  • So here we are, Resident Evil 0, some would say forgotten gem, others would say disappointing prequel. I loved this game but after replaying it recently, I've discovered some things about this game, that has changed my mind!

    I need everyone to know, that I don't hate this game. I maybe should've made this a little more clear in the video. The point of this video was me trying to figure out why people don't like RE0, so I was replaying it from that mindset, and ultimatly found that these complaints make the game miss it's mark at being a legendary RE tittle.. It has issues that I address and I still stand by them. That being said I REALLY like this game. Ever since I published this video I actually beat the game two more times, and in each playthrough, I had better luck with dodging the eliminators, but they still feel broken to me and always get cheap shots in when I try running by them. Enemies like this can hamper the experience and make newcomers not want to finish the game. I hope you guys understand what I was trying to say in this video.

      It's a decent games but has it's flaws. One thing that would've instantly made it better is to remove Billy (maybe even Rebecca too) and replace with other stars members. Adding Billy to this story made no sense. I would've preferred more scenes with stars members, that would've been interesting and getting to know them would've made losing them in re1 have more of an impact.

      best review of the game. The game really does lack any character and atmosphere. There's nothing wrong with gameplay though. I really liked the difficulty, and how the game gave you just enough resources to get you by. unfortunately without said atmosphere, the game failed to be on par with the other RE games....at least for me.

    In my mind, I always justified Rebecca’s behavior in RE1 as trauma from RE0. She’s completely alone now that Billy is gone and she’s been awake and fighting for her life for 24 hours, presumably. Being a rookie, she has reached her limit at that point. That’s how I see it. But I will agree that it’s not good that I had to fill so many gaps myself.

      I never saw anything wrong with her behavior, I mean she was even giving commands to chris and trying to help him and richard, even saving chris from a killer plant, the only weak point is when she was being attacked by the hunter, and that scene could fit even in 0. I dont know why ppl say she looks too innocent. I mean she always did all the way through both games imho.

      I don't know, it's this kind of over the top fantasy stuff that ruined RE series for me. Like Suzie said, Code veronica and RE0 were the start of the downfall of the franchise, and it just got worse from there. It went from a serious sci-fi survival horror that's grounded in reality, to some kind of wacky anime, or some sort of FF clone. I'm glad Capcom at least started remaking the original survival horror games, cause I haven't been excited for a new RE game for a long time until the remakes. I'm not even gonna talk about RE7 or 8, cause to me they're not RE games.

    The main problem is a phenomenon which often shows up in games or films when the prehistory is brought out after the main story. Resident Evil Zero was published by Capcom in 2002. The remake of Resident Evil in 2002 as well. This is where the crucial point begins. The remake Rebecca isn't assimilated to the Zero Rebecca although they have same outfit and same style. The voice actors are different in both games. The Remake Rebecca is just like Rebecca from the original version. That was one of the big mistakes, Capcom done by producing the game. In parallel, RE Zero was developed and its Rebecca has a completely different attitude than the original/Remake Rebbeca.
    The another mistake is a logical one as well. The whole Umbrella research facility (mansion, secret lab below the church, water treatment plant) was destroyed by detonation (caused by Birkin). The Birkin Lab appears in the game as well. It is located a hundred of meters below the mansion. Why does it show up in RE2 (I know it was published in 1998) when it was connected to the mansion and the treatment plant and it shouldn't have existed anymore in September 1998. That's the point.
    The fact that they showed part or the entrance of the Birkin Lab at Resident Evil Zero resulted in a logic error to the Birkin Lab from Resident Evil 2. Accordingly, there should no longer be a Birkin laboratory in Resident Evil 2 and I doubt there was anything like explosion protection for the laboratory at Resident Evil Zero.

