  • Death Proof, half of Grindhouse, is one of my favorite Quentin Tarantino movies that I think is just misunderstood by most. This video essay touches on range of topics from the history of grindhouse cinema, Tarantino's opinions on the current industry, the digital vs. film debate; with the film 'Death Proof' at the center of it all.

      Sexism. Tarantino's viewer base is mostly young men, yeah? The heroes of this film are beautiful, shallow, independent, manipulative, at times obnoxiously assertive women who do a traditionally male job - stunt work - and spend much of the film chattering and making fun of men. And if there's one thing men hate, it's beautiful, talkative, bossy women who talk a lot, take "men's" jobs, and laugh at men behind their backs. Death Proof is ego-kryptonite for 95% of males under 45.

    This is one of my favourite Tarantinos. I've never understood why people say that Death Proof had no story or characters, or that the dialogue is boring.
    The writing and characterisation strikes me as really strong, from the very first scene where you know pretty much everything you need to know about the three main women and their relationships with each other from the way they move, what they say, and how they say it.
    Jungle Julia's lying on the backseat with her legs out the window, like the Queen Bee, her friend's driving the car and amicably bickering with her, and her other friend clearly hasn't been around for a while, judging by the way she confuses the bickering for actual fighting. And that simple-but-sharp character sketching is there all throughout the movie, in both sets of women, as well as the killer and periphery characters. As well as a slasher/car chase mashup, it's also just a really entertaining revenge picture.
    I think that to enjoy the film you need to have both an interest in and passion for (no pun intended) pulp fiction, and the idea that interesting art can be found in cheaply made, disposable, exploitational media. If you like Death Proof, there's a chance you might also like paperback horror fiction from the '70s through to the '90s, crime novels and Hammer horror and underground comics.

    I'm not a Grindhouse enthusiast, and it's possible I'd never even heard of the concept of grindhouse and exploitation movies when I first watched it, but Death Proof is still probably my favorite QT film. I like it more with every time I watch it, and something about it just makes it very re-watchable.
    There's so many things in it that just make it so great to me. The trademark hypnotizing dialogue; all the editing mistakes in the first half of the movie; the sudden genre flip midway through, with that harsh transition from saturated, low quality, dirty and grainy film to black and white; the whole meta aspects of having the unknown stunt double who did all the stunts for Uma Thurman in Kill Bill be one of the main stars, while having her play the role of a stunt double in the movie's world, and the fact that she's perfect in it even with her thick kiwi accent; the way the movie flips on itself to provide the audience a satisfying cathartic payback on Stuntman Mike by switching from slasher in which women are prayed on, to car chase movie in which a group of women comically beat him to a pulp; and that abrupt ending, almost as if Tarantino is saying, "there, they got the bad guy and that's all, folks!". Man, what a great movie in my opinion.

      Absolutely, some guy i saw say the chase was ‘mediocre’ but seriously in action it takes so much more than two cars chasing each other to make it exciting and Tarantino knows exactly what he needs to do up the stakes. The choreography/set pieces, stuntwork, cinematography, editing, sound mixing of that chase are super well done. And tbf even better than some of the chases in Vanishing Point which can sometimes be lackluster in its direction/cinematography since its actually barely about a pure car chase but about 70s culture experiment filmmaking and whatnot

