Working Actor Now Homeless in Los Angeles

  • "What hurts the most is the friends and family that used to be there, that when you get into this situation, everybody just chucks it up to drug abuse or bad choices...that's not always the case. Sometimes it's just the choice is made for you and you don't have any choice." ~ Dennis
"Through an avalanche of unfortunate events" is how Dennis ended up homeless in Los Angeles. Dennis is a working actor. He moved to New York City into an apartment he couldn't afford. After three years his partner split and wiped him out financially. Dennis had to start over.
Dennis's elderly mother is in an assisted living home. He tried to live at the facility but that did not work out. He ended up living in a broken-down car for over a year.
Dennis says homelessness used to be that person you didn't know. Now, homelessness is your sons or your daughters, your sisters or your fathers.

    About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as CZcams, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

Update on him : He is a skilled carpenter now and on job .
Edit 0ct 2022 : Just revisited this comment and seen alot of interest, respose and good wishes. For all those who are interested, His full name is Dennis Kyle . If you give his name in CZcams search, you'll find a number of his past singing and acting performances . During or after Corona he again faced tough times due to which he launched a fundraiser on GoFundMe in 2021. People did help and he collected more than his target.

Being homeless is the absolute worst feeling in the world. Having nothing to do. Not knowing when you are going to eat again while being thirsty and starving. Sneaking into public bathrooms. Freezing at night. Being alone and scared. The dirty looks from people. Going through all of this day after day.

I wish I realized this when I was still homeless. But you really have lots of stuff you can do. Make a list of all the places in your country you want to see, and start hiking. You won't have this opportunity once you have a fulltime job and bills to pay. At least not for many years. Take temp jobs, use that for your hiking supplies, a tent, campsites, etc. Buy a cheap acoustic guitar. Teach yourself the open chords and learn some simple songs. Playing on a corner is not the same as panhandling because you are providing a service for tips. You can, and probably will get in trouble if you just fly a sign, it's technically illegal.

    • @Mephilis78
      @Mephilis78 Před rokem +70

@@justxho When I was homeless I fully understood that the disdain people show was the result of how other homeless people in the area behaved. Most of the "fellow" homeless people I met were horribly selfish and entitled people. I saw one of them literally assault a man over a single cigarette. I'm sure most of them are still homeless too, because they refused to do the things necessary to get out. You can't just spend all the money that comes into your hands. That's what most of them do. Especially in Orlando, they all just got high on molly and didn't seem to care if they ever got off the streets.
So having this attitude, that the normal people who are literally doing what they need to not to be homeless themselves, are somehow obligated to help you, is part of what is keeping you homeless. Nobody owes you anything.
Also consider that you, most likely, are not the *only* person asking them for help. There are other homeless asking for the same things. There may even be family asking for help. Just because they don't help you, right this instant, when you ask doesn't mean they hate all homeless people. This is an incredibly selfish viewpoint.
This brings me to very biggest piece of advice I can give any homeless person: stay away from other homeless people as much as possible. They will hold you down. They will want you to share everything, so that you always have nothing. They have no remorse or guilt. In the off chance you find another homeless person who actually wants to work as a team, and pull their share, good, but it's impossibly rare.

The saddest part of this video for me is seeing an honest guy just talk candidly about how he has got to where he is. He's not putting on an act, playing for sympathy, or anything other than just describing his situation.
Most people assume bad habits have landed people into a world of homelessness, and as this guy has just said, it can happen without warrant and to those who were once living a 'normal' life.
I have experienced homelessness. It's the constant thinking you have to do which wears you down. Where is the next meal? When can I use a bathroom next? Where can I find somewhere quiet and dry just to close my eyes and get some rest?
I pray to God this guy, and others who suffer similarly, can find hope to start with and then possibly the answers to get themselves back on track. I've been fortunate enough to be able to get myself back in a solid job and relationship, but really wish that for others who have gone through, or are currently going through, a similar experience.
Don't judge, just be considerate and help whenever you can. It means the world to someone who has nothing. ✌️❤️

And as far as friends go, maybe he doesn't have any friends with the means to help him? You cannot judge a book by it's cover, and certainly can't prejudge him based upon a six minute video. Like he said, people deserve a second chance in life! I wish I was able to contact him and help out in some way!

@TheFallsCapone You are right that you cannot always believe what you are told. My brother is a drug addict and has been homeless many times because of it. For a long time I would give him money when he would ask for it, because I always felt bad for him and didn't want to see him go without. But then it got to the point I realized he was just using the money for drugs. And when he asked for help, I told him to tell me what he needed, and I would go buy it. He completely flipped out on me because of it! His addictions have destroyed our family. I know you've got to be careful about being too trusting. But, I can assure you that not ALL homeless folks are addicts. I have met a few here and there. And sometimes folks can be a victim of circumstances. I met a woman and her daughter living out of their van. (In Indianapolis, IN). The mom had been laid off work, and slowly but surely they lost everything they had. I had twenty bucks on me, and gave it all to her. I've always wondered how they were doing.