      @markcobuzzi826 Před 3 lety +18

      I have two main issues with James Marcus as a villain in particular (besides his appearance, dialogue, and singing-opera-to-leeches gimmick, which could at least be retooled better in a later remake/adaptation):
      1.) In the RE Lore prior to RE0, the only B.O.W. that Umbrella possessed, which was capable of preserving and replacing a host’s consciousness, was the Nemesis parasites. This ability was treated as something unique only to those monsters, which was why Umbrella Europe found it invaluable to research the parasites and their applications. But apparently with Resident Evil Zero, James Marcus already crafted the Queen Leech monster, which could do exactly that to a perfect degree... as just one of its many other random abilities (like commanding other leeches akin to a queen ant, fusing together into bigger conglomerate monsters, changing the leeches’ appearance to mimic James Marcus himself, and even sprouting tentacles like the Nemesis Tyrant at one point to attack Rebecca/Billy). If Capcom wanted to go that route with James Marcus, where a parasitic creature allows him to retain his mind even after the T-Virus mutates his body, then it would probably complement the lore of RE3 better to just have Marcus rely on a Nemesis parasite and be the scientist behind its engineering. Not to mention, if Umbrella learned that this parasite enabled him to come back and pursue his vendetta, then they would have a reason to look further into those parasitic B.O.W.s leading up to the Raccoon City Incident and name them after Nemesis, the goddess of vengeance. Maybe the “Mimicry Marcus” leech monsters could still be in the game, as another of Marcus’ favorite “pets” that he unleashes upon Umbrella... then again it would be hard to make the final boss’s appearance unique, without the leeches crawling all over him.
      2.) James Marcus’ entire story becomes a little too much like a rehash of William Birkin (or vice versa if one is going by chronological order), only with Marcus being not as interesting and more awkward, in my opinion. I do not mind the idea of Birkin witnessing the assassination of Marcus, since it makes his fate later on seem more karmic. But then it goes further by having James Marcus be brought back to life by one of his creations at the last moment, when Umbrella thought he was dead, then wreck havoc by initiating an outbreak of the T-Virus. The only significant difference I can see is that Marcus was at least obviously aware of his actions, making them have a more clear vengeful vibe, while Birkin was descending into an animalistic beast. Yet with Birkin, there was a more defined catalyst for Umbrella to turn on him, with him and Annette planning on giving Umbrella’s research to the U.S. government. Meanwhile, RE0 seems to just have a vague reason for Marcus’ death, where Spencer simply becomes more paranoid and decides to replace him with Wesker and Birkin. Finally, the G-Virus was the life’s work of Birkin, which was specialized for biological immortality and adaptive regeneration. So I thought it made sense for Birkin to bring himself back to life at the last minute, using his G-Virus. But with Marcus, he is shot to death and the Queen Leech he was examining just happens to slither down his throat, which then conveniently brings him back to life just fine.

    I'm not sure that this actually makes the plot any better, but a minor correction; The leeches don't bring Marcus back to life and de-age him and he's not controlling them by singing. The queen leech he'd been experimenting on consumes him and, in so doing, absorbs his memories, after which it creates a body for itself which resembles him when he was younger. It controls the other leeches by virtue of being the queen leech... Deciding to sing opera is just a thing it does while it's doing so.
    You never meet Marcus in the game, he's been dead for a long time. You just meet an infected leech which thinks it is Marcus. That's why the "leech men" are called Mimicry Marcuses... They're attempting to form similar bodies.
    It's not actually as silly as it sounds... There have been experiments done where planaria (which are leech-type things) have been taught to navigate basic mazes, then been ground up and fed to other planaria which have then been able to navigate the maze first time. I was under the impression that the Queen Leech absorbed Marcus's hippocampus and revitalized his brain activity, ultimately merging with his dead body and becoming one with its creator. Through the Queen Leech's body, it seemed that Marcus himself was essentially reborn. Those leech men are called Mimicry Marcuses because they are in fact amalgamations of several T-virus leeches attempting to impersonate the human form of their creator. Marcus himself in the present day (i.e. 1998) lives on through one leech - the Queen Leech.
      This is never made clear in the game. Whether the Queen Leech actually revives Marcus or just _thinks_ it's him is almost left up to fan interpretation. Personally, I find the thought of Marcus reborn to be cooler, so that's how I usually interpret it. ;)

After it's events, Rebecca found her own way back to the city and didnt stay at the Spencer mansion which would explain her absence in her story, and she just didn't get back before Wesker and the rest of the team left to investigate the forest.