The biggest problem with Grindhouse I noticed was that it never received the Wide Release it deserved. It played in absolutely none of my local theaters. I think what Quentin means by that digital is killing cinema is that when something is shot or handled digitally in mind, it kills the feeling of awe and wonder you can get when you see something moving. Think about it, there's no more character within the films and filmmaking of those films. I don't think Quentin should be seen as some kind of backwards asshole just because he prefers the older methods, it's just a normal emotional response to something we love slowly dying. I remember shooting on film for the first time. The year was 1984, I would have been 10, the film stock was super 8 (8 mm). I had save up my pocket money (for months) and finally bought a reel. I'd learned how to load it in to the camera, (quite easy, as it was a cartridge), and took it outside. I had built a model spaceship, and I was planning on flying it through some corn fields, (as if it was an alien planet). I practiced a few times, then rolled a few takes and before I knew it, the film had ran out. I then unloaded the cartridge, posted it to the 'lab' and waited. And waited. And waited. After a few weeks, the developed roll was delivered, I threaded it in to the projector (a nimble skill) and ran the film. Imagine my joy as I watched a few minutes of a murky scene; the film was underexposed. Not to be discouraged, I did the whole lot again, but had learned more about exposure, (how I did, I can't recall, but it's so easy to look this up these days, in 1984 not as much, if at all). As I said, I did it all again only to find, this time, the shot film was out of focus.
    The point of the above is to illustrate just how shit it was to film something, as a kid in 1984. I later used VHS and although the quality was bad, at least you could see your results straight away. My friends and I even learned (rudimentary) editing by slaving two VHS machines together, (except there would be this strange green line running vertically through the frame). I later had a machine which allowed audio to be dubbed later.
    Excuse my long windedness, I'm getting on and thankful that todays kids DONT have to put up with the level of shit I had to. I wish digital had been around when I was younger.
    One more thing, your video didn't mention is the environmental benefits of digital. The processing of film would leave huge amounts of waste products. Nasty chemicals that pollute and kill. Is Tarantino happy for that just so he can stay entertained in his old brain? Probably?
    Death Proof is okay.

    I find Death Proof perfect, and this is a fantastic tribute to it. I think folks either “get it” or they don’t. For the latter, it didn’t resonate because they aren’t likely emotionally attached or even all that aware of the era and genre to which he was paying homage.

    This movie is definitely underrated. There's no other movie like it out there.
    I still love movies with practical effects, I think Fury Road would have been much worse if they had just used CGI. But CGI definitely has its place. And as you point out, digital is so much more accessible, it's possible to make a great movie without a huge budget.

    • @daniel_netzel
      @daniel_netzel  Před 6 lety +1

      Fury Road is honestly such a perfect example of how to blend the two, they use CGI when it's impossible to do otherwise, they use it in subtle ways you'd never even notice, and then the rest is practical effects, and the final product? One of the most spectacular visual feasts of any film I've seen.

    • @Ssalamanderr
      @Ssalamanderr Před 6 lety +1

      I agree. And even the opening has tons of CGI with the whole location of the Citadel, it's just really well designed and executed. It's used appropriately, not as a crutch.

The dialogues here are pretty natural, which at least for me is very interesting, case in point, the diner scene with the 2nd group of girls. I feel like I'm one of them, happily eating while chit chatting and listen to their stories. And don't forget the bomb music pieces! I downloaded some of them! Lol.

    i saw the commercial for dead proof and the other co film a long time ago when i was still watching dvds, and i thought that it looked ridiculous (mostly the other movie)... of course this was when i was young and had yet to see a tarantino movie... i have finally gotten around to watching death proof over ten years later... and dare i say it is arguably my favorite tarantino movie... it is so personal, creative, and i love how it changes from a slow paced slasher, which sets the entire tone for the half of the movie... the lap dance scene is so incredibly poetic and entrancing... and on top of it all tarantino manages to consistently make the movie about the snappy dialogue hes so well know for, which is nice that it doesnt put so much strain on the horror aspect... and the cheesy one liners screams kill bill... i cant believe this movie got poor reviews... o wait yes i can, the majority of the population has aggressively mediocre task when it comes to movies...

