I love Eggman because of how flexible he is as an antagonist. In one story, he could be an incredibly funny character that bounces off the heroes really well, and in another, he could be the scariest person imaginable, capable of some real, inhumane cruelty.

That's why a big word like 'antagonist' exists, it means the actor in the STORY who unleashes the crisis, not the crisis itself. The big evil in this world is 340 million people who are getting awarded 15 cents less cost for a gallon of gas, only to then let their government take $2 on the top anyway and murder everyone just for the sake of petrodollar and sweatshop air jordans.

He is established as a genius without rival in most appearances. Some of the things he pulls off could be considered miracles and if he was a more good-natured person then he could easily be a messiah figure in the sonic setting for how quickly and easily he'd be able to improve global technology.

  • @SSB_Master_Hand

By far, one of my favorite moments from Eggman comes from the IDW comics. In short, Eggman himself answers the question of why he's been struggling to beat Sonic all these years despite his 300 IQ: he wants to beat Sonic at his own game. If Eggman simply wants Sonic dead, he can carpet bomb the hedgehog anytime he wants or go to some other similar extreme. However, this is about pride. It's not a win for Eggman unless he can prove his superiority over Sonic.
It's like: "Yes, I _could_ pick up a gun, shoot this high-level martial artist in the face and win like that. However, to prove that I'm truly better than them, I'll fight them in their area of expertise and win." This motive for Eggman also explains why Metal Sonic and other such creations exist. Fight fire with fire.

    • @Gnidel
      @Gnidel Před rokem +39

Pre-IDW I thought that he actually tried carpet bombing (S3&K) and it failed.
I don't like how IDW made both Sonic and Eggman basically hold their punches. Sonic thinks he can kill Eggman anytime but he won't because good Eggman would be extremely beneficial for the world. Eggman thinks he can kill Sonic anytime but doesn't want overkill. I think they both are wrong, both are too overpowered to kill each other. Sonic is too fast to kill, Eggman is too good at escaping killers as well. This means that diving into why they limit each other was unnecessary.

    • @bestaround3323
      @bestaround3323 Před rokem +49

@Gnidel I disagree, I think there have been plenty of times when Sonic could have killed Eggman. In unleashed if he simply went for the kill right away before he could press the button, Eggman would be toast. There is no way he can react faster than super sonic could attack.
As for Eggman killing Sonic, I mean it is more debatable, but he could have killed sonic easily in forces.

Eggman is a fine villain as you can incorporate him in a ton of different moods and it can still work. Eggman is threatening enough to do some heartless and low actions to get any advantage over Sonic, but he is also goofy and funny so you can depict him as a person with some level of good and conscious to them like in Sonic Frontiers. Eggman just suffered from flanderization and a poor script in the mid 2000s - the 2010s as they either deprived him of any comedy in Sonic 06 or usually made him nothing except comedic relief like in pretty much most games.

Honestly, I love Eggman. To the point where I've almost come to see him as more of a draw to the Sonic games than Sonic himself, or at the very least I've come to like him more than Sonic. And while he does lack some consistency and balance between being a serious or goofy villain, it kinda feels like that works in his favor, making his character more flexible so that he can still feel like a faithful adaptation of the same character in almost any role he's put in. It's never really felt like he's acting out of character, regardless of whether he's slipping and falling over like a goof, or strapping a bomb to his enemies and launching them into space. He could be written better, but he still has that odd silly/serious charm that a lot of Japanese media does so well. Being a goofball is fine, but they need to dial back how dumb he can be, because that is the one sticking point in his characterization for me. After all, being as smart as he is, I find it REALLY hard to believe he would've ever released ancient evils like Dark Gaia or the Flames if Disaster after that mishap with Chaos in the first Sonic Adventure.

His eccentric nature, his charisma, his awesome mechs, his freaking laugh all make excited for his next evil scheme. Another cool part about him is relationship with Sonic. They both have a lot of pride and ego to them but especially stubborness. Eggman will never stop coming back and enacting some plot of world domination and Sonic will never stop thwarting said plot. They'll never say it to each others faces but there's a lot of respect there.
For me personally, I like Eggman with a mix of both comedy and seriousness. I want it to feel like there will be dire consequences if I let this egg shaped super genius win but let's all be honest, no one's taking a guy named Eggman riding around in his Egg Mobile seriously 100% of the time. I feel like Eggman's the type of character you want to nail a balance with and really add a sense of unpredictability to him, never knowing what he'll do next. It's just that the 2010's did an awful job balancing it (still think Eggman was the most entrrtaining in the cast at this time. Not saying much, I know).