2020 was the worst year of my life. I had a good job in Sydney Australia, living by myself and my cat, saving money, working out everyday, saving for holidays..... One day I got so sick I ended at the hospital.... Blood cancer diagnosed... I thought I was going to die.... I lost so much weight and probably I needed blood transfusion... In the middle of covid crisis..... Then I got fired from my job, I couldn't work as I was extremely sick at the time.... Four months later I got a little bit better but I was still underweight and had anemia.. I took a flight back home as my savings were going down fast and if I didn't act quickly I will end up dead at the hospital or homeless. Right now I'm doing better, living with my parents as I'm still recovering but when shit happens, it happens very fast.... Also my partner at that time didn't help me, he left me too... I NEVER ignore a man or women in legitimate need. Even if its just to sit with them for a while and listen. Give a cigaratette, make a phone call, acknowledge their existence. Basically being a movie actor has nothing to do with art or simply the desire to practice a form of expression.
Cinema is always the same as itself by the Lumière brothers age: a bit of cheap amazement .
EvenByzantine icons are more dynamic in content ...
Cinema does not represent drama, it is a drama itself even when movies are comedies or romantic stories.
Movie actors are either evil magic pipers for unwary or unwary people lost in a nightmare that mingles with daydreams of fame, wealth and sex: that’s the tragedy.

I think for some, they have a distorted view that homelessness is because of irresponsible behavior, such as drug and alcohol abuse, or failing to conform to societal standards in seeking employment. This is true in some cases, but not all. When someone homeless approaches them for money, they may automatically assume the individual will use it to support their drug or alcohol addiction. Unfortunately, genuine homeless people without these ulterior motives will be denied help because of it. I know sometimes it is difficult in discerning who is and not honest in these cases, but it is good to have a heart that a lot of them are in need.

This is a situation ANYONE can go through when you have that avalanche of unfortunate events and literally have nowhere to go, no friends, no family to really look up to. I've noticed those going through the hardest situations often have good spirits on the outside, but surely it's rough emotional turbulence inside. This is heartbreaking but I am thankful that there are channels such as Invisible People that show individuals what is really going on with those in need in the world. Humanity is out there, it is just unfortunate that it isn't shown as much as hate is. Notice the wishes are rarely ever selfish in nature?

It’s also the actions of others too. What I mean like getting a job and ect, I wish people would understand that too. You just can’t waltz into a job and go to work. It’s the actions of others if you are in or not. It also works as a dynamic you and others 🌹

@@mafereir ..Sometimes when someone is victimized (Daughter and myself medically tortured- she was murdered, (2006-2007) car vandalized, (2010-2015) destruction of property,(2010-2021) mail tampering via Post Office and elsewhere (2015-2021) , illegal entries in apartments/current rented room (2015-2021) theft of belongings/food)(2015-2021) repeatedly for over a decade, no one does anything about it except cover it up/cover it over, and money is used as a weapon to control, it is nearly impossible to get ahead. What has been done to me is a blatent diabolical scheme to bankrupt me, and drive me into homelessness ! This is done by blocking me with obtaining a decent paying position, (cell phone hacking/viruses, (2008-2021) destruction of 2 computers, (2020-2021) internet hacking/spying -2005-2021) denial of a job despite qualifications, thus, backing me into a financial corner, and destroying almost everything that I value ! (vehicle-worked 3 jobs to pay off, cookware, 3+ pairs running sneakers, 2 pairs hiking boots, newer backpack, clothing, and a whole host of other items)
In addtion, I was set up to be fired twice, (2008+2011) even though I worked my tail off, and while I was working for the Town of Monroe, CT, there was massive sabbotage happening !
It was horrible, in addition to, almost getting killed by a plow that almost ran me off of the road (2010-2011). Yet again, almost killed in downtown Hartford, CT two weeks ago, upon stepping off of a bus, thank God I looked before I walked off the bus ! If I did not, I would have gotten hit by a bald African American male driving a white van. This happened across the street from the Capitol Hotel, Hartford, CT ! All true !
I am not kidding ! All of this is true, which happened after I lost my infant daughter, and the divorce !
Before that..there was a near fatal accident - Hudson, FL - May 2005, and the "other nightmare" that has almost systematically destroyed my life...1979-2004, 2004-2021.

Don't abandon your friends. We all need help sometimes. The only way through, is not around. We all struggle. You all, have got... to get through it. Each day work to improve yourself. Nothing will happen overnight. Keep fighting. Keep reaching out. Don't get stagnant and give up. Pray. Ask whatever benevolent being you want to. Just speak to them. Reach beyond yourself in this life.
