- I hook up a datalogger to the Tesla Model Y Performance find out it makes more horsepower than the Model 3 Performance. How does that translate to a roll race? Watch and see!

I misread the battery parameter from the software, the Model Y has the same size battery as the 3, sorry about that!
DragTimes hey sir, I was wondering if u could maybe help me with something. Yesterday I put new 21” vorsteiner wheels on my car 20 Model 3 long range AWD.. I was driving home and all of the sudden, at 40mph and above, my traction control light came on and my regen braking was like pulsating when I was slowing or stopping..
I went in and changed the wheel size (the biggest option was 20” wheel).
I don’t know what’s wrong. My friend had them on his car before and they worked fine. Vorsteiner employees have no idea why it’s doing that either, they sell all kinds of wheels and have never had a problem.
Not size but capacity.
Perhaps update your twitter post about this as well.
Its all good, we all make mistakes. Appreciate the Vid.
Jazmine Sanchez maybe I can help... what’s your tire size?
8:35 Dude, you're giving away their plans for Model 3's Ludicrisp Model
Thanks Brooks! Good stuff. Always love your breakdowns, your angle.
Thanks for the content Brooks!
Great data as always. Thank you!
Super Great Content as always !
The battery pack isn't actually bigger. Your model 3 may need a balancing and does have some natural degradation to appear as a smaller pack.
Best drag racing ever
Awsum information!
Glad to see confirmation Model Y uses the same rear console connector and CAN signals as Model 3, thanks!
That ODB2 is neat, but it's no R2D2!
Cool info on the interceptor, will totally buy
Dragtimes Awesome Video I think it awesome that the your Tesla Model Y Performance has more Power than your Tesla Model 3 Performance and I think you should get the Tesla track wheels because they look awesome
Great video ! Will be interesting to compare with a 2020 M3P.
I’m sure Tesla is sand bagging performance right now, when the time is right the updates will drop!
You should consider the Martian Wheels MW03 19" forged wheels for your P3. Should save a good amount of weight. Then get some lighter rotors from MountainPass Performance as well.
Can you compare the roof width of the M3 vs MY? I’m interested if the roof rack fits both models. Thanks
Can you please check what motors are in the Perf Y? You can usually see the plate with model number through the left rear wheel.
Have you measured curb weight of both?
Looking forward when 3 phase DC fast charging becomes available for Home use with a 3 phase converter of course. Keep us informed when you hear something. Great videos!
It's been available in Europe for some time now. All new houses, at least in Norway is 400V 3 phase into the fuse box.
Great potential news!!
I’ve never seen such high HP for the Model 3; the Avg from other “experts” ranges from 473 to 490. Is your number at the motor shaft? The axle? The wheel? I suspect it’s at the motor shaft, and if you account for driveline losses by multiplying by the traditional 80 percent, the result is 463; multiplying by 83 percent will yield 480. I don’t doubt your numbers; numbers don’t lie! I just wonder where the discrepancy is? And 623 HP for the Model Y! Holy moly!
Love your channel!! Pure, legal Drag racing ( well, Mostly). Great work, great content!
Brooks, can you do a new read out of the M3P? Curious if they very recently boosted it a bit for us ... heard that it did happen. Or, drag race em again :)
Thats pretty cool setup. Does it show battery temp too?
I don't think you can just add up front and rear peak power (In a combined power), as they might reach peak in different times. You should look for a different data that have a real combined power or at battery discharge (As a better proxy).
Correct, it would have to be max for both combine at a specific time. IE (Rear.P + Front.P)= Total.P @ t=Time
More power with launch !!! 🙏🏻
Will the track pack wheels fit fine on the performance Y it need some tweaks?
Roll race, the red car moved a good .5 seconds before the weight even transferred (indicating the start) in the White Car. That roll race should have been done more than once. It even looked like the White car was slowly reeling in the Red car so I think its also faster from a roll.
7:38 My 2018/10 Model 3 LR AW using Scan May Tesla I have Nominal Full Pack 77.0 kWh and Nominal Remaining 68.5 kWh
Man, I love these videos. Keeps my mind distracted for 10 minutes. Just talking about Model Y stuff, even though I wont be able to get one. Yet! Maybe in a couple years.
Wow, good stuff. Who knew the battery was bigger, that is the most shocking (pun i know) thing about this.
Yeah the battery packs are the same. Nominal battery, especially for new cars are like 77-78kw. Mine was like 79 brand new, weird calculation, but it isn’t the stat to use. Also, the Model Y motors sound different from Model 3 (more power).