      I think this could be considered the weakest part of the original RE1’s story, the involvement of Bravo Team or lack thereof. Other than Richard (at least in the remake) and Rebecca, the whole Bravo Team was pretty much glorified inconsequential canon fodder. Extra thoughts below...
      Kenneth Sullivan and Forest Speyer die in the mansion before you even meet them onscreen. Edward (in the original) and Kevin (in the remake) are just there to provide corpses for our protagonists to find before getting attacked by Cerberus dogs. Enrico’s sole function is to provide an exposition dump that someone is a traitor, without his own character introduction and a few seconds before being killed by said person. Richard does not even get anything worthwhile to do until the RE1 Remake, where he at least saves Chris or Jill from Neptune or Yawn after receiving the serum. Finally, many of the things Rebecca does for Chris are stuff, which Jill Valentine could easily do herself like playing the piano or crafting the V-Jolt.
      *So I wonder if the RE1 story could have played out just as easily with these changes:*
      1.) Kevin, Edward, etc. were just regular RPD cops, the disappearances of whom S.T.A.R.S. was sent in to investigate.
      2.) Instead of Rebecca Chambers, Chris Redfield’s partner was just Jill Valentine herself, while Barry becomes the character whom Chris releases from the jail cell.
      3.) Kenneth and Forest’s roles were taken up by residents of the Arklay Mansion, who happened to last the longest before dying (or maybe our protagonists could have carried Joseph Frost’s mauled body into the mansion and later see it reanimate).
      4.) Richard and Enrico were part of the same team and entered the mansion along with Wesker, Chris, Jill, and/or Barry.
      5.) The storyline of RE0 played out with a different set of characters, who do not end up meeting S.T.A.R.S. in the Arklay Mansion, so we can still see the train, leeches, lore of James Marcus and the T-Virus’ early development, plus the interaction between Wesker and Birkin.

    • @markcobuzzi826

      Am I the only one who thinks that it could have been better, if James Marcus came back from death and mutation, by implanting himself with a Nemesis Alpha Parasite beforehand, rather than having a Queen Leech crawl down his throat? These are my reasons below, if anyone wants...
      At least then, the plot of RE0 would be incorporating a B.O.W. set up in the original three PS1 games and expanding the backstory of its use, rather than contriving “magic” leeches that just happen to resurrect him as one of their many random abilities. Then, these events could tie into Umbrella realizing the potential these NE-Alpha parasites have, for preserving the consciousness of a T-Virus B.O.W. like the Tyrants, thus leading to RE3’s Nemesis T-Type. Plus, Nemesis is named after the Greek goddess of divine vengeance, which coincidentally is similar to James Marcus’ own speech and rhetoric, when declaring that he will make Umbrella burn in Hell.
      As for the Mimicry Marcus leech monsters, they could still be in the game, albeit as something Marcus would unleash and control more indirectly, making him a Queen Leech in a more figurative sense. When you fight James Marcus as the final boss, he could look like these hybrid of a Crimson Head zombie, the Nemesis T-Type, and the mutated Alex Wesker. His first form in the actual game even has tentacle attacks like Nemesis. For the second form, his human body could transform to become more Licker-like, and some of those leeches could simply start to crawl over his body, more subtly giving him that “Queen Leech” vibe, rather than having the monster literally be a Queen Leech impersonating Marcus.
      Does anyone agree or disagree, whether this would be a better idea?

      @@SolidSnake240 Yeah, people seem to forget that. I feel like RE6 was where it really stopped being RE. While RE6 had a few very good redeeming qualities, overall it couldn't come close to the older games. RE5 obviously had the boulder punch and all, but I feel like that can be justified in a million different headcanons; experimented on in some kind of duplicate of the Wesker program; or just... very strong, most people we've seen in the franchise are strong, so the in-universe capacity for how strong one can be doesn't have to line up with ours to make sense.
      People also just disregard how ungrounded the original games could be too. I don't care if it's a BIOweapon -- they have fucking super powers.
      Even in the very opening of RE2 original, the characters are performing unrealistic feats. Claire literally throws a zombie over her shoulder, and then within the same 2 seconds throws a knife that just barely misses Leon and hits the zombie.
      Also, ALL of the original games had constant action -- you literally got a grenade launcher. Resident Evil 0 to Resident Evil 3 ALL ended with a timer counting down until something explodes, you're telling me that wasn't an action game?

    A huge problem not mentioned here is that when the game takes away one of your two characters without warning, their inventory disappears with them (strangely, this also applies to Code Veronica's forced character switches), so it's extremely easy to get de facto softlocked and end up forced to reload just to clear out their inventory before that point.
    Like most of this game's biggest problems, it's fairly easy to deal with and keep the game reasonably fun if you know about it in advance. I was able to finish RE0 myself and had a decent time, but only because another veteran was around to warn me about these gotchas. For a casual, blind first playthrough, which we expect most games to be designed around, it's more than enough to justify dropping the game and replaying one of the other REs instead.

