The heart of the cards is the belief that a duelist connects on a spiritual level with their dueling deck, and because of that connection and trust, the deck will come through for its duelist in the most critical situations.
While many a-duelist have shouted "heart of the cards!" as they try to topdeck their way out of a dire situation (success rates varying), what if there was an entire deck based on the premise of calling forth the right card at the right time?

Loved Grandpa’s deck, and it’s cool seeing all these classic Duelist Kingdom cards getting retrains. I think the theme of making the “Heart of the Cards” a genuine game mechanic is awesome. Really enjoyed this video, and appreciate all the thought you put into each of the cards.
Appreciate you watching!
@@customcardguyso the fusions aren’t on dueling book
We are currently rewatching the anime and picked up modern yugioh. This hits the right spot - modernized enough to be playable but true to the original cards. I love it.
Similar to Shining Sarcophagus archetype, and i love it
I've been thinking about play testing them as a proxy deck
Its funny too cause I remember an episode where Yugi used mystical elf to boost a monsters atk stat and thinking “hes cheating !! She dont do that” little did I know he already possessed these cards lol
Gotta love good ol’ Louise.
Fun fact about the Gaia the knight of the heart he is based on the trope of brave knights who would protect the people that they care about from harm witch is a sign of loyalty to their friends and families and their kingdoms who they serve to protect by putting their own lives on the line to keep their precious people safe
this is a really cool idea for retrains for these early set cards
❤❤❤ I loved the creatively . The deck came out better then I expected from the preview
Here is a Link Boss Monster
Black Luster Soldier:Guardian of the heart
Link 4 monster
Attack:3000
2+ Monsters with different names
This card cannot be destroyed by battle or card effects. Once per turn you can draw one extra card from your deck to your hand in addition to your normal draw. If it is a card that mention Heart of the Cards, banish one card on your opponents field. This card and any monster this card points too gains 500 attack for each monster that mentions ‘Heart of the Cards’ on the field of GY
-Essentially BLS is the true Boss of the deck, getting stronger by its ‘friends’, making its friends stronger and being protected by HotC
Good job, but i think heart of the cards is a normal spell not continuous.
Might have to borrow this one from you!
@@customcardguy feel free too
I like this concept
Mystic elf works even if she has 0 attack. The cost is targetting.then the card tries to resolve as much of the effect as possible.
Make losing attack points part of the cost
Good call out, thank you!
Heart of the cards, GUIDE US!
Not sure how much use they would see in other decks but since the retrains of Curse of Dragon, Summoned Skull, and Gaia the Fierce Knight have very specific effects to the "Heart of the Cards" archetype but they could also say they are treated as their original names since you changed the name of the monster.
Fun fact about the anime yu-gi-oh the animated Series monster card celtic guardian brave heart the last name of this card is a reference to the movie brave heart
This might have potential. Also it's pretty funny that I recently made a whole archetype that doesn't rely on the heart of the cards at all (the deck can make 0 card combos, your deck is your second hand)

Summoned Skull my beloved, still my favorite monster to this day. Its in horrible condition, but I still have my Metal Raiders Summoned Skull
I think I got a MRD laying around too! Few years ago tried collecting all the different prints of Summoned Skull, wish I had gotten the 1st ed before it jumped in price
Love the idea and still feels fateful to the original series(dub atleast). A couple of interesting things id like to have seen;
Use of the ritual monsters black luster solider and magician of black choas, especially with the laters usage in the final duel with pegasus and the whole bonds thing. Could even give them a singular ritual spell since theyre both choas rituals by definition.
The fusion idea is awsome and fusing with your opponents could even be expanded on to include a B skull dragon retrain for the joey duel. Fusing with a red eyes or even a red eyes retrain to fuse with.
Maybe a archtypal monster reborn as it is one of yugis iconic cards and also would help with both the previously mentioned ideas.
Catapult turtle retrain maybebI know its an effect monster but its litterally in the art of one of the cards.
Continous spell that uses the smiley face drawing from episode one to help manipulate the deck further for your HOTC cards. Ie similar card art to symbol of friednship.
