We used to put the 9.9 cover decals on 15 hp motors, forty-something years ago.
That’s another way to go! 👍
We used to do that with a 6hp Mercury cover on a 15hp Mercury, just to fool the police, my little Zodiac Cadet 310 used to go over 50kph with that 15hp Mercury, the whole boat and motor combination weighed like 90kg with a full 24 liter tank.

Try putting the original control module in and test the speed and acceleration just by removing the air restrictor.
? ? ? Will it run a little bit better or a little worse or alot worse?.
Manufactures used to put 9.9 carbs on the 15's to meet the 9.9 rule when it first came out. I have a Gamefisher like that.
@@BobWiersema Yep, and guys would do a carb conversion on them.
That's a serious restrictor plate, heck it can hardly breathe.
Haha! It certainly is!!
Nothing more gratifying than doing something yourself to save money.
You got that right Tom!!
Nice demonstration and glad you took it out on the water too. Didn't even know you could do that. Appreciate you sharing the knowledge.
Yeah, it was easier than I thought it would be. Thanks for watching!!
Little soapy water as a lubricant helps sliding things with rubber gaskets or mounting surfaces in place a lot easier
Thanks! I appreciate that tip!
Windex is great for that, it dries nicely.
Really don't want to get water near a ECM or the connector. Silicone lube spray would be better.
@@SynicalBeats not really as silicone spray stays slippery, where as windex and/or soapy water dry. Thus the rubber still offers support via friction. In most cases like this I use Saliva (yes I spit on it 🙂)
That’s awesome! Never knew you could do that. Looks pretty easy.
Yeah, it wasn't hard at all!
I just came across your video. It’s straight forward no bs and informative. Keep up the good work
Thank you! I appreciate that! 👍
Nice upgrade. Great demo video, Kyle.
Thanks! It was fairly easy to do!
There is no need for a new ECU, I did this same conversion and by the advice of a Suzuki tech he said the stock ECU would adjust to the added airflow and it did, runs great.
Only parts you need are the flame arrestor on seal
Glad to know that is working for you!
@1224Peterson Still no problems? I’m thinking about doing this but the ECU is really expensive.
@@kitkat101 Running like a dream!
@@kitkat101 No issues, I've been checking the spark plugs and they look good, no signs of running too rich or too lean so the ECU is doing it's job. You will need a new prop tho, I got an 11 pitch, the stock prop on these are horrible anyways so budget for a prop as well
I didn't even realize you could to that! And looked like a simple job. Nice man!

You bet! Thanks for watching!!
If I was doing this I would check the ignition advance between the two models and the injector size. If there the same spec I would say its the washer between the airbox and the throttle body, that is restricting down to the smaller hp
Man! Your video was awesome thank you. I’m soon to get the Suzuki 9.9 2022 4 stroke short shaft. Thank you for sharing that. If I ever have the need to up it to 15hp or 20. I now know how to do it. So amazing again thank you. Your video was super informative. Great job.

Unbelievable you can convert to that much more horsepower with such few parts. Good job
Yeah, pretty slick huh!!
9.9hp engines are tailor made for specific markets and regulatory rules. like in the EU the maximum engines kids under 16 can use is a 9.9hp engine. Easier to downgrade an existing engine design to meet the hp requirement than making a whole new engine.
What a great video!! Very well done, step by step!!!
Thanks Scott!!
A prop change would increase speed.
The 20 horse has a different prop.
The ECM controls max rpm.
Yes, mine was changed.

Thats great I was under the impression you had gotten a new motor!
No, the upgrade wasn't a purchase but rather a simple conversion!
with the new found torque, you can install a 12 or 13 pitch prop and get significantly more top speed out of that motor now.. Probably closer to 28-29 mph

I upgraded my 15 to 20, if I knew what I know now, I would have just bought the 9.9 and upgraded it. Others have mentioned changing the prop, but when I looked it up, the standard prop was the same for both. Haven’t had it out on the water yet, but it runs fine on the Mickey Mouse hose fitting

Larger prop will increase top speed and still give good hole shot. Try stainless cupped prop, big difference.
I might some day, but for now I really like what I got.
Great mod and I am sure you saved thousands.
Thanks, but I only saved around $40 or so. Though, technically I have an OB motor I can run as 9.9 or 20 hp. Also it says 9.9 so it’s valid on lakes that are 10 hp or less.
That’s awesome that you can upgrade by 10 HP that easily and for less than $500. Sweet ! Wonder if I can upgrade my Johnson 15 hp to a 30 as easily. Something to look into. 13 mph up to 21, yeah that’s a great upgrade and getting on plane that much quicker. Good job Kyle !
If your Johnson is a 4 stroke that is fuel injected then it might be possible. The only other model that I have heard of people doing it on is the Yamaha.

In fact, you can not buy anything at all, take out the metal flap from the rubber band, and the control unit ebu flash the firmware from 20hp motor, firmware is available on the network, I can share. It can be flashed with any programmer, for example piasini v4.3.

