Cast Iron Grate Upgrade for the Weber Kettle

  • This video is a product review of a cast iron grate upgrade for a Weber kettle. They are available for the 18.5", 22.5" and 26.75" Weber kettles. I've been wanting to upgrade to this grate for a while as cast iron holds and distributes heat better than other metals, it has a non-slick surface and over time cast iron will season with the various flavors of foods you cook on it.

    I've been cooking on my Craycort(s) for years now and can't say enough about them. I've actually got to know the owner of the company pretty well because of my channel. They are cast iron, so as you know, the carbon levels are high, which is why they are so good on the grill. As long as you take care of it, and keep it very well oiled, rust won't be a problem. If it does rust, hit it with sand paper and re-season it. Not a big deal.

    Great, thanks for the link. I've been looking all over the web for the 26" cast iron modulars, as I'm planning to upgrade my 22" weber by the end of the summer.

    thanks for the head's up. i'll def make sure to do that. didn't see any instructions in the box, but i was assuming they do in fact come seasoned. didn't think to hit them w/ crisco though, so thx for the tip. curious: you say you have a hard time keeping yours from rusting. do you keep yours in the kettle when not being used, or stored somewhere inside out of the elements?

  • @TangoSpiceCompany
    @TangoSpiceCompany Před 12 lety

    There has been minimal rust issues, but some has developed even with seasoning.
    I actually oil the heck out of them after a few cooks and that seems to keep it in line. The quality and the sear marks are great!

    @StokedOnSmoke Man you just sold me on the 26" Weber and the cast iron grate upgrade!!! I was kinda on the fence on whether to just buy a newer model 22" or go bigger, the price sounds a lot better for the 22" but I could REALLY use the extra cooking surface. I've had the same old Weber for 12 years, the one with the wooden handle,and its been hanging on by a thread for years and the legs rusted completely off.

  • @ManCaveMeals
    @ManCaveMeals Před 12 lety

    I keep it in my storage box outside when not in use. It stays dry in there but the humidity might be higher than indoor humidity. It just needs to be used more frequently than I use it most likely...

    Lol, very good James, a way of life huh? Yea can see that happening as I am getting caught up in this grilling whatever. After cooking for many years on a boring gas grill I switched over last summer to cooking on charcoal, not Kingsford crap, but hardwood lump charcoal. After my first steak, never will go back to cooking on gas. Now I have two charcoal grills the Lodge Logic Sportsman's Cast Iron Grill and the now the Weber Jumbo Joe. Gonna have some fun this summer pisan.

  • @ManCaveMeals
    @ManCaveMeals Před 12 lety

    Give it a good seasoning before you cook on it. I know they are pre-seasoned but you won't regret doing this anyway. Coat it down on all surfaces with a thin film of crisco and then put enough charcoal in the grill to get it up to 350 for an hour or so and then let it cool. I have one of these for the 22.5" and I'm having a very hard time keeping rust off of it. It needs to be used frequently and sprayed with oil before and after each use...

  • @StokedOnSmoke
    @StokedOnSmoke  Před 11 lety

    I absolutely love it. But...I often cook for a large # of people. And... I often smoke low and slow on it. So the bottom line is if you don't plan to smoke on it or need a lot of grill real estate for larger cooks, then I'd recommend the 22.5". The 26.75" is a charcoal hog and you will burn through a ton of fuel with it. In the end, that's not an issue to me b/c I'd rather have more space, but for most people that don't cook for a bunch of people I think it's probably overkill...

      I like the Napoleon grate for my Weber. It has handles to lift the grate out without getting your hands dirty. Also the grates are hinged so you can easily add charcoal and are also removable. I can see in the video it would be a pain using a chimney to start charcoal. The handles make it easier for to lift out at start up to light your charcoal using a chimney inside the BBQ. just my opinion. This may be easier to find at your local Napoleon store.

    Lol, this cast iron grate cost more than a whole Weber Jumbo Joe Grill! $70 bucks plus shipping. If you want to cook on cast iron check out the Lodge Logic Sportsman Grill. totally cast iron and the WHOLE grill is now on special at Amazon. I have one and it gets HOT! 160 sq. in. ofcooking surface, so it's not that big, but can handle two good size steaks, and about 6 regular size burgers. Best grill I ever used. This Craycort cast iron grate is over priced.

    Crazy over priced garate, it's nice just not $150 nice. I can buy another kettle for that price or just buy a square one from weber and put it on top of the original grate or cook on the original grate. Their is nothing wrong with the Original great, it will still do a find job.
    What is it with over pricing everything now a days? Is this like a fashion thing?

    LOOK to some of us grilling isn't just a hobby but a WAY of LIFE.$70 to be able to feed your family no matter the economic status or if the grid goes down don't make a shit. Just be bumping on these grills, no electric. Making good food for my family because the COVERNMENT is ruining our country. Just look at Greece and Italy (MY HOMELAND).
    $70 is a small investment when you want to live off the land and yourself and NOT big dick government cheese.

    Several comments here:1. I have had one of these for over a year. It does a great job. Unfortunately, it is made in China. The owners of the company don't seem to take pride on offering American-made products.2. Your grill is gross and disgusting. You should never have shown it on camera.3. Potential Weber Buyers: Weber makes a great grill, Unfortunately, some are now being made in China and they are NOT as good as those made in the USA. Double-check that you are buying an American grill and not cheap Chinese crap.
