    Thank you so much for your advice and this video. It’s kind of crazy because everything you you went through is what I’m going through. I just graduated with a B.A in English Lit and I have no idea what I want to do for work. I want to write books for a living but you know that’s incredibly impossible to do so I wanted to find a job to support myself while I write. No luck there so far, so I decided to apply for a MFA in creative writing and NYU is one of my choices (luckily I already live in nyc). Similar to your situation, my mother was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer last year so I had to delay my process for a bit while she got her treatment. Her recovery is going great but it’s still up in the air. I’m grateful for your advice because it made me think more about my future and what I want to do. I think I’m still going to go forward with the MFA (my mom really wants me to lol)

      Oh my goodness, thank you so much for sharing this! It seems like you’ve put a lot of thought into your decision, which is the best route to take. I’m sending positive thoughts your way for both you and your mom.
      The great thing about an MFA is that it’s very different from other “academic” and research focused degrees. You can always get a second masters or a doctoral degree later on if you realize that’s what you want to do.
      Best of luck!!

    This is a great rundown. Solid. I've been to college 1.25 times. Grad school is not for me lol.
    But it's great to hear from someone who has had a positive experience. I've heard a lot of mixed responses. Though I will say the people who have been able to pay off their loans have been more positive, and congrats to you on that!
    This is a hell of a time for networking though isn't it? Smart to get creative with CZcams these days.

    Thank you so much for this video. I'm actually drowning in all the information you've got to take into account before seriously considering applying for a MFA, specially since I'm not an US citizen, and this video is by far the most complete review of the whole thing. @ShellyflowersReadsandWrites  Pƙed 3 lety +1

      I applied over 10 years ago, so I’m not sure how helpful my advice would be, but I’d say, focus primarily on your Writing portfolio. Make sure it’s a strong presentation of your point of view as a writer. I’d also say, get recommendations from professors or writers in the industry when possible.

    • @ShellyflowersReadsandWrites
      @ShellyflowersReadsandWrites  Pƙed rokem +2

      It is, however like I was saying in the video, prestige only goes so far. It’s really more about your ability to network and your ability to make community. There are people who have no MFA who are much more successful in their career than I am. So don’t let the fancy name for you. Still takes a lot of work no matter where you get your degree from.

  • @eddieibarra356
    @eddieibarra356 Pƙed 5 měsĂci

    To start an MFA is a terminal degreee meaning that is highest degree someone could complete. Second normally when someone is completing an MFA one of the goals is to teach at a university, third it is wisely to apply for a scholarship and work as a Graduate TA or try to apply to a university that is not astronomical expenses, and a university that is "less" expensive. By the way I am interested to apply an MFA either in Film making or Photography so I could teach film and photography at a university level.