@@Dark30Outdoors Great idea buddy!!
Flame arrester on the intake of carb/fuel inj. system. I'd call it restricter plate.
Yeah, that's just what they call it.
All marine gasoline engines should have a flame arrestor on the intake. Especially an inboard or I/O. You have never seen a backfire (and it's not a noise from the exhaust)?
The airbox is the actual flame arrestor on outboards.
@@glennjames7107 Those engineers, what they won't think of.
I had no idea that was possible lol. Great video
Thanks Glen! Fairly easy to!
My question to you and anyone in the group who completed the upgrade to either 15 or 20hp is whether a noticable increase in power was noted at low to mid RPMs, or only at the high end because the WOT max was increased? For example would I expect to have greater speed (and therefore greater fuel consumption) at say 3500RPM (my expected typical cruising speed) after converting to 15 or 20hp? Thanks!
My boat sure gets up on plane a lot quicker than it did before! I don't think the increased fuel consumption is that noticeable really.
Great job, thank you
Appreciate it!
Great mod 👍🏼…simple unlike the old 2 stroke carb and tuned exhaust exchange…need my 9.9 Yamaha 4stroke done too but probly won’t be same mods…
Quite simple really. Not sure if it’s the same for Yamaha, but it would be worth looking into! 👍
Awesome upgrade! I thought you might be boring the cylinders 30 over and putting a turbo on it. 😂
Hahaha! Now, I'm brainstorming turbo ideas! lol
How long is your boat? I have a 16ft sea-nymph I'm debating on doing this to. I'm only getting 13mph with a 9.9 carbed correctly to a 15.
Mine is a 14.5':, and I'm getting 23 mph with a 10 pitch prop (keeps my RPM's well below red line). My buddy has the standard 9 pitch prop and the same motor on a 16' Sea Nymph and I'm sure he's over 20 and very happy with it! The conversion is super easy to do!!
We will be there Wed but we're not having you do a video of us this week so others can get in, hope we have a large turn out.
Sounds great!!
Looking to do this to a Mercury 9.9 EFI. The parts seems to be the same between the 9.9/15/20 EFIs, except for the ECUs and restrictors on the 9.9/15. Hope it'll be this easy for me.
I think it should be. 👍
@@Dark30Outdoors Yep, it was very similar, and worked. The ECU was a little harder as I had to remove the lower cowling a bit since the electric starter take up some room above the ECU so I couldn't pull it out without some more space.
@@john6268 That's awesome!
I would love to know how much difference it would be to just replace the restrictor plug with the flame arrestor with the original cd in place.
Good question, but I don’t know if that would have a negative impact on the existing ecm.
you can take the side cowling off to pull the air box down and forwards, I was staring at one of the bolts the whole video
Thanks! That's a good tip!
I remember yrs ago ( carburetor days) you could buy a merc 115 and re jet it to a 150 by using the 150 jets, under $25.
Now, that's a heck of a value!!
I guess you refer to the straight 6 Tower of Power. What a beautiful engine was that! Good memories from a long time ago.
Awesome- did you break in the motor first while it was a 9.9 ? I like the weight savings if using on an inflatable where it is being removed often.
Yes, I broke it in as a 9.9 and ran it for several months and through a couple of oil changes before doing the upgrade!
9.9 and 20 both weigh the same actually.