Tesla would probably never do this but it sounds like the potential for this additional power could also be extended to my LR AWD?
Great that you finally purchased SMT. A brand new LR battery pack has between 77 and 78kWh irrespective if M3 or MY. it normaly loses 1kWh after the first 500miles. Your M3 has experienced already a steep degradation of 5kWh over only 11kmiles. But that is just the calculation of the BMS that can vary with time. Think about charging more often to 90% to potentially regain some of the lost capacity. I still have 76.8kWh on my M3 LR after one year and 18kmiles.
I believe 5% loss in 1st year is typical then levels off.
Link for adapter cable? (CAN2 interceptor dongle)
Where can we get the cable interceptor?
Put light 18-19inch wheels on its will go around 0-60 in around 3.2seconds
Hate to break the news to you but my LR Model 3 came with 77.5kwh when I tested it with less than 1000 miles on it. It’s now at 12k miles at 72.6kwh. It’s the same pack as the model 3.
Brook, what kind of impact do thing a set of 21” Tsportline light alloys should make on the model Y. I also have a Performance Model 3 with the Tsportline 20’ Light alloys and a Y Performance coming any time now.
Friedman Photos any reason why you wanted to go with 20”? If you want a lightweight setup I’d go down to 18s. A lot of aftermarket 18” will clear your wheels and give you much more affordable performance tire options
How did you get to Mexico for the speed runs with the boarder closed? *wink*
Would it be possible for you to do some range testing with lighter wheels? I love the performance with Performance package but losing +30 miles for the looks seems not ideal. So right now I'll be going with the Performance w/out the performance package but I'd like to see if by changing the wheels for something lighter and perhaps 19" will do the trick to gain some range back.
thanks!
What stance and suspension changes with the PUP?
So does it actually have that much HP then since the battery is the same size??
Im saving for a Tesla now :)
How much do you think tesla will charge for a ludicrous mode on an m3p?
I think they might do something like a model 3&y perf with all the upgrades after release of the model s plaid later this year. 🤔
Nope
Do you have a link to the splitter you're using? Great vid, thanks for the content!
In the description, thanks!
@@DragTimes Oh, sorry.. I clicked on all the links and I thought the e-mobility link was just the Scan My Tesla app. I see the cable in their shop now. Thank you!
Thanks, interesting stuff. From the roll race, it looks like the extra power of the Y offsets the extra weight and drag pretty neatly - the M3P's advantage is all in that first few yards. If they really are the same motors (which would make sense from an economies of scale perspective) it would be great if they would give/sell a software update unlocking the extra on the M3P. I would buy that for my M3P.
A few people are saying that the M3P brakes aren't great for repeated stops - are you interested in the brake side of the performance package or sticking strictly to dragtime enhancements?
Stock pad and fluid sucks. They are for daily driving. Design to stop at low temp. Upgraded pad and brake fluid. Make those breaks one of the best. Plus track mode generating breaking is really strong.
The M3 and MY both limit acceleration to a fixed G value, so its likely the exact same powertrain and programming, but to accelerate the heavier MYP to the same G limit requires more power. Like you could literally probably put a 250lbs dude in the passenger seat of the M3P and then observe the same power as the Y has.
Brooks, clean your carpet! 😂
Would love to see Tesla unleash that power being held back in the Model 3 Performance, as well as give it launch control. It almost seems like Tesla hates the M3P the way they want to keep ignoring the owners asking for the power increase.
Tesla P3D They hate the M3P so much that they made Track mode v2 specially for it...
I’m not sure you can just add the two peak KW figures together like that. They may peak at different times. Since you have the curves, can you add the front and rear lines together and then look at that peak KW?
agree, better to look at max output from battery
Thanks for the video! Do you know if the ODB data shows TURN SIGNAL STATUS and current vehicle speed? Would you be willing to post a google doc with a full export of the vehicle stats? Thinking about making a HUD for Model Y. Thanks!
it has speed for sure, don't think I saw turn signal, I'll check....
DragTimes thanks!
Is this guy still the technical director of the Frost Science Museum, I once visited? Must have a nice paycheck...
The 45 extra hp makes sense given the near even trap speeds and 4,416 lb vs 4,100 lb Model 3 Performance.
Motor sounds different to me on the Y
Brooks, you're the first to notice the battery size difference. That's interesting. Your numbers jive with the actual performance of the two cars. Model 3 quicker off line but then Model Y starts to reel it in. This is shown by the roll on races.
Alex NutCasio actually they’re the same. Read comments from owners who’ve tested the packs and flung segregation from the higher figure of around 78 down to 72.