  • @VirtueInsightWebPage
    @VirtueInsightWebPage Před 8 lety

    - Sorry for the video troubles, glad it's fixed! This was my original comment:
    Another great vid FilmRadar! I sympathize for every older population within every generation as there is always a feeling of disconnection and being left-out or forgotten in the face of the present day of the time they now live in as older people. Older generations especially over the last 100 years (with such an exponential skyrocketing of technology every decade), they feel as though they're incapable of keeping up or refuse to adjust, and believe that their times were "the good old days" and odds are the times in which the current and ongoing older populations lived may always feel this way - but this is to be expected as we all cling to the memories of the times that marked a generation, and all feel as though the generations after us are inferior if for no other reason than not having made a living when the older generation was making their living when they were young. "The Times They Are a-Changin" covers all of what I'm talking about here.
    But onto the second point - I agree that going from actual film to digital film is nothing to condemn outright. Yes the older methods of movie making have a large degree of charm and appeal to many (even still today; Casablanca, It's a Wonderful Life, To Kill a Mockingbird - those are all timeless classics!) but the new forms of digital film production are also poignant and very user-friendly. I think of us CZcamsr's, we are allowed the chance to be spectacular 1-man-productions with video editing computer programs + an engaging interactive online audience that have 24-hour access to the productions of literally millions of CZcamsr's. Yes social media has immensely negative downsides as well (social disconnection, isolation, loneliness, stifled interaction, ect) but tech has always been a sort of double-edged sword. The best of possible worlds I hope to see is better collective self-control with social media / technology and people finding incentives to disconnect and interact as much as possible whilst still allotting themselves moderation with their uses of social media and 21st century tech.

    • @daniel_netzel
      @daniel_netzel  Před 8 lety +1

      Precisely, I definitely agree that the way technology grows makes it even harder for older folks to stay in touch with the modern times. I couldn't agree more, it's just a different way of doing things, it doesn't have to affect the process and it often doesn't. Maybe one day we can see that world? I think as a society there are still just a bunch of kinks to work out, it's all still so new and I don't think we really realize the potential of social media just yet, but we're getting there.

    That's an interesting take on the autobiographical nature of Death Proof. With Tarantino's disdain for digital, I've always said that he's coming from his own personal history there. He worked in Video Archives for years before making movies so he has this sentimental past with physical, HARD media.

    The movie set up and subverted your expectations by killing off what seemed to be the main cast after what, half an hour? Pam's death and the crash scene was a genuinely bone chilling sequence with amazing pfx. Then the dialogue with the protagonists in the second act, when we don't even see stuntman mike for like 40 minutes of runtime? It made you feel like one of the girls. I've seen the movie three times, most recently two days ago. It still makes my heart race when they're doing ship's mast and Mike comes back. Then the ending is just pure kickass catharsis. Criminally underrated.

    Hi, today, got you suggested by Google on my phone device. (Probably cause i always read and watch tons of stuff on QT). Instantly opened and played... A Little gem right there man!! I see what you did there, amazing work!!
    First of, thank you so much on doing it for DeathProof. For years, people (those people) snubbed Jackie Brown, now that there's something new to point their fingers at, they finally include Jackie Brown in the list of QT movies.
    We know why people don't get it, and we know why QT himself says it's his worst movie (which could rarely be the best of some other directors), it is only a box office matter. I think at one point he even got paranoid and worried that he couldn't get back after this (30 million) failure. Nevertheless, he recouped that with 700 millions and more of the next two multi awarded blockbusters.
    However, we always need to support and remind about this little masterpiece Death Proof! And you did it gorgeously!!
    I like how you split it in two parts, same as the movie, i love the witty and clever editing and of course how you wrote the whole thing.
    Needless to say im already subscribed and i will watch your other videos.
    (Let's hope QT himself will see your video too, even though he knows that real fans dig on Death Proof a lot.)
    Peace!

It drives me crazy, people always have to pick on at least one of his films, but I'm tired of it always being Death Proof, honestly, Death Proof is my second favorite of his after Inglorious Basterds. I think you're right, he's always been commercially successful, I don't think he was ready for this movie to flop and did what he could to embrace it. Man, I would love it if he saw the video, that would be incredible.