It would be nice to see what the flame arrestor looks like.
Good feedback, sorry if I missed showing that item.
Does anyone know if you can upgrade the 2023 9.9 to 20hp? Is everything the same or have they changed anything?
I don't see why not unless they changed the housing or added something and I doubt that to be the case.
Sweet!! Do you know if I can get more hp out of my 20hp tohatsu efi 4 stroke?? Please 🙏
Not sure. For this project, the 2 different motors are the same except the lower hp one reduces fuel flow with a restrictor plate and then uses a different EFI module. Something you could look into.
You need to swap the prop to a higher pitch to absorb the additional power. That will give you a higher top speed.
Yes, it was previously changed! 👍
I've got a 2013 9.9 Suzuki carby model can you do the same with it or can you only do it on the fuel injected model?
That's a good question! I'd guess that you can, but it would obviously be different parts!
hello my friend, greetings and greetings. thank you for sharing we really like the video ♥️♥️♥️♥️🥰🥰🥰🌹🌹🌹👍👍👍
Check to see what sparkplugs go on the 20 HP. Might be best to run with them.
I believe they are the exact same. 👍
The restrictor allows running only at very low speeds…. Pumping losses go way up once you go much above Idle speed.
The reason this works for Suzuki is because the 9.9 and the 20 are the same motor with different intake controls. They both weigh 108 pounds in the long shaft version. But other manufacturers have different approaches. Example Tohatsu offers a 9.9 that weighs the same as their 20. They also offer a 9.8 that is significantly lighter. The 9.8 weighs 80 pounds. If you are frequently using a portable on a dinghy from a larger vessel, the difference in lifting 80 pounds or 108 pounds is significant. It magnifies when mounting to a dinghy in a rolling anchorage. I only post this to highlight the differences between the 2 brands. I have a Tohatsu 4hp on a small boat and a Yammy 175 on a slightly bigger boat. I don't own a Suzy.
Very true!! 👍
@@Dark30Outdoors Thanks for the thumbs up. My comment was nothing against your post. The upgrade is awesome and probably less expensive than the 20. I was just thinking of different applications which have different priorities. As a young man in his 70's, weight is becoming very important.
@@williamstreet4304 I can certainly appreciate that!
This is true - most, if not all 9.9s are restricted versions of the 15 or 20hp. The manufacturers do this across their lineups - I think your yammy is the same engine as the 200, just without vvt
PS: 70 ain’t nothing young lad!
Wonder if you had a Suzuki 6 hp with a carb...Is there any hop ups for that? cost? performance?
I'm not sure. I know the 9.9 and the 20 HP that Suzuki makes use the exact same housing, and really everything is the same except for those 3 simple parts!
Really!! That’s All you do to convert 9.8 hp to 20 hp!! Amazing.
It's pretty sweet!!
Hi - Tom from New Zealand here. I loved your conversion. What year is your Suzuki outboard?
Thank you! Mine is a 2021!
Interesting to see if it uses less fuel at the same speed without that restrictor. In a similar thing where the manufacture limited the power output for the same engine, I had a Cub Cadet with a Kawasaki engine that went from 22hp to 25hp by just allowing the throttle butterfly to open fully.
If I had to guess it likely uses a bit more fuel, but it isn't so much that it is really noticeable at all.
GM used to limit the throttle valve opening angle on some cars when they had corporate edicts on the amount of power for that size car. One of the first buff-book recommendations was to have someone fully depress the accelerator pedal while you stared down through the top of the carb - of course with the engine off and air cleaner lid removed. If you saw the throttle plate wasn't going vertical, you could look for what was stopping it short and remove that restriction.
That is the ECU part number for the non electric start model if I’m not mistaken. Yours is the non electric start model?
Mine is electric start.
Did you buy the parts direct from the Suzuki dealership in the US or did you get them from your local boat shop? I was looking into doing the mod if I ever came across a second hand Suzuki 9.9 HP outboard but I wouldn't know where to look for the parts.
I ordered them from Boats.net
do you get any performace gains with just the flame arrestor? or do you need the ecu?
I am not sure, I think you do get some. Though, the fuel injectors under the 9.9 ECU are going to push through less fuel than the 20 ECU.
I think the ecu raises the rpm limiter…
Seems like you should be able to get quite a bit more out of that with higher pitch. I have a Johnson 25 and I am running a 10.3X13 pitch. I can run about 30 mph by myself and 27mph fully loaded with two people. It's a 14 ft fully decked, a lot of gear, and 2 trolling motor batteries as well. I saw some of your other comments that it's common for people to run the even smaller 9 pitch but that seems like quite the difference from my 13. I guess I'm not sure what the diameter is either, or what rpm you are turning. Might just be a big difference from 2 to 4 stroke as well.
I do think the 2 strokes turn a higher rpm. I used a temporary ob before this Suzuki came in. It was a 9.9 2 stroke that had a carb mod to 15 hp. It got me to 18 mph. I'm really happy with this set up. I never have to worry about hitting the redline and get pretty good speed out of it. Plus I can use it on 10 HP restricted lakes with no issues.
Exact same thing on the 40/50/60 Zukes!
Good to know!! 👍

@@geirleirvik1478 it can be done either way, but I am unsure of the actual difference between the 2 ways.

Yes, I have a 3 blade 10 pitch, but I know many run the stock 3 blade 9 pitch. With the stock 9 pitch blade the motor will run much closer to the rev limiter.
Up next a super charger and a Bigfoot kit!!
Hahaha! Sure, why not!
Where did you get the parts to make the conversion? Thanks
I ordered mine from Boats.net.
Still, something needs to be added. You now have the chance that the engine will overspeed and this requires another propeller with a higher pitch. this really brings the engine to higher speeds.
Lots of guys have run the stock 3 blade 9 pitch, but it will run the rpm close to max. I accidentally ordered a High Thrust which came with a 4 blade prop. I didn't realize that. So, I switched to a 3 blade 10 pitch prop and can run my 15 foot Spectrum wide open with no worries!
You mentioned that your 9.9 is 2021. So is mine, so because I see at least a few ECUs with different part numbers can you tell me which one you installed? For example 33930-89L20, or 33930-89L30, or 33930-89L40 ? The part#s for the flame arrestor and seal are straightforward. Thanks!

@@Dark30Outdoors My model has elect start, remote/non tiller, power tilt and is, I think, different than yours so I'm unsure whether a different ECU is required or not for those features.
