In this doom metal guitar lesson I teach you the entire rhythm section from Empress Rising by Monolord. The song is broken down into its main riffs, each demonstrated and explained in full detail.
Your guitar will need to be tuned to B Standard: B - E - A - D - F# - B
The song is played in the key of B-Minor (E-Minor position in Standard Tuning) and its riffs utilize elements from the Phrygian Mode {R, b2, b3, p4, p5, b6, b7} with the added b5 from the Blues Scale and M7 from the Harmonic Minor Scale.

@@DoesItDoom I don't know if it's particular to this video but you could add some time signature and bpm mentions for the riffs, that'd be nice! For me it would complete the infos about the riffs since you already give scales, modes and stuff.

The Sword songs are pretty straightforward they actually mostly dont use the intervals of doom they stick to the natural minor or pentatonic scales.... very traditional. I learned a few of their songs by ear from 4 different albums, and yeah theyre quite traditional & intuitive. Nevertheless I fkn love the Sword! Gods of thr Earth is my alltime #2 favorite album and their songs are super awesome and theyre in my top 5 bands of all time \,,/

I started Empress Rising from scratch last time we spoke. I couldn't get an isolated track from the guys, so It took me some time to translate drums to MIDI. I was also tweaking with the effects for the intro, got a nice combination from The Dephts + Afterneath and some wah to make it crunchier.
As always it's great to see your lessons dude. You always have a different view and I end up mixing both ways, same happened with Orchard! @@DoesItDoom

Any bands use 7 string for Stoner/Sludge/Doom? It seems that you would get the best of both worlds, those low notes without changing nuts/saddles to accommodate the heavy gauges...

Not really. Had one and didn’t like it much. For something that was supposed to emulate classic Sabbath it was just over the top saturated.
Did you happen to learn anything off Rust? I'm not too sure of the tabs online for 'Where Death Meets The Sea'...

I have not. If I take the time to learn it I generally teach it as well. My advice is to tune your guitar to B Standard and try playing along with live footage here on CZcams. Use the slow down feature as needed. It will get you closer than a typical internet tab will more often than not.

Low output pickups, clean amp. I think that octave up in the hyperfuzz had that character to an extent.
Oh okay, i guess ive only got high output pickups on most of my guitars. Is there a way to still get that good of a tone on high output?

This might be a stupid question but why not use a baritone for B standard? Or can you restring a regular 6-string with a baritone string set?
You can. I have just always used standard scale guitars, as did all of the guitarists I learned from early on.
some people don't like baritones because the longer fret spacing can be a pain, and also sometimes they can have tuning stability problems due to the longer neck.
I know I'm a little late, but do you remember what your amp settings were?
Typically I run it on the clean channel with treble at 9 o’clock, mids at noon, bass max. I’m sure it was close to that.

The two amps are a mid 80’s Laney AOR Pro Tube Lead 100W and a 1969 Laney LBO-60 Supergroup.
Are you working this out by ear, and if so, do you have a decent tab? I read sheet music and really dig being able to read the rhythms on well transcribed tabs.
I work it out by ear while studying live concert footage of the band playing the song. No tabs unfortunately. Right now I just don’t have the time to put that stuff together (wish I did!)
@@DoesItDoom I totally understand the time constraints - I haven't gotten into transcribing rhythms myself for the same reason. It's time consuming! The tutorials are great though! The live concert footage makes a huge difference, your Dragonaut tutorial is the only one I've found that gets it right and it made a huge difference for me. Thanks for all the hard work!

I’d say there is a decent difference, yeah. I have a 49 on one of my SG’s and a 52 on another and I notice a difference between them.
