Thank you!
The self control required to make two entire videos on the oscillators showing huge timbral variety without reaching for the filter cutoff *just* to see how it would sound :) Great stuff as always Marc, a lot of clever thought and design has gone into this synth. Re. your recent facebook post: I despair at people coming to a synthesiser enthusiast youtube channel and then complaining about the enthusiasm displayed by said enthusiast. Please enthuse on, there are enough soul-less feature walkthroughs on the internet for those who prefer their videos to be less emotional.
Korg should by paying you for this Marc ,seriously!
Well, you should tell them that! Not because I think they should, but because I want them to know that what I do inspires people to think that! Thank you!
+AutomaticGainsay - well it's hella better than anything they have put together, why SHOULDN'T they pay you??!
What I love about Marc's videos is you feel the enthusiasm he puts in, it makes me just as excited as he is
If I wasn´t psyched about the minilogue before, well I´m getting there now because of these videos Marc. Great work as usual!
+Johan Toverland Thank you!
+AutomaticGainsay You really demonstrated something about this that I hadn't even really thought about before, which is that a lot of these osc functions just don't exist on other polys, especially all together at once.
People have been gobsmacked by this synth-myself included-but I think most of us looked at all of the modulations of the oscs and weren't surprised because we've seen most of them on *mono* synths... But you really just showed us how insane it can all get.
That being said, the "shape" function on the saw and triangle is a relatively new feature for analog or analog-modelling synthesis (as far as I know, anyway), and we should all be excited for those new waveforms alone.
Thanks for the videos, make sure to go in-depth about the filter clicking, and whether or not it ruins the synth for you ;)
Hey, thank you very much!
I kind of demonstrate the clicking in the filter video... but I sort of find it to be a non-issue. The problem isn't that it exists, the problem would be that it was irritating or interfered with normal function. Certainly, it is notable because it is unexpected... but it can be so easily addressed. To be honest, I've actually used it as an attack transient in sounds. I don't have a problem with it.
And, I know... some might accuse me of making excuses for it... but I'm not. This synth does so much so well and is so interesting and SO inexpensive... a weird quirk like this just doesn't really matter in this case.
*****
From what I've heard I liked it as a transient on the attack, too. My only complaint has been when I can hear it on the release, because that can land in weird off-time moments, and I can imagine it being a bitch to edit out of recordings. But that's hardly an issue for me either; In most cases it should be fine to just turn the release up the release a little.
Just got a minilouge yesterday. Thanks for the great video. Really expands my horizons.
i just got a minilogue for my birthday so im watching this tutorial at work and youre getting me excited to go home and mess with it
Awesome review!! - Markus Fuller did a teardown of a brand new minilogue and was quite impressed with the built quality of it, and now this series of qualified and thorough knob for knob walkthrough - You're the man, man!! Awesome just reached a new level!
"isn't it cool when cool sounding sounds also look cool?!"
Absolutly , and your reviews are always a great source for inspiration!
lovely detuned and sync& especially ring mod sounds! GREAT!
Marc, many thanks for reviewing/demoing this synth so quickly after its initial release. I only learned about this synth one week ago and today I brought it home. I am so blown away by what Korg has accomplished with this synth, I am immediately connecting to it like a new girlfriend. It shimmers and fuzzes. Looking forward to the rest of the videos in this series. Again, many thanks!
Whoa - for some reason it never occurred to me how useful that Pitch EG knob is! I've been lamenting the lack of ability to assign LFO to the pitch of just a single OSC, but that kind of makes up for it. Awesome. Keep 'em coming!
Oh my goodness. I haven't really followed much synthesizer news for a year or two, so your videos are the first I've heard of this synth, and it sounds heavenly.
Wow...really impressed with it, especially that pad/string thing you did at then end...all without filters. Yep, will have to get one.