You have to take the peak power as a combination of the front and back at the same moment [(Rear.P + Front.P) = Total.P @ t=Time]. You took max of the front and the max of the rear at two completely different times.
did you miss the graph?
@@DragTimes perhaps...let me take another look. Love your vids I just thought you should know.
I did miss it, must have gotten side tracked or I wouldn't have said that....my bad. Keep up the good work!
Yes. Model 3 and Model Y have the exact same battery capacity. The Model 3 had some degradation due to 11000miles. Probably a BMS miscalibration - I talk about it on my chan. By the way, unless you get a product sponsorship from this company, there is actually a 75$ cheaper adapter that you can get in the US shipped withing 1 business days.
Model 3 ftw!!
Where is the 720 v p1 Brooks? Wtf happened there dude? Did the 720 really smoke the p1??
Is Model 3 F motor 184.5 kW ?
This model Y does not seem
To have the new (slower) LG battery, I know this because voltage doess nor sag and drop when you accellerate Quickly.
Apparently the consumption for some stages was infinity. Dang.
Bigger battery by 5kWh will give 40HP. I think Tesla wound back Model Y to give the Model 3 Performance sufficient performance advantage. You pays your money you takes your choice, Model Y well impressive for a family friendly box.
its actually 1.34102hp = 1kW
Please repeat the test in dyno mode.
What car do you like better 3 or y?
No if RC Car logic applies then it is only important how much power your battery can discharge at a given time.
What's up with roll race at the end? Not a even go. Model y got the hit first. You can see the front end of the Y lift up first then like about less than a second later the 3's front end lifts. But then you see the 3 catching up at the top. Model 3 would obviously win in every roll race. Especially being lighter, better aero, smaller wheels. Still fun to watch your vids though. Keep it up👍🏽
I think also the electronic got more efficient
When are you uploading the Model S vs Taycan drag race video ? You said "coming soon" back in February Brooks, what is taking you so long ? Otherwise thanks for the content...
I doubt Porsche let him drag race a Tesla with the Taycan press cars he reviewed. They’re strict with that type of stuff. We’ll probably have to wait until they start delivering to actual owners.
Cuz #Corona
@@MindzEnt If you watch the Taycan drag strip video vom February, at the end he gave us a very short teaser of the Taycan and Model S standing side by side on a drag strip and launching...So he already did film the video, he literally just has to upload it, at least he could tell us why he can't upload it !
Edit...Proof that he already filmed it (teaser): czcams.com/video/y0XlXAn23Y8/video.html
@@AOTanoos22, yeah right, there was no launching and they were obviously at the wrong end of the dragstrip for a drag race.
@@jimwheeler6094 he cut the video right before they launched, what does it matter if it was the wrong side of the drag strip ? He said the drag strip was not prepped and slower at the beginning and at the end of the strip the tarmac was more sticky, he managed to record the best 0-60 time of the Taycan at that part of the drag strip, thats why he probably started from the other end in the Taycan vs Model S drag race. What matters is that both cars finally get raced on a straight line in the exact same conditions so we can finally see which car is faster.
Is there a lighter wheel on Y video yet??
Bumped
I did notice the MY has higher voltage under load, more voltage holds torque at higher rpm
Only true for early Y’s. Newer ones have the slower LG battery
Ok is that for all models of model y and 3 as standard models have different battery and y dual motor has then new 46 80 cells does the newer model 3 have the same, is this apples to apples?
The two cars might have the same exact power, but since the model Y is heavier, it can put down more power before spinning the tires. Remember the data you're seeing is the power the motors made after traction control. This would also make sense at higher speeds since the aerodynamic drag of the Y is larger, therefore requiring more power.
Neither car spins the tires...
@@DragTimes That would be because of traction control. I could be wrong though, just a theory...
Getting the cars on a dyno would rule out the weight and drag coefficient differences though. Would be interesting to see if you get the same result. Just need this pandemic to settle down...
So if all these telsas run about the same time the only difference is basicly the styling
With the Model 3. You should use this app and see if power is still going to a certain motor in track mode.
I did a few tests in different track mode settings, will report that in another video..
DragTimes awesome!
put the model 3 wheels on the y
itll go faster
model y wheels are suuuper heavy
I think they added it already to the 2020 Model 3s software unlock is coming for happy owners
What?
579 and 623 ponies....some good looking American muscle :p
What car do you prefer?
