What is strange is that a lot of these guitars in the early 70's were less desirable than the new guitars. We didn't want a guitar played by someone else. We wanted our own new guitar. Then the collectors came in a bought everything up to sit on for 40 years. So they can sell guitars which should have been circulated for far more than their real worth to people who have way too much money. Guitars became a commodity.

I bought a Les Paul Deluxe sunburst new in 1975 with a hardshell purple lined case. I also kept the hang tag and original receipt. When I decided to sell it in 1996 the guys at the music store told me I would never get more than $500 (I paid $450). They said the Grover tuners that I had professionally installed destroyed the value of the guitar, along with some tiny scratches on the back (I couldn't see any). Finally I held out for $600 from a private buyer. Somewhere out there there's a guy with the guitar, case, receipt and hang tag. I shudder to think what that would be worth now. If I still had it I would never sell it. Oh, and the jokers at the music store told me, "Gibson didn't make a Deluxe in 1975, it must be a Standard."

Would you be willing to drop every penny you have on guitars, in the hope that they will go up in value? Because Norm did that for decades - and during a time when Strats and Les Pauls definitely weren’t sure-things.
I bought a late 60s Gibson ES, in LA, about a decade ago, for about $4k (the going rate) because I always wanted one, and was convinced they would go up in value. I thought I couldn’t lose. Guess what - the price hasn’t moved up at all lol. I’d struggle to even get $4k for it right now. It’s a lot harder than you think. Takes serious balls to invest in guitars when the entire guitar economy is like the stock market - prices go up/down and can flatline for literally decades
He makes money now, but that’s only from literally decades of risk taking, near bankruptcies, and rolling the dice

6:29! Thats the gem, whats the insurance value of that store? Personally i would not have all these guitars in the same location in case the unthinkable happend! I'm Amazed at how you just drag them out banging the case is around slap some down grab them with his hands full of rings absolutely amazing. I have a modest collection epiphone's the most expensive might be a Couple Grand in price and I handle them literally like they are the Mona Lisa. I know they're versatile I know they're only instruments I know they're meant to be played gigged xcetera but it absolutely blows my mind at how he handles these guitars I'm not saying that he's damaging them in anyway but just blows my mind. I guess if anybody's looking for a curator I would be the obvious choice, meanwhile to do this video would have taken me about 6 hours because I would have been so careful with the guitars

I'm sure they play nice, but the reason they cost so much is the rarity of them. I don't care about that, just how they play. I wouldn't buy them if I had Bill Gates money. They're just not worth it to me. I guess you could impress impressionable people with them, but I'm not into that either. Fun to look at them though. The history and all.

    • @xxczerxx
      @xxczerxx Před 7 lety +10

Some of them are actually fairly solid investments if you have the money for them, those '59 Les Pauls only go up in value as time goes on. It's insane to think that back then you could buy one for the equivalent of $1800 in today's money (they were $250 back then) and sell it for $100,000 now. I'd love to know if there's anything we could possibly buy today for that price that would gain that value in 50 years.

I turned one down for $2000 in 1977, it was dead mint.
But then again I could have bought $10K worth of Sun Microsystems stock right at the IPO. If I had held on to that investment and got out at the optimum time, that money at the then current market price would have bought roughly 25 percent of the world's supply of "Bursts" at their then market value. (Assuming they made roughly 1600 and had an eighty percent survival rate to that point.)
My dad turned down a Ferrari GTO for five grand because the rear end made noise and chunks of Bondo (the factory bondo, they used lots) were falling off. Would have been '71 or so.
Couldashouldawoulda has no end and can only drive you nuts.

These prices are out of control. The three pickup '57 LP Custom for $110,000? No wonder
Norm has had it for literally decades in the store. Unless Keith Richards, Jimmy Page, or
Eric Clapton has owned this guitar (which is possible, of course), on today's market it
might bring half that. Tops. I owned a '54 LP Custom, original all the way, and it was only
worth about $30,000-35,000. I know there are a lot of factors involved in pricing but
seriously ... I'd bet most people would rather own that LP Standard, all gold, from 1954
than the three pickup LP Custom. One would think the originality of the '54 Custom would
make it more valuable but no. It's not that sought after. It's those LP Standards and Gold
Top Standards from '57 to '60 because, well, look who played them and they are the cream
of the crop electrics from the greatest vintage of Gibson's electric solid body models.

A 1959 burst les paul goes for ~$400,000, as much as a house.

The right ones go for more, now. Celeb history and or flameyness can put you well over half a mil.
But the downside-they will never be worthless, but they almost certainly will be worth a lot less when the boomers all bust. They are not like Old Cremona violins where they are a matter of state prestige for symphony orchestras, and even those could take a markdown when Trump cuts off funding to symphonies here.
No one now under 30 gives a shit about Michael Bloomfield, Cream era Clapton, or any of the things that made Bursts the original vintage electric guitar.
In a lot of the country you can get a very nice house for a lot less than 400K, by the way.