This is an extraordinary demo. If I didn't already have one of these I would've hit 'pause' and gone out to find one ASAP. As it stands now, I'll be revisiting all of these with the Minilogue by my side. The amount of time and the deep amount of knowledge you're sharing here is really commendable.
Thank you very much!
Awesome stuff, always enjoy your r̶e̶v̶i̶e̶w̶s̶ demonstrations.
Thanks Mark, for a well thought out, and detailed review of this new synth's many capabilities!!!
Your reviews are FANTASTIC! I'm new into the world of synths (analog OR digital), and I'm using your videos as tutorials as much as reviews. Hoping that my reviews are as helpful to people! Thanks!
Thank you very much!
Nice walkthrough. On the surface, the Minilogue doesn't seem to have a lot of its own character, but you're right: once you get into some of the funkier stuff, it does things the classics just don't. I've enjoyed mine.
Indeed. That's what makes analog synthesis so awesome!
Marc, thank you for this. I am a brand new owner of this, and am new to synthesis. This series is just an awesome demo of what you can do. I love the display of passion in this!
Thank you so much, and thanks for watching! I am glad to help in any way I can.
See? Less irritating flashing! It's gone by the next video!
FORGIVE MEEEEE
+AutomaticGainsay XD
+inthefade But what about those of us that wanted MORE flashing!? You'll never satisfy the CZcams comments, Marc. And we'll haunt your dreams.
+AutomaticGainsay its better! :D
+inthefade To be honest, I often just disregard them... but there seemed to be a unified and pissed off majority in regard to this one! :D
+AutomaticGainsay Hehehe
The quality of your reviews/demos will always grant you forgiveness. But THANK YOU very, very much for not making me trip with the flashing background/foreground. :D
Now on to more important matters: I love the way the sound morphs from chaos into a very musical shape using the VCO2 mod: there is a lot of potential just in that little collection of knobs and switches... I can only imagine how it will be when we start using the LFO and the motion sequence on those. Btw, can the minilogue do the same trick Nick Batt shown for the Volca Keys, were you can have the sequencer only with Motion data (no notes) and play the notes freely?
Cheers!
Your vids were so helpful for getting the most out of my minilogue. Your the best!
best synth ever made , simple yet complex and polyphonic .
An amazing amount of top quality work as always Marc, really appreciate all the time you put into things. A great watch that's certainly got me wanting one! :)
Agreed! It's got me wanting one too!
I love this synth. Am glad you love it too.
Wicked vids man.. just picked up my Minilogue the other week and sitting down to it now.. your vids are really helping me, bigupzzz!
This video is awesome. Looking forward to the other parts. Thanks!
Looking forward to the rest of this series Marc! These last two vids have been great and you haven't even touched the filter or sequencer yet. Or the different modes. Love it!
some of those complex oscillator functions remind me of patches I've made on some of my Waldorf synths! that's crazy!
+AJ Gapsquez I know, right? Really unique for an analog.
I'm gonna be using this in conjunction with both my Waldorf synths and I can't wait. I'm sure they'll compliment those 2, my ms20 and microbrute very well. So stoked for this. What other synthesizers are in your collection, friend?
Brilliant man!!! Got my self a minilogue and together with my mother 32 gonna fly high.
Excellent!
wow you really opened up this synth for me!
i was going to get a monologue but i must say I'm glad i went with the mini, basically because of the AM/FM or what ever. The cross modulation is what sold me on the mini, also because of the polyphonic voices :D you can make some crazy reese basses with this beast
Korg has quite a knack for creating machines with unique character. I'm not exactly sure why, but I kept thinking of the Radius while watching this. Maybe it's the combination of the sleek design and huge timbrel palette. Nevertheless, once again, Korg knows how to get me to buy their products: offer a powerfully unique sound at a crazy low price point.
Pure genius. (And getting someone like Marc Doty to showcase and highlight you product really helps, too).
The main issue for me on the vid and on my minilogue : can’t see where the damn knobs actually are. It’s just black !