      I think the main issue for many people is that many of the bosses in RE0 are not just giant mutated animals, but more specifically giant versions of common backyard pests, which makes the variety feel even narrower. Extra thoughts below to explain...
      If I recall correctly, all of RE0’s bosses are the Stinger, Centurion, Giant Infected Bat, Proto-Tyrant, and the Leech Queen. Meanwhile, the RE1 Remake had the Elder Crimson Head, the gigantic Mother Neptune, Plant 42, Yawn, Black Tiger, Lisa Trevor, and T-002 Tyrant.
      The Proto-Tyrant was basically a weaker failed version of the T-002 Tyrant. If the Proto-Tyrant acted as an elite heavyweight enemy like the G-Spawn in RE2 Remake or scrapped Tyrant Inferior, rather than a one-of-a-kind boss, at least then it would have its own distinct niche from the T-002 Tyrant. As far as other unique non-giant-animal bosses go, RE0 only had the Leech Queen, while the RE1 Remake had Plant 42 and Lisa Trevor.
      Finally, the Mother Neptune was at least unique in providing an oceanic vibe and being a well-presented puzzle boss, in my opinion. Unlike RE1 just giving us Black Tiger, RE0 gives us two giant bug bosses in the form of the scorpion and centipede, making it feel more repetitive. Plus, the Centurion does not even actively attack you, and at least something like the Gravedigger in RE3 had some unnatural blending of worm traits, millipede traits, and hellish toothed maws. Although Yawn could also be considered a large mutated backyard pest, it does at least convey its own apex predator vibe, like those stories of massive Anacondas suffocating people and trying to swallow them whole, plus it is better presented in the mansion setting than the giant bat for me.

    As for Rebecca being weak and helpless in Resident Evil 1, I would say that physical and mental fatigue took over to pretty much humanize her character and make her seem like her nightmare which is taking place in a span of 2 days is endless.
    You see her breakdown and cry in front of Chris in the Guardhouse V-Jolt Chemical Room, she isn’t with Billy anymore and all of her friends/comrades are dying around her, Rebecca is only human.
    As for the Hunter in the room, if you think about it, she only had a handgun at that point with probably 15 rounds left in the chamber, and one Hunter got the jump on her and followed her into a supposed safe room, which shows how relentless the Spencer Mansion Hunters were, and if Chris hadn’t been around that floor of the Mansion yet, there were 3 hunters waiting for her in the next room behind the door she was backed up at, and the other door on the opposite side of that room had two hunters behind it in that hall.
    Not to mention, Rebecca didn’t know if Chris was still alive at that point or if he was anywhere around the Mansion yet, to her, Chris could have been in the Guardhouse again or in the caves already, and she was so tired and beaten down physically and mentally at that point, she really probably thought that she was the only one left alive.

      That’s the unfortunate circumstance that most RE fans like myself have to deal with, the original RE came out in 1996 and Shinji Makami (not sure I spelled his last name right.) said that he only wanted to make a stand alone horror game with no sequels and no prequels, just Resident Evil, a little horror game where a rescue team encounters Zombies in a deserted mansion, it’s sorta a spiritual successor to Sweet Home.
      After Resident Evil 1 got so popular and so huge in the mainstream, Capcom definitely wanted to capitalize and make a sequel which ended up being everyone else’s favorite Resident Evil except mine LoL.
      Shinji made Resident Evil without any plans of a cliffhanger ending into a sequel it was supposed to be stand alone, Capcom wanted more and more sequels until they really killed out the franchise and stopped making money with it.
      I think that’s why Resident Evil 1 was remade, so they could make their prequel which is Zero and try to make everything tie in together nicely.
      I just love Resident Evil Zero so much, I don’t understand why so many of the fans don’t like it and other horror fans too, it has it’s fixed camera angles that most of the die hard fans cry for a return to the series every day.
      Only a few people love this game, as well as me, I have so many memorable moments with it and I just find myself trying to defend it every time. 😢

    Resident Evil Zero is fascinating to me because you can tell by reading the language of the game design that this is a game made by people who have completely run out of ideas. This was still before the massive game changer that was 4 so at this point they and the fan base still thought all Resident Evil could be was spooky mansions and you can tell they were running out of things to do with them considering entire rooms serve the purpose of only holding items and not a damn thing else. Also the monsters are extremely uninspired, most of them being nothing more than "animal or bug that is now really big." Some people think RE4 is a betrayal to the series and took it in an unnecessary direction. After playing Zero I'm convinced we absolutely needed 4 otherwise the series could have died a pretty pathetic demise.

