- čas přidán 22. 03. 2020
- After a couple of delays I finally got around to stripping and rebuilding the front knuckles. Found some very damaged bearings along the way. Full clean up and paint of all the components on the front axle, and all torque setting and shims are measured for the build to get the steering setup correctly.
This rebuild covers 40,60,70,80 series Toyotas will be that same as most solid axle 4X4's
A Big thanks to all you guys who have supported me on my journey of sharing my 40 series build on CZcams.
All my tools and consumables are brought from ToolKing.

Great informative knuckle rebuild mate. Starting this tomorrow on my 78. Cheers - Prince Edward Island - Canada
That oil seal pulling pry bar is quite the multi tool
Yes, the pry bar is a great tool!
Excellent video, planning to do this on my 72 FJ40. I am glad that I found your site.
1970 fj 40 here
Great job - very well done. One point, when setting bearing preload, you can hold off on putting the cone washers in till you get it where you want it, then put the cones in and assemble properly. This way if you need to add/subtract shims from top and bottom, you don't have to screw around with the cones. Be sure to double check preload once the cones are in.
Mate, really good and informative video - great work 👍
Restoring a ‘76 FJ40. Your videos are the best.
Thanks mate! Feel free to share photos of your build. Have a fantastic Christmas!

Clear information great video!
Thank you
How about that shout out!!! Thanks brother, appreciate it!
You're always welcome mate, sharing the love😋
Project wrong way.. another awesome channel!
Excellent, thorough detail. You made it look easy. Thank you.
I dont have an oil seal puller but found that a medium side shifter had about the right arc angle to do the same job. Super simple.
Mate, you're a legend. You go through the steps and that's such a tremendous bonus. Thank you
Super cool work on the video perspective! Gotta love the camera tripod! Thanks
Thanks James.
Howdy from Virginia! Bought my first FJ 40 today. A 1977 that needs tons of work. Thanks for all the great videos. I know they’ll come in handy when I start my project.
Congraulations Mate! welcome to the 40 series Family. Mine is also a 1977 so I hope that mine channel helps you throughout your build!
@@40ChannelCruiser Thanks, Brother. If you ever make it to the USA beers are on me. :) FYI--these guys are about 40 minutes away from me here in Virginia. Good guys with lots of Land Cruiser know how if you ever have a question. Some good videos on their site: www.otramm.com
Thanks for the video and the valuable information too ✌
This is outstanding news. You not only have 711s down unda, you know the value of the SLURPEE. 40s and Slurpees are a solid combo
My kids are the big Fans of the Slurpee's and if I'm buying them on then I had better get one too!😉
cheers mate great video, found your comment whilst searching for a kit for my 1992 ln106. I'm now ready to take it head on!
I can't believe you have 7/11's there, awesome. I hate dealing with the shims, pulling them in and out and checking to get the weight right
Best results using swivel hub centering gauge tool now available as aftermarket special service tool.
Metal to metal surfaces do not seal . Any metal cased seals should be installed to oil grease free metal housings with a sealing compound for interference fits. (Not rubbish silicone sealer)
This includes wheel bearing hub seals . Oil from grease leaks out . Metal to metal does not seal also usually gouges from screwdrivers etc during seal removal , metal cased seals can't seal the gap , oil leakage path.
Swivel hub studs can be removed ( double nut them ) from housing and studs washed oil grease free install studs with thread locker , it will seal and stop the greases oil from dripping out . Dummy fit trunnion bearings and use centre gauge to check hub centered on axle housing and check preload , make any adjustments for correct centre and preload , when correct dismantle and clean shims , swivel hub shim surface and trunnion surface apply Loctite master gasket to shims , swivel hub , trunnion mating surfaces by doing this greases oil will not leak out of metal to metal surfaces .
It's the little bit extra on the job that makes a massive difference to longevity of a repair or overhaul. Inner axle shaft Seals need to be installed to oil free housing with retaining compound or gear oil leaks in . Cv shaft must be centred in housing , great care must be used when installing axle shaft into inner axle shaft seal or it will be damaged from the Start . Bit of a ordinary design the inner axle shaft seal anyhow .
Vent axle housing and transmissions to atmosphere using extended breather hoses up to high in engine bay , internal pressure from stuck breathers causes forceful leaks.
Long live the 40 .
Thanks for the great video
Superb! This project is coming soon for me so your timing is impeccable. I'm headed to amazon to get a luggage scale.
Thank’s for making these videos, very helpful.👍
Great video buddy!
Thanks mate, I appreciative your support!
Your the legend
Wonderful info...super helpful. Keep up the great work. Going to use your comments on rebuilding the front end on my 78 fj40. Thx again.
cheers mate I'm about to do the same stuff to my 1970 FJ 45 ive got the front diff out only took 3days lol never done anything like this before never had a 4x4 Toyota this one is a night mare and I don't have half the tool, sor money as I'm older much older than the ute andam a pentioner. But I,ll get it done some how thanks for your tips
Great to hear that your going to get it done no matter what, Never to old to learn new tricks! Good on ya Doug
Great video, but I'm wondering about the knuckle preload. The workshop manual for my BJ46 recommends 1,8-3,8 kg. Not 3-6 kg as mentioned in the video. That is far too much in my opinion.
Another observation is that the the gasket next to the dust cover is on the outside of the cover, not on the inside between the dust shield and the knuckle spindle.
*Great Video!!*
Thanks for your support mate.
First comment and first like. glad you found that bad bearing. I used a trunnion bearing eliminator on that Blue 75 I built just for that reason. Those bearings don't like bigger tires
You are quick of the mark mate, Yes when I brought the FJ40 it was on 33" But as you know I have gone with the original rims. I like the look of them better for this project.
Great video man thanks for the video I did it to my hj45 is fun to work on Toyota’s lc thanks I always see your videos great again this cars are expensive to restore but well worsted sheer
Thanks
oh the old fordeen mill...
Great Video, Man. Very in depth and helpful. So glad you are doing this!
when you finished this one
I reserve you a plane ticket for France
I have my BJ42 which needs a good renov
Lock it in mate!
@@40ChannelCruiser he is already locked up
You forgot to install the last baring mate
Hi 40 channel, im pretty sure your meant to pack the felt seal with grease as well otherwise it acts as a sponge and holds water.
Living the dream
the top cone in it will not go down more than a half the distance it needs to go down this just a little over finger tight at that point you can not move the knuckle i have check the bearing is down in the race way and looks like it is sitting up as far as yours is any help would be great .
Feel free to send me a photo.