Notification Squad
I wonder who wins Model 3 LR Awd vs Model Y performance?
cobra2079 performance everytime. But awd+ the times are almost indentical
According to Munro's teardown, the motors are actually different from the 3 to the Y.
Who are the Three Stooges who chose to dislike an informative video? Smh.
It would be great if somebody can compare Tesla Model Y vs Porsche Cayenne S.
How many cars did this guy have???! 😵😱
We need the real world important numbers. 0-60 are cool but don't mean much for real world since in town you don't do max speed acceleration 99% of the time. 50mph roll for highway passing, 60mph roll for highway and freeway passing, and 70mph roll for Freeway passing is what's important as passing in a 2 lane matters more. So put a Model 3 Performance up against a M3, RS5 since we don't get the RS4 in the states, C63 AMG and such. 50 and 60 roll is more important then 70 as those are multi lane freeways.
Can you do some dragy and Vbox runs on some of your supercars like GT and Huracan?
It would be interesting to see the difference from dragstrip times with the same driver
data person🙋♂️
Does anyone know the true horsepower & torque figures for the model 3 performance (p3d)? Most places say 450 - 500 hp but this channel and some other sources say around 580 hp. What is the truth?!
ShizAudi 580 sounds like pure delusion. 500hp is definitely possible.
Did you watch the video? He showed it... there are other videos on actual hub dyno’s which concur the value he showed.
No he didnt. You can’t just add the power from front + back
Incredible you live 5 minutes from me :) Small world.
You sound like a guy from eastern Europe
@@orvvro I'm actually from Eastern Europe. But living here for a few months.
@@AndyPopescu your name looks Romanian...
@@cybermonk8580 yep
Very interesting, now the real question is: are all these upgrades coming over to the model 3? With the increase battery size, we might see M3 doing 350 EPA miles.
Please don't call the model 3 M3 :p
@@m3awd598 Ah yes, BMW.
I think you're underestimating the role of aerodynamic forces as you go faster. Aero is MUCH more important for high-speeds than mass is.
That's why the Y pulls nearly as hard as the 3 at the top end.
Not faulting you for makin' the vid, but that's what's going on.
the bigger car is more aerodynamic? and the added power doesn't mean anything? :)
wow cant wait for the futur. Roadster will be mental sub 9 1/4 mile
Model S will probably run sub 10 1/4 mile
and Model 3 will run 10s, the future is bright
Reginald Nance I’m pretty sure its happening
Reginald Nance He said deliveries will start in late 2020 and that was 2 years ago, stop being so desperate you sound like a low IQ imbecile.
I can’t wait to see the Plaid model s vs Taycan, it’s gonna be interesting.
@@MindzEnt plaid model s will destroy taycan. Taycan is already neck and neck with tesla. Both run 10.5 so...
@@AthletismeQc, to be perfectly fair, the best known quarter mile time for the Taycan Turbo S is 0.04 seconds quicker than the best known quarter mile time for the Model S Performance.
Where are all the new tuners. The game is evolving and it's going to take different skills
Any reason why they can’t put a 100kw/h battery pack in the Y? It’s not a small vehicle.
profit? ;)
To determine the battery size of each car: (Method used by Bjørn Nyland)
1. Charge both the M3 and the MY to 100%. Drive at constant speed on freeway up to 5%.
2. Using Google map and GPS location you can have a good measure of the distance, more precise than the car odometer.
3. Charger again each car to 100% and using a WattMetter read how much power was needed to got back to 100%.
4. The power you read on the wattMeter will include also the losses from the AC to DC converter inside the car.
You can estimate about 5 to 10% of losses, so deduct 5 to 10% and calculate the result for each car.
5. Now you have an estimate for 95% of battery capacity. To get the total value then multiply by 105%
6. Using the power used and the distance you can have a good estimate of the consumption
in Wh/Mile or Km and compare with the values given by Scan My Tesla
Note: The battery size is in fact the battery available, there is always a top and bottom buffer to protect the battery.
Brooks-I have two little kids. I want to get a 3 or a Y. Which would you favor?
I would go for the Y....
@@DragTimes THANKS, I APPRECIATE IT!
Would you buy a new Performance Y loaded at $70k or a used 2017/2018 Model S performance at $75k ???????!!!
Performance Y all day. Faster supercharging, better warranty, better autopilot, better MCU and so on..
S is outdated.
Your Android phone comes with a screen recorder you don't need to use on off the Play store
depends on which one
Tesla rządzi Y :D
Model Y has slightly different motors but more due to cost savings
Y has lower drag coefficient.
and higher drag
When uploading TAYCAN vs MODEL S ???