Marc, I'm so grateful to you for doing this series on the Minilogue! I just bought a used one on eBay! I'm so looking forward to coming back to your videos when I have the real thing in front of me! I will certainly be making a donation soon for sure! It would be great if you did some patches and sequences for it? I'd certainly purchase them for sure and I'm sure many others would also! Thanks again!
super useful series, thanks so much
I know you are not selling me this synth, but you just sold me this synth :P
The shapeable oscillators on my Nord Modular G2 are my favorite. To finally see this feature in a true analog synth is exciting.
Moogs do that since the Voyager came out, some 15 years ago.
Moog had shapeable oscillators when the Micromoog came out about 40 years ago. Still a great feature, though. And this takes wave shaping to a whole new level.
awesome video
Great to see Korg build a synth with full size keys like the ARP Odyssey FS, My order is now in and i hope they do the same with the MS20 and the Monologue. I will buy them all.
mmm, future classic?
Thank you for this video. Finally I got to hear it "for real"!
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
question, what does the EG release do in term of creating the transition sounds?
great video . thanks
Shit!
TAKE MY MONEY.
There goes ANOTHER 500!
Great Video.
Very helpful! thank you
Another excellent video! It just occurred to me.. Korg should make the oscillator pair (with Ring mod and mixer) available in Euro-rack format.. it would sell really well!
+Nicholas Bryant I think so too, surely Eurorack has to be a future move from Korg.
I, for the life of me, can not get into the eruorack form of synthesis. All the gear I own has keys, lots of knobs and pits, and it's easily accessible to me for live performance and jamming. What could you tell me to sell me a eruorack synth? Not being sarcastic, I'm really interested.
Eurorack. Damn autocorrect.
Modular synthesis (in general, not just euro..) is certainly, by definition, open ended.. you need another LFO for your patch.. so you add one. The live side is a little harder to 'sell' as it takes time to get a sound 'just right'. I agree that a fixed architecture is easier to use live (have plenty of experience there!), I guess a software modular and MIDI controllers is the best of both worlds!
:)
Nicholas Bryant I appreciate you replying so soon. See, this is my set up: Korg ms20 mini, Korg minilogue, Korg volca series, Waldorf striechfett and blofeld, and arturia microbrute. I've gotten into the basics of modular synthesis from my ms20, but I don't understand the appeal of having the majority of my set up based upon that. Personally, I would not find it inspiring. But different strokes. Thanks for the input :)
Loved it again Marc :) Thanks! Up next after you're done, the Prophet 12? (Loved your Pro 2 rendition.)
I thought this was a fine demo! Why would anyone give it a thumbs down?
the scope would be great to show what a hard synced oscillator looks like. (turn sync on and mute osc 1) just a thought...
Stop making me want one! I have enough synthesizers as it is!
Best ones you got?
oh my goodnes, love your videos (my wallet doesn't) waiting for your filter section take! kudos from colombia!
Hey, quick question. When i plug my headphones directly into the headphone jack, the volume is extremely low. I would love to be able to play independant of my computer and studio monitors, but it is not loud enough to be enjoyable/especially useful. Master volume is all the way up, I have tried editing program level and have used multiple headphones. Any insight?
Sounds like they went with Linear cross modulation instead of exponential... Strange move considering its a musical Poly synth.
Marc could you please check and address the envelope click (thump) issue when you review the filter/amp . People complain about it and that's a huge deal breaker. thanks !
+Alphacode I do kind of touch on it, but for me it's kind of a non-issue.
Of course, it's not "supposed to be there," but it's not annoying. Even if it was, it's easily erased by changing envelope settings. As I've said elsewhere, I've even sort of embraced it as an attack transient!
I would love to see you do the matrix brute at some point :D
I'd love to own one at some point. But I've a bad feeling it's gonna be too far out of my price range.