Really like the video. Just had a quick question with setting the preload on the knuckle. If it's either too tight or too loose and you have to remove or add shims, do you find that it is always best to do it on the bottom? Or should you try to do it at the top as well?
what's that chassis sprayed with looks mighty fine! would love to hear what you've used!
👏🙏🌹
Thank you.
Great video again Jayson! Man you know a lot about these rebuilds. Have you done them before?
Thanks Dave, This is the first 40 series Landcruiser I have done, But not the Last! I have built a number of thing in the past. There is lots of great info on the Book of Face forums and IH8MUD, that has been a great info guide.
Why did you not changed the brass bushings? Did you measured them? Good video despite of that. 🙂
Thanks Matt, I did buy two new brass bushes but the ones in the hub looked good, no damage or scoring at all. So I left them in.
question, did you use moly grease? I thought that would be the wrong type for wheel bearings.
Where whould i find the luggage scale you used?
What did you do at 24:26 to get the axle past that point. I’m fighting mine at the same spot. Thanks!
Can I ask what you did to finally get the axle to go in to the diff centre? That bit was cut out and mine are being a pain in the butt after doing the knuckle rebuild. Thanks mate.
Where i can get this knuckle steering housing for FJ40
what brand are those ratcheting spanners
G'day Mate the brand is called 'King Tony'

Hello and good morning, I'm having 1984 Bj 41. My bjs hand break light is not functioning. There is no wire connecting the hand break with bulb if possible plz share the pic or guide me with what to do. Thanks
Send me an email, I try and help 4045channel@gmail.com
@@40ChannelCruiser hi, waiting for your email
@@duldul5038 sorry mate, I haven't received an email. Maybe try again.

Hey. Absolutely love the channel. Got a question. Where about do you get all your gaskets from??
Hi mate, from onlineautoparts.com.au
struggling get that CV joint back in as you were. Any tips? What were you facing and how did you overcome it? Seems to be bottoming out somewhere.
Hi Steven, I ended up Turning the center of the diff a bit and tapped the end with a dead blow hammer and just popped straight in.
@@40ChannelCruiser Got it, thanks mate. I ended up juggling it a bit and turning diff slightly and it worked. appreciate it and all the great details you've provided. Cheers!
Hey really good video! I want to do this to my fj40 from 1979, can you share where to buy this kit from the internet?
HI Juan, yes you can buy the kit from onlineautoparts.com.au
Vid only shows you removing shims from the bottom - should remove equal top and bottom to keep the axle centred?
I was thinking the same thing. I'm about to attempt this and I'm gonna get the little scale. But I would have thought remove them equally from top and bottom.
boxmat182ify, make sure you get a mechanical scale and not a digital one.
Yeah I can do that, how come though?? What's your reasoning?? Thanks!
boxmat182ify, a mechanical one is easy to read when the measurement isn’t constant.
The digital ones jump around a bit due to the averaging etc.
Think of standing on a mechanical scale vs an electronic one - mechanical is instant but electronic takes a second or two to show the value.
Mate where did you get your knuckle kit from?
Hi Wayne, brought from onlineautoparts.com.au
Complete novice here! How come you knew to remove the bottom shims and not the top shims?
Hi Will, there is a OEM tool that you can use to find the center and can adjust the shims to suit. But if you don't own the tool I set it up so there is about the same shim thickness top and bottom, so in this case there was more on the bottom which is why I removed them. Hope this makes sense.
Hey! You skipped how you got the axle in! I’m out in my shop doing the same thing right now watching specifically for that moment! Mine is stuck in the same spot. Did you just keep wiggling and pushing? Thanks...
Never mind! Struggle with that dang thing for 30 minutes. Walked away and came back 15 minutes later after I calmed down. Went right in. I have no idea what I did different. Sometimes these things are so frustrating! Anyway it’s party time now. 🎉🎉
@@estein63 🤣 Yep same thing, I was fighting it and was getting a bit frustrated so turn off the camera and then in just popped in🤨 The other side went in very easy but didn't film that side. That's the way it seems to go!
Maybe it would help to turn a pinion flange just a bit that the splines match...?
@@ToyotaLandCruiser Don't worry I was trying that too! (Off camera)
40 Channel yep, me too. Then all of a sudden it just slid in....wish I knew. Still have the other side to go!