These are just some ideas though, loved the concept and would love to see this expanded further. Great job
I'll for sure look into BLS and Black Chaos, whether Ritual or just ritual-esque (like Toon BLS).
I retrained Catapult Turtle as a trap instead of a monster to give the deck some more variety. Originally had it as a Level 4 (as it is in the manga) that could be specialed if you control a Level 5+ HOTC monster. But the continuous aspect of the trap playtested better.
Good call on the friendship symbol lol, definitely belongs here.
@@customcardguy I'm glad to help :) love to see stuff like this and would love to see it expanded on in the future:) if you needed ideas for another trap - magical hats is something you could have fun retraining For HOTC, especially if it worked similar to its irl effect, except if you attack a trap, it could be activated as if it was set, something like that. Or even a more anime accurate retrain. :)
Interesting way to retrain these cards.
I have two of them as generic retrains:
Silver Fang, the Alpha Wolf
Attribute: EARTH
Type: Beast
Level: 3
Atk: 1200
Def: 800
Effect1: If this card is summoned, you can special summon up to two level 3 or below Beast-Type Monsters from your deck or hand, except “Sliver Fang, the Alpha Wolf.”
Effect2: If this card goes to the GY, you can add one Beast-Type Monster from your deck to your hand.
_____________________
Lightning Feral Imp
Attribute: DARK
Type: Fiend
Level: 5
Atk: 2000
Def: 2100
Effect1: OPT: If you control an Equip Spell, you can Special Summon this Monster.
Effect2: OPT: You can add one equip spell card to the hand from the deck or GY instead of conducting your normal draw, and then shuffle the deck if added from there.

Thoughts?
Silver Fang would need a restriction. Bringing out 3 monsters via 1 summon is a lot of trouble waiting to happen
@@customcardguy not necessarily. Given the speed of the game, and the amount of negates, Silver Fang isn’t that broken.
Oh my god
How would you build an archetype that supports Dark Magician, Neos, Stardust Dragon, and Number 39: Utopia like Yuya’s deck does for the dimension dragons (Odd Eyes, Starving Venom Fusion, Clear Wing Synchro, and Dark Rebellion Xyz)? And perhaps include a ritual spell that can be used to Xyz summon a Chaos Number monster or the ritual summon of a BLS or “Chaos” ritual monster. There can also be monsters that mirror Odd Eyes Venom, Odd Eyes Wing, and Odd Eyes Rebellion. I think the central card should be a reference to the Bonds Beyond Time movie. Perhaps an Xyz monster that has art that is a fusion of Dark Magican, Neos Wiseman, and Stardust Dragon could be one of the boss monsters.
much better than the shining sarcophagus and phantom exodia support cards
here day one
Trojan mammoth doesn’t work unless you add a line where you can summon this card to the opponent’s field instead of your own. Or something like that otherwise it would just be stuck in the extra deck since none of the cards said you can summon monsters to your opponent’s field
Ah interesting. Will update that, thank you!
Sadly, the "heart of the card" is a dub only thing like the Shadow Real.
The posibilities of support themed around it is slim to none, unless it's a TCG exclusive.
Not entirely. The dub certainly made it a recognizable phrase, but it is stated a couple of times in the manga and one of the volumes is named as such. That said, you're right that it likely wouldn't be the term Konami goes with if they decided to retrain Grandpa's deck.
Going to build a deck with these cards in duelingbook and test them against my Yugi Muto character deck, Grandpa Muto gonna teach Yugi about the TRUE power of the heart of the cards >:D
Love to hear it! Let me know how it goes and if you have any feedback
@@customcardguy (sorry for not responding for that long i forgot i made this comment) the heart of the cards deck completely obliterated yugi
Mammoth Graveyard doesn't have the text denoting it's a quick effect. It being on the field is not enough to turn it into a quick effect, it needs to explicitly state that it's a quick effect.
Btw, Summoned Skull, which you based Summoned Soul on, has an archetype condition to treat it as an "Archfiend" card, as based on its original Japanese name, it's in the same archetype as the Archfiend cards. I suggest adding that the Summoned Soul as well, since it's clear that the names of these cards are based on their English names.