Can the scope be tuned? (For those of us who are mostly tone deaf? I'm asking for a friend.)
are you going to publish the theme for this synth?
sorry for asking this but im a noobie! What is "cross mod depth" "pitch eg int" "sync" and "ring"? i mean, which is their function?
Thank you very much
Hey, Franco!
No, that's what I'm here for!
"Cross mod," or cross modulation, is where one audio-range oscillator is used to modulate another audio-range oscillator. An LFO is a much slower oscillator that makes very slow modulation changes in the frequency of an audible oscillator, but an audible oscillator can also be used as a very fast modulator. That's what's happening here... one of the oscillators is modulating the other, and the "depth" knob is just the amount of that modulation. It results in very buzzy sounds.
"pitch eg int" is short for "pitch envelope intensity." It controls how much the envelope affects the pitch of the oscillator over time.
"Sync" is undoubtedly explained in one of these videos, but I'll tell you anyway. :D Sync is when one oscillator's waveform is forced to reset every time the other oscillator's waveform resets. It creates a very unique audio effect when the "forced" oscillator's pitch is changed.
"Ring" is a ring modulator. It is a unique (and historically important) audio effect generated by the sum and differences of the harmonics present in two different audio sources... in this case, the oscillators.
I hope this helps!
i didnt understand what sync does
If anyone's reading the comments in 2024:
Can someone explain cross modulation in more depth? People say, like in this video, that it means one oscillator modulates the other (like an LFO). But I never understand which oscillator is modulating which. Are they both modulating...each other? (Is that even possible?) Does the second oscillator modulate the first?
Ok ok, read another thread somewhere, and the output of oscillator 1 modulates the pitch of oscillator 2. I'm assuming the "strength" of the modulation means that when you're only using only a tiny bit of cross-modulation, it essentially sends a "mini" version of its waveshape to oscillator 2...? And that waveshape grows to its full amplitude or whatever as you turn the knob to the right.
"Some of these sounds remind me of DX7 sounds."
Great. Now someone's going to recreate the DX Rhodes on this and then it'll be ten more years of DX Rhodes saturating popular music. lol.
how many sinks?
So cross mod is basically watered-down FM?
Cross Mod is the situation where one audio-range oscillator modulates another. It is frequency modulation in the same way that an LFO applied to an oscillator is frequency modulation. But FM synthesis is a little more complicated than that.
What do you mean I have a watered-down brain. I know that cross mod is FM now.
8:18 Holy Cow.
Holy crap dude. I've looked at a few demos of this thing, and I wanted it from the moment I saw the first anouncement, but after this, I'm actually considering selling gear just to be able to buy this quicker. I can't go another month without one. I just can't. Anybody from the Netherlands or nearby interested in a Waldorf Micro Q for 300 euros?
+gladtobeangry I'm glad to help. I hope that's a good thing. :D
I'd like to say thanks, although you're helping me becoming a poor man fast. :-) Love your vids though, and your contributions to the sonic talk podcast of course. Keep up the good work. Us bedroom knob twiddlers (hmm,,, that sounds... wrong) need reviews and demos from people who actually know what we need to know about a machine.
Amazing videos! Korg should pay you or something :D
Just saying...
Thanks! ;)
Very rich.
But of coarse you'd get blasted for not being independent!
"Reminds me of a DX7." Ya think? Why would that be? Maybe because you're doing FM. Was that too much sarcasm or just enough?
+Reginald Mizer The modulation of frequency is not the same thing as FM synthesis. You know that, right?
+AutomaticGainsay Why? Because FM is actually accomplished via phase modulation? I think I'm missing something here. But if that's what you're saying, true frequency modulation and phase modulation works out to be the same effect.
+AutomaticGainsay BTDubs. I was really just kidding with that first comment. Im not trying to shit on your synth knowledge, which I bow to as superior to mine.
Messing around is cool, but would not call all these vids « tutorial ». Not step by step enough IMO
