- Why was this game never released in the US?
This came out somewhere the same time as Mortal Kombat & DOOM.
anyways, for those who don't know what Madou Monogatari is. It's a Dungeon Crawling first person RPG game made by Compile.
It's the main series from the popular puzzle game "Puyo Puyo".
It was first released as a prototype on the MSX2 in 1989, later got a full release in 1990.
Then came a more violent version on the PC-98 in 1991. which is the version you're seeing now.
what's really funny is the characters for this series would live on to be in the cutesy Puyo-Puyo series of puzzle games.
Madou was still cutesy as well except for the PC-98 version

@@megspitzer9406 I say that but in real life I don't know, if the Madou Monogatari continuity and the Puyo Puyo continuity and the same continuity, it's very vague (although personally I like to think it is).
However when Sega got the license rights back, they didn't get the plot rights back (for some reason) so he had to reset everything.

If I have understood correctly, in the first Madou Monogatari game Arle has to brave a tower full of monster and do what's shown in this video in order to graduate from *kindergarten.* I think that would also fall under "fucked up". (Disclaimer: I've not played Madou Monogatari games myself.)
This scares me as a fan of puyo puyo but it's still kinda interesting to see what they did back then.
Enix before Square bought Enix had some hentai games chainsawing young ladies. I wasn't wrong, Japanese companies are really brutal when it comes to their dark era, Temco (formerly Tekkhan), Koei, these two before making some Omega Force hack n slash games, made tons of hentai contents back in 80s too. Not to mention Gainax, which made Eva animes, got tons of experience making nude girls appear in graphic novel games. I might sound pretty like a nerd for knowing these 🤓

Well, this series was a precursor to the Puyo Puyo series, so of course the characters here would appear in Puyo Puyo.

The developer of Madou Monogatari 2 didn’t have PC-98 when he was young, so he always thought “only a few special adults would possess PC-98.”. That’s the reason why the Madou Monogatari 2 for PC-98 was brutual.
Though Its Obvious That They Were Accidentally Right As The PC-98 Is Mostly Used As A Workplace Computer And Most Of Its Games Were Eroge

Well, the Game Gear port of the games has their violence toned down, and they even got rid of the decapitation sequences, too
The PC98 version is just weirdly violent.
The original was light hearted, and so was the rest of the series. This was just an outlier

Arle and Schezo are the only characters in this series with a damn body count yet manage to still be the silliest of goobers, even in these games.

This level of gore was only in PC-98 version of the game (although game gear version did have a dead body being drained by schezo and arle having her finger bleedings)

It's interesting to hear people saying that this version of Madou Monogatari is dark in comparison to the Puyo Puyo series.
Just makes me think about the dark and oddly mature stuff that still got through in the spin-offs. Even if they're mild compared to on-screen decaptiation with blood, or a kindegartener watching her classmates melt in front of her, or Arle's fingers bleeding due to spamming spells (I don't even remember where I heard that one, let alone if that's what actually happened)...
It did. In Madou Monogatari 3 Arle spammed Ice Storm too much and got Frost Burn, so she had to get medicine for it.
The melting scene was an illusion by Sorcerot to scare Arle, but then the orbs she collected tell her it is only an illusion and they encourage her to never give up and keep fighting
Puyo Puyo is made for kids, but Madou Monogatari is made for teens.

Other versions of Madou Monogatari are kid friendly. Only the PC-98 version showed a more realistic design & blood/gore. I think I heard somewhere that the PC-98 was targeted to an older audience which probably explains why.
Puyo Puyo while also kid friendly, I've did notice some "Questionable" things in Puyo Puyo-Sun.

In the Madou Monogatari universe, Arle kills the creator of the universe, and Satan saves him and her and the others and brings them into the new world
Puyo Puyo is a spin off of this, and it never cared about story. That's actually one of its strengths, since the simple plots allow it to focus on humor.

@@PASTELXENON I'm not pretending, it really is what the franchise excels at. Puyo Puyo Sun has one of the simplest stories in the franchise, yet it's also seen as one of the best. Part of that is because the writers spend their time making each cutscene funny instead of focusing on the plot, because the plot's dumb. Schezo's story being the funniest to me not because of "haha pervert jokes",but because of his short fuse getting him into trouble. Compare this with Puyo Puyo 7, a game many consider to be one of the worst in the franchise. One of the reasons for that is because the game tries to tell a more conventional story, and does it poorly. The only enjoyable parts of the game's story to me was when it took a break from the bland, predictable mystery to focus on the character interactions. That's when the writing's good. The writers can do humor, they can do character interactions, they can do lore(when they feel like it), but they cannot do plot. That's why the best Puyo games from a writing perspective also have the simplest plots.
This is just the PC-98 version btw. The original MSX2 versions, as well as later versions, are much more tame by comparison.
Not to mention the melting faces.

I couldn't find the full playthrough either, just gameplay clips. But if you can get a hold of a PC-98 Emulator, you can play it yourself.
I think Tamer Koh has a full play through but I could be wrong. His channel is a goldmine for all things madou monogatari / puyo puyo

Only the PC-98 version is dark. The rest of the series is lighthearted. The MSX version of Madou Monogatari 123 (which is the first Madou Monogatari version) is also cheerful
If I’m correct, in Summer 2024 a new Madou Monogatari will be made with all the original characters returning by the original developers (Compile)
This is a huge deal, since SEGA bought the right to the characters, and now they have permission to use them again.
First time in nearly 30 years that we’ll get such a game

Give her some slack. She's been tortured by her school to go to a dungeon when she WAS STILL IN A KINDERGARTEN. If you come back alive after being thrown in a dungeon, ofc being brutal was one of the way for her to survive especially when she's in the same situation like what she experienced in kindergarten.

@@nikolap490Madou Monogatari 1-2-3 is a dungeon crawler RPG. The stats are intentionally hidden, and you can only rely on Arle’s expressions and phrases to determine your status. The series is just as lighthearted as Puyo Puyo, but this is just an outlier.
In Madou Monogatari 1, Arle has to find three orbs and exit the tower to graduate kindergarten
In Madou Monogatari 2, she is 16. She gets kidnapped by Schezo and has to get out. When she gets out she goes to another labyrinth to find the jewels, where she meets Satan aka The Dark Prince. This is the version she meets Carbuncle in
In Madou Monogatari 3, Rulue thinks Arle married Satan and gets jealous, so she sends Minatouros to chase her into an endless forest. When she gets out, her fingers have frostbite from using too much Ice Storm, but the ingredients are only in a place full of monsters

For those not in the know, the PC-98 edition of _Madō Monogatari 1·2·3_ looks as unsettling as it does is because, according to Yonemitsu's own blog, he assumed that PC-98 users were all adults at the time of the game's development and though grotesque representations of the enemies would be appealing to that demographic.

Madou Monogatari has been dead since 2005. they kinda tried to revive the series as "Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Great Curry God" but they've changed the characters & story a bit.

can anyone explain the difference between this and the mega drive remake?
Aside from the obvious design choices & the blood & gore. I think the major difference is that the PC-98 version is Turn-Based & you simply select spells through a list, while the Mega Drive version is Real-time & to do spells you have to memorize by holding I believe the A button & use the D-pad to perform a spell (like doing a cheat code).

@@alexkubrat3868 The Later PC-98 Models uses YM2608, earlier one's uses YM2203 which is just 3 FM Channels - Mono.
