My theory is:
Just like the 'It Ain't Me' video, this video changes our perception of the song. When we hear "We were lovers for the first time", we instantly think a couple, but they're actually referring to siblings who were best friends.
Notice how the lyrics says "WE were young, but now I'M older"? She was the older sister who took care good care of him, but after she died, he remained stuck in the past (hence why it's not 'we're older').
Her spirit watches him from a distance. He doesn't know how to do things on his own. He relied on her so much. If you look closely, as she starts to die, his hands start to go on fire showing that her guiding hands are no longer there with him, and he's left to learn on his own.
As we see him try to live, the fire keeps consuming him. He misses her dearly but feels he can't do things on his own. This is why we see him struggling, and why we see him trying to make memorable items with the ashes.
Every time he 'dies' (not actually, but symbolic of a mental breakdown and wanting to just give up completely)... he gets back up again and 'does it all again' and he gets stronger each time. This is why you can see ash outlines of him all over the place on the floor from the many times he's given up, but got up and tried again.
We then see him older and he's finally able to play the piano. We can see the flames on his hands have stopped... he's at peace and he's stronger. Instead of consuming himself in the memories, he's living his life with the people currently in his life (his Mom in the car, his friends in the field, his crush on the bridge, etc.) all while keeping his memories of his sister. Making her proud. He's finally at peace with himself, and this is why we see him in the field of flowers like her.
The moral of the story is no matter how stormy and rough life gets, get up and keep trying... Don't lose hope. :)

The story I think: Kygo and Ellie are brothers and sisters, but the sister was diagnosed with a deadly disease and she died. As it spreads across his body, his grief grows and he makes relics in order to remember a time when he was with his sister. This is him coping with her dead and his stages of grief. Finally when the fire consumes him and he is nothing but ashes, he can be born anew.

Allison Rederick I have a couple questions for you if you don't mind answering about the video concept and meaning.
Yeah totally! Matthew left a lot of the plot up to our perception, but here is what I was told. I'm Kygo's sister, but I die from cancer when he was a child. Because of the pain, he begins burning from the inside out. He creates sculptures based off of things I taught him when I was around. He eventually burns himself up. Matthew wanted to leave the role Ellie plays up to our imaginations. However, he did hint that she could be playing our deceased mother, me as a spirit, or death itself. Art is really up to the viewers perception!
This song is about Ellie Goulding reminiscing about a past lover/ friend/companion who passed away.
This can be inferred by the " WE were young ,now I'M OLDER" Here it implies that the singer's lover is gone and will not age and experience the world like her- so she reminisce about their past days.

EDIT (to those bringing up the lyrics in my comments): I just wanted to come back here and say that I am basing this on my interpretation of the video itself and not on the lyrics as they are two different things. Sometimes artists make music videos that are completely unrelated to the lyrics so yeah she might have said lovers in the lyrics but it doesn't necessarily mean that they thus HAVE to be lovers in the music video. From what I see, it makes more sense to interpret them as siblings when looking at the visuals in the video

at 0:32 is when kygo was young, 0:36 is when his sister was teaching him the piano, 0:44 is when he finds out his sister is obviously sick and dying, 0:54 is when he realizes he has this ability to conjure fire with his anger and sadness, at 1:15 he starts dreaming he is dying by burning up and at 1:22 he is in a heaven (or what ever you believe in after you die) he wakes up and lives on longer, 1:29 is the next part of his life when hes a older teenager, 1:44 he has a fight and it brings back his anger and sadness and thinks he kills himself by dying of his fire, 1:52 is where he is again back in that place (where ever you go when you die) 2:01 is the next era in his life, 2:04 is where the boat is meaning he wanted to travel with his sister, and from there on it shows his past and future life to wheres back at that place where you die, he was alone cause it was only him and his sister and dad, his dad died and all his sadness and anger comes back and he couldnt deal with it so he ends up dying, plot twist his sister didnt die but it was too late