There are a handful of cards that have the qualifier "This is a quick effect if..." (for example, Subterror Guru), so that's what I based Mammoth Graveyard's effect on. Is there a reason you think that's insufficient?
Summoned Skull is treated as an archfiend because of the "Skull" part of the name, which I suppose was the censored way of saying Demon before "Archfiend" became a term. Basically, "Summoned Soul" isn't an Archfiend card, so I didn't include the qualifier.
@@customcardguy 3:38~3:55 "If you control a monster that mentions "Heart of the Cards": You can target 1 other monster on the field; equip this card from your hand or field to that target. You can only use this effect of "Mammoth Graveyard - Undying Heart" once per turn. The equipped monster loses 1200 ATK and 800 DEF, also negate its effects." This is what the card rendered on the screen says. It doesn't have *any* text that makes it a quick effect, not even the "This is a quick effect if..." text that you just mentioned. *This* is what I meant, not that the effect itself was insufficient.
I... didn't realize that about Summoned Skull. My bad.
@@BurstFlareah I see what you mean. The image is an older version I forgot to update. The text on the right is the correct effect. Thanks for calling out!
i didn't watch this yet but i think a dope way to make a deck from this anime troupe would've been to go back though all the moments in yugioh where they said heart of the cards and remade cards based off each of those cards lol at least the art work
Didn't do exactly that, but I did build on some of those crazy Duelist Kingdom moments. Konami recreated one in "Attack the Moon!", so I threw in a few more here
@customcardguy I liked it I'm waiting to see this test deck played now
Ah yes, that once concept. Rarely mentioned in the manga or the original anime but that the dub drilled into everyone’s head till the point they think it was extremely important.
How will that be translated into cards I wonder?
The dub drilled the phrase, but the principle is very much evident throughout the entire series and spinoffs.
Wonder how all this would break out of arctype cards.
Those other archetypes don't believe in the heart of the cards
since this deck put alot of cards on the top of your deck wouldnt you be putting cards on top of other cards you want next turn? is there a heart of greed card that lets you draw them whenever you place a new card on top of the deck or something lol
Heart of the Cards (the card) as well as a few others allow you to draw. I suppose there might be instances here and there where you trigger 2 stack effects, which essentially overrides 1. Maybe one more way of drawing on your opponent's turn could help remedy that if it feels like an issue
@customcardguy I hadn't finished the video but now I see you do have a few ways I noticed. If you do decide to make another card tho "heart of greed" is a good name for it 😏😉
im deffinantly stealing this lol
Don't go stealing my heart
Rush duel updates art is way cooler
For real
Bro the heart of the cards isn't even exist in the anime it was a made up thing in the 4kids dub
1) It's said in the manga. There's even an entire volume named "heart of the cards". Considering a card like Gold Sarcophagus got an archetype based on it even though it only appears in 1 duel, this isn't really an issue.
2) The dub hammered the phrase, but the principle is clearly evident throughout the series. It's a clear line of differentiation between how Kaiba approaches the game vs Yugi.
But there's no card that has heart of the cards in its actual name 🤔🤷🏾♂️
It goes off by cards that "mention" it, or in other words, have the phrase "Heart of the Cards" in their text description. This is commonly done to make archetypes out of cards that don't share a common name, such as the Dark Magician archetype or Shining Sarcophagus archetype.
anyone gonna tell this guy beaver warrior is a girl?
Louise transitioned to Louis
The art is nice and the creativity is nice but I absolutely hate character decks, the design philosophy of card that mentions "insert name" is just a huge turn off for me, it and some other modern card design choices like locking into only a single summoning mechanic kill creativity and ruined deck building for me.
I'm with you on the creativity of deck-building. Archetypes self-contain, which has the advantage of avoiding toxic combos with the greater card pool. But one tradeoff is that those archetypes become linear (defined playstyle, or worse, defined combos).
This one in particular, though, was designed to be more of a toolbox. There are 29 cards here, and I'm sure folks could come up with different ways to build and play it.
