of a great motor? Just saying? Not hating.

Guessing you have deep pockets! Love that you're a DIYer too. I have to do the same as most of my maintenance would far exceed my limited budget. Marine shops will tell you that it's not worth the cost and Oh by the way check out this new Suzuki over here for $18000. Good luck with it. I'm thinking you're gonna have to buy the manual and scour CZcams for how to videos. I'm a graduate of CZcams University myself... Probably the best thing will be to pull the power head and tear it down so you can get the rest of that crap out of the motor. Deep Creep all of the electrical connections as well. Are you in Texas?

The lower cowlings come off with 4-5 5/16 screws. Makes cleaning and working on it much easier. Soak those cylinders with atf or marvel mystery, don’t flush with straight gas anymore…. not enough lube ….mix it up with some used oil if you have some. Flush the crankcase a few times as well.

Hey you need to probably change that hydraulic fluid in that trim ram it’s probably got stuff in it also you need to pull all the electrical plugs on the motor and spray them with a electrical water displacement spray and clean them off and plug them back in and I would pull the plug on the lower unit drain all that lower unit and depending what comes out if water got in and it looks bad I’d probably pull the lower unit and clean all that out good the faster the water gets out of all that the better you are and I see alot of outboard motor techs use just regular wd-40 to spray electrical and everything some of that other stuff gets expensive but definitely change that fluid in that trim before jacking it up and down a bunch if that fluids bad it will burn that pump up on your trim hope this helps

If this was me, I would have taken the power head off, and spent the needed money to give it a full rebuild, most likely will only need new end shells, piston rings and a complete seal gasket set, but by doing what your doing IE: turning it over you probably damaged the boars and pistons, and maybe the crank journals, I could do a full rebuild for my self for under £1k, where if you damage the rest of it your looking at 3-5 times that.

No telling what she went through during hurricane Ian. My investigations lead me to believe she was washed off a boat lift. The barnacle growth was all below the power head. She must have sat half submerged for a month or two before hauled to the salvage yard. And then sat there for another two months before I won the bid to be her savior.
