  • Should I do an MFA in creative writing? Should YOU do an MFA in creative writing? What do you do if you aren't sure how to pick a masters degree?
Well friends, I'm going to graduate school! Actually, by the time this has posted, I'll have already started ;). I've been asking myself the question, "Should I do an MFA?" for about five years now, and I wanted to talk about why I'm NOT going to be studying creative writing at uni (because doesn't an MFA sounds like such a lovely idea?? Why would I not?). Instead, I'm doing a mental health counseling master's, and am excited about discovering the ways it will complement my current work and my writing!
If you're wondering how to study creative writing outside of school or how to decide what masters to do, I hope this video will give you a few things to think about.

    How do you study writing?

Thank you for this! Hope your master’s degree journey is going well. I also studied English in undergrad. Then I got a master’s in public administration. I now do SEO copywriting for a public university. They pay well and have great benefits like getting reduced tuition, so their MFA in CW is calling my name. But I can always just sit outside a cafe on campus and write without being in a program, so there’s that too! Thank you for going over the pros and cons in such a clear way. I appreciate you!

That's awesome! You still get the campus feel without having to be in class ;) - not bad at all! But the MFA does have a strong allure... :) Thanks for sharing, and I appreciate you as well!

Thank you for sharing! I also majored in English and Creative Writing. I considered the MFA as well, but as you mentioned, it’s an investment in time and money. And our time is valuable. I wanted a way to help people and decided to study for the life coach certification. We can enter various industries with a communication background.
With an MFA, I considered being a college instructor; however adjuncts have low salaries, and the path does not guarantee full tenure. Math is another passion of mine, so I decided on a master’s in data analytics to become a data scientist.

Oh very cool! We've had similar journeys it seems 😊. I still feel the itch to study writing now and then, but there are so many ways to do it without necessarily committing to an MFA

I also wanted to add, I do miss being a creative writing student. Going back to the freshman years when reading TGE BLACK CAT and THE YELLOW WALLPAPER, were two of my favorite short stories. Also had opportunities to write psychoanalysis essays on King Lear and Hamlet. I also literary theory. Yes, sitting in a cafe reading a great book or writing a piece of our own sounds joyous! I’ve been learning French for a while, and I imagine myself sitting outside a cafe in Paris reading French literature. Congrats on your masters and wish you all the best!

Congrats on grad school! IDK if I'll ever go to grad school; if I did, it'd be for an MFA in Creative Writing. Right now, I have all the time in the world to write and I started a tri-state writers group which has been going strong for the past couple of years. I can't really justify the costs of grad school since I'd likely keep doing what I'm doing now anyhow.

Thank you! An MFA is a dreamy option ^.^ It sounds like you have the most important element (a writing community) established in your life already, so that's awesome! Definitely does make it more difficult to justify the costs haha. Keep writing! :)

You would be very fun to hang out with, or to use as inspiration for a lot of fun story characters. I wish we’d known each other in undergrad.