Thanks the the small amount of healing items, having your partner get hit by a monster you were able to dodge, is a real problem. I had JUST gotten the grenade launcher, but I gave it to Rebecca as Billy had the shotgun. I had very little pistol ammo and only like 6 or 7 shells, so when the centipede grabbed Rebecca I unloaded half a mag of pistol ammo and all my shells, and I was completely out. My only other option was the knife, which I tried my darndest to use but it felt like nothing was even happening. I suffered through that fight until Rebecca died and I ended up taking the grenade launcher, the shotgun, and all of Rebecca's pistol ammo as well. That, plus the super tight corridors that don't really let you dodge enemies is pretty annoying so far.

    I heard the game was based off of Sweet Home from the NES which features the band Rebecca and a version of its battle theme was used in a Trailer for the original RE. So the dropping items was based on Sweet Home and had the added feature of what they wanted in making the game harder to play.

      @@Jack_80 well the pre-rendered backgrounds still look gorgeous to this day, but they had to use that direction because of hardware limitations. We have gotten one amazing remake and one pretty good remake in the past year-and-a-half and I think that's something worth celebrating. The fact that Capcom has appreciated their roots and has also brought them into the modern era it's a good thing. We still have these games with the pre-rendered backgrounds that we can go back and play whenever we need to scratch that itch. I think they need to stick with the new remake visual direction whatever they make future RE games.

    the game never really bridged the connection to 1. Rebecca just splits up from bravo and meets up with them 2 times, and how do expect anyone to believe that they're 2 gigantic facility (3ish if you count re2-3) and that no one finds out about them until its too late. If you ask me the game should've been split off into two parts, the train and woods of the arklay mountains where Rebecca and bravo team trek up to mansion from re1 in sort of blair witch way, maybe have it so that enter manison and explore it for a bit.

    • @Akd71008
      @Akd71008 Před 5 lety +2

      I would get rig of it all and just keep the woods and mansion. Make the first bit about surviving the woods (no Billy, no train, no other facilities other than what was in RE1) and then have it follow the events of RE1 with the mansion, guardhouse, tunnels, labs etc... Wouldn't mind seeing more areas to explore as well but keep it simple. Would be better if Rebecca wasn't the main character but not sure how the player is suppose to beat the game with a character that eventually dies in the story lol
      Having said all that, not sure RE0 even needed to happen to begin with. The lead up to RE1 was pretty straight forward so not sure why they felt like it needed some large expanded story that just made things more complicated.

      What helps me understand and link the portrayal of Rebecca Chambers in RE 0 and than later RE 1 is simple: exhausted from being up 48 hours straight since RE1 takes place the next day. Don't forget that all this macabre stuff has probably been somewhat traumatic for an 18 year old rookie which by the way all that trauma is returning in the form of PTSD for Rebecca now that Billy is gone and she is alone until we meet her in RE1.

The Rebecca being scared thing does seem odd after killing a Tyrant, but you know 0 came after, so they didn't even know at the time that she was going to kill a Tyrant when they designed her character and story. My explanation for it was she was out of ammo or just had her pistol and knew it wasn't enough for that hunter in that small space.

    Finally got around to playing RE0!
    Yeah, I have to largely agree with the enemies, leechmen being especially painful to deal with. I feel like their attacks have some slight tracking to them too, making them even harder to dodge. Definitely should have been either tanky or long range, but not both. The Infected Bat boss was also a nightmare to deal with, until I managed to cheese it with grenade spam on it when the first grenade connected. The small bat swarms it spawns makes especially hard to target it, since your character might auto aim the smaller bats instead.
    I'm kinda torn with item dropping. On hand, I think its pretty cool how you can leave items behind and they won't despawn. Gives you bit of incentive to try to plot out the best places to drop your stuff at and repick them back up if need be at a later time. On the other hand, item boxes would have probably still been better. You wouldn't have to worry about the item drops being obscured by the camera or next to another interactable object, making it harder to pick up a drop item.
    All that said, I do still like it, but it most definitely is not my favorite from the franchise.

