I wont lie, when I started watching Bollywood movies, like a decade ago, I just kind of assumed that everyone in India knew how to do all the different styles of dance. Obviously now I know I was wrong. But, I do still love the idea of everyone just breaking out into song and dance when the mood hits them.
Trust me, bollywood style dancing is NOTHING like classical Indian dance styles like this.

Xter Min8 i meant the majority of what you see in movies which is just hip shaking and boob popping lol typical "look at me i'm sexy" choreography. there's very few classical numbers that come out that are actually pretty accurate. and i said bollywood style dancing which isn't classical dancing, classical is a style of it's own that's totally separate
+missatralissa Watch "kahe ched ched mohe from Devdas" or "mohe rang do laal from Bajirao mastani", these are the closest portrayal of kathak in recent times.
I LOVE bharatanatyam. I've grown up with it, And I've learned some from films and videos on youtube. I even made myself a costume! I wish I could go to india someday...chennai.

I've been learning Bharatanatyam for 10 years. I can safely say that it is one of the hardest sports ever. The dance they did in the video was mainly an "acting" piece for lack of a better word. Most are fast paced and straight up cardio. I've played basketball, soccer, ballet, and volleyball and honestly none of them compare to how tiring this dance form is.

jfd1617 well all classical dance teachers are supposed to be kinda of strict and sassy because all my bharatnatyam dance teachers were and yeah in my school it's compulsory to learn bharatnatyam yeah but my school S dance teacher is hella strict.

I went to high school with a lot of Indian girls and I loved when they would do dances for our talent show! I also saw one of their recitals once and it was beautiful, the costumes were so pretty too.
I've learnt Bharatnatyam for over 8 years now,but I still feel like it would take a lifetime to learn everything about it .

OMG i was such an expert at bharatanatyam when i was like 8 but its so annoying to memorize all the hand movements 😂😂 i quit after a few months ejdjdjekdkskd
I started in first grade and I've been doing it ever since :))
I only know 2 names of the hand movements: mushtee and pathaga 😂 I'm really bad at memorizing the names, but I can do the dance, I hope that makes up for it
I would absolutely LOVE to learn this artform style of dance. My hobby is performing in cultural shows and I have yet to try my hand at any Indian dances.

I grew up learning bharatanatyam, and I can tell you it's one of the hardest things I've ever done. But I realize now it was so worth it. It's a beautiful dance style, so full of emotion. A story can be painted with your body.

@Yash Salvi actually bhangra is a classical dance... lol. More like the folk dance of punjab tbh. Ofc it is a lot less intricate than south indian dances. The real bhangra needs to be learnt and is not limited to the crazy wedding dance.

I did Bharatanatyam for 6 years and hated it so much😂😂 it wasn't too bad it's jus all the effort and cardio put into it and I couldn't handle strict Indian choreographers... They are veracious 😂 glad I'm doing hip hop now

Is it considered okay for non-Indian people to learn and perform these dances? Is it maybe okay in some contexts but not in others? As a Latino person, I have no claim to this cultural expression, but I really like how it looks and just plain enjoy dances with this sort of detail-based complexity.
Yes of course it's okay for a non Indian To try this :) there's really no reason for you not to try this
But like don't say you created it and like don't say namaste and act like your a master at it .
There have been many very famous classical dancers from the west before not just bharatnatyam but also for other classical dance forms. This is art and anyone can learn it. As a person who has learnt a classical dance form I recommend it, it's fun :)