    I mean if you have to criticise the bosses from 0 you have to do the same with 1. I mean giant snake, giant shark, giant plant, giant spider..... wouldn't say that's any more creative. I think the drop system is great, you can place any key items that require more than one unlock next to each other next to the area you have to unlock. As for the rest of the items, group them all into one area. I find it convenient because when you have a full inventory, going back and too to the item box was kind of annoying compared to dropping a less important item and continuing on. Either system has backtracking though having both a box as well as the drop system would have been a better idea. I personally thought the Monkeys were one of the highlights of the game. I think the survival aspect in 0 is in all honesty more present in this game than a lot of the other older titles.

    • @logiclunacy606
      @logiclunacy606 Před 5 lety +2

      Pieces109 It's not inaccurate, either one has giant animals, I'm pointing out that having an issue with that implies that you also have an issue with other bosses in the franchise. It doesn't matter whether it was on better hardware or not, that isn't the case, it's another classic adaptation of Resident Evil, so some things are to be expected. Better Hardware does not make a better game, you can especially tell in titles of Resident Evil 5, 6 & 7 where creativity is clearly not present at all. I personally think that RE 0 is my second favourite classic game and my first being Code Veronica X.

    • @krauser18x
      @krauser18x Před 5 lety +1

      But in RE1 the animals didnt look too generic as in Zero, and they were Bio-weapons, and in Zero they didnt, and as the other guy said, they had more budget to be more creative and they created generic monsters, also they were bosses not common enemies as the spiders

    • @logiclunacy606
      @logiclunacy606 Před 5 lety +1

      mickie Just because it came out first or you played it first doesn't make it not generic. If you think about it a scorpion, millipede, bat and whatever on earth the final boss was just as generic as a Snake, Shark, Plant monster and Spider (which is a normal enemy as well). We don't need to discuss the Tyrant since he appears in both games. The spider as I said is already an enemy, it's like if RE0 greeted you with a Giant Monkey as a boss fight with a few little monkeys to make it not as easy. I think your issue with the RE0 bosses is not that they're generic but is more to do with their colour palette being mostly shades of brown making it not as pretty to look at. Though I'd say horror games aren't supposed to be pretty or super colourful, taking away the grit ruins the vibe it was intentionally going for.

    • @Khotgor
      @Khotgor Před 5 lety +1

      RE1's Snake, The Spider, and the Shark (if you call the Shark a Boss) parts are the most unoriginal... they are just either normal animals that have their height grown... or just normal animals.
      The Plant however is nothing like the Snake nor the Shark. Not sure why you would compare the Plant to either of the two, the Plant actually looks like a freak of nature, a mutant of the highest caliber, kinda like the Hunters and Chimera.
      I agree, you should be able to criticize anything, original or not, and giant animal bosses are just... really lame. But the Plant Boss is not lame aesthetically. It's not like its a giant dandelion that whips you with its dandelion petals and is just a giant dandelion. Give a bit more respect than just giant thing, its clearly more original than the other three mentioned.

    • @logiclunacy606
      @logiclunacy606 Před 5 lety +2

      Khotgor I think you miss my point, I'm not criticising either game for having giant animals or the plant, I personally don't mind them, it's different to just having overly mutated things. My criticism is that these games are known for having giant animals, particularly the first game, yet this one gets criticised for it yet it's okay for others to have them. I mean yeah it was the last game to use the classic formula but if you're not basing this off nostalgia and criticising this game for one thing but praising another for the same thing kinda contradicts that statement. Since 0 is a prequel, people could end up playing that as their first game and then following up with the others which could create an entirely different experience for that particular person. Blaming a game for it's saturation of a particular thing that was done before does not make the game worse objectively but it's more your previous experiences that add up overtime that make the experience not as interesting for you.

    I suppose to explain Rebecca being cornered in RE 1, as a theory, she had no ammunition/weapons on her.
    One thing I noticed of this, she ends up at the Spencer mansion unharmed, but also there were zombie's/cereberus/lisa/other foes still roaming around. You'd think that Rebecca could've fought them all off/or at least got most of them, but they are still present when everyone else comes into play in the start of RE 1. If I had to guess, there would have been more enemies, and Rebecca must have taken care of a majority, but lost use after having nothing else other than maybe her chemistry set.
    One thing to note as well, in Vendetta she mentioned how she felt that the field wasn't for her when she decided to stick with researching the viruses. I can imagine that she had more than one close calls back in between 0 and 1, and it had been too much for her to handle, thus making her choice to work in a lab more reasonable.
    But its hypothetical, I doubt this is what happened. Just a possibility