When Starline asks if Eggman wants him gone, Eggman says he could bomb Sonic whenever he felt like but that's too easy. That's why Eggman waited 6 months to actually drop Sonic into space intead of getting a Zavok illusion to strangle him or something. Eggman wants the last laugh. For Sonic's final moments to be ones where Eggman seems unstoppable. This has a pattern of not working but Eggman's too prideful to just go to Sonic sleeping under a tree and nuke him. Funnily when Eggman was unleashing unstoppable evils and getting betrayed by them without learning his lesson, that was during the period where a lot of fans consider the writing to be at its strongest. But the moment the games went in a more comedic direction, Eggman would consistently go back to being the final boss. I feel as though Eggman is at his best when the more comedic parts of his character are used to offset the darker and more threatening aspects of who he is and the things he’s willing to do to accomplish his goals. His character is versatile enough to work in a variety of stories that have different tones but still be entertaining to watch if written well. This was a great analysis.

When it comes to Eggman, I kind of prefer when he's more lighthearted yet still a threat. Sure, in certain games, the comical aspect can overshadow the villainous side, but he still pulls his weight in that regard. Plus, I find Eggman kind of boring when he's completely serious. Like, yeah he can be threatening, but when you're only character trait is serious world conqueror, it becomes bland and unmemorable. I mean, Bowser doesn't have all that much depth to him in the mainline Mario games, yet people still remember him because of how long he's been around. Something that makes Eggman stand out as a villain to me, is that as a kid, my first exposure to him was Sonic Underground, a dystopian version of Sonic's world where Robotnik rounds up rebels and civilians to robotizise them. Not only was that the first time I had seen a dystopia (which obviously made it stick) but the concept of robotization just was scary as heck to me. Even today, it's a kind of body horror that makes me slightly uncomfortable and, by extension, cemented Robotnik as a very intimidating evil, despite his appearance.
Sometimes I wonder if *that* is the reason why became such a joke. Because the idea could be considered too scary to kids? Then again, I don't think robotization has been a part of the character in a while. I'm admittedly not too deep in Sonic lore. My last extensive venture was Sonic Forces and SA2B before that.

I've been around since the beginning and I can attest that Eggman is perhaps one of my favorite antagonists. From the early Sega games (not including Mean Bean Machine) to the 90's OVA, and the Archie comics, Sat AM, and beyond, I think he's a great villain that stood the test of time. He does have goofy moments, I think we all do. Not everyone can be 100% genius mode 24/7/365. And that humanity where he does have those moments is what makes him more compelling, imho.

Per usual, this’s a very solid video and a great analysis of Eggman’s character. Honestly, I think the main reason that Eggman has stood the test of time more than most other videogame villains, with the only one who’s remotely as iconic as him being Bowser, is how malleable he is. As you said, there’s plenty of different takes and interpretations of his character, some being more serious and intimidating and others on the comedic and humorous side. And while some are better than others, I wouldn’t really say there’s a flat-out bad version of Eggman since each one serves their role well: that being a foil to Sonic as well as a diabolical and egomaniacal doctor who stands in his way at every turn. He’s certainly simple as far as villains go, but very effective, and with Frontiers exploring his more human and grounded side with his relationship with Sage, I’ll be more than looking forward to how he’s written in the future.
Also, a large shoutout goes to Mike Pollock, who’s been voicing him all the way back since Sonic X and captures his pompous personality perfectly with every game he’s been in. Along with just being a delightful human being in general who’s surprisingly very active on Twitter.

You know, like paralyzing his subordinates but keeping them conscious and just locking them in small dark cabinets for god knows how long for fun. I think at one point he traps Snivelv in an animal capsule deep underground and lets a clone of him roam free so no one even bothers to look for him.
Hell, at one point he straight up just builds a mech that completely counters Sonic just to prove a point, that the only reason the Freedom Fighters had any chance was because he held back so it wouldn't be boring for him.” and that’s not even mentioning the eggs grapes which eggman used to drain thousands of people of their life and use their bodies as fuel

I notice the Unleashed footage being shown often (note very time) when you reference his more comedic side but I must say, I find Eggman in Unleashed to be great, maybe at his best even (maybe SA2 or Frontiers take that title tho), as he’s shown in-game and in cinematics to be very very dangerous, as well as a bit funny. Notably his space fleet and trap for Sonic in the opening, his successful creation of Eggmanland, and literally everything about the Egg Dragoon fight, from the music, to his dialogue, to the setting and utter desperation to stomp Sonic out, you can tell he’s really REALLY trying to just straight up KILL Sonic as they fall together to the center of the Earth, even Sonic is caught off guard by his attitude this time around. Makes sense given he’d finally beaten Sonic at the beginning of the game (only survived because Chip saved him) and yet he came back from the grave, restored the planet, and now demolished his dream creation of Eggmanland.

My favourite version of Eggman is hands down SA2 version. Not just because he's threatening or powerful, but also because he's smart. Like actually smart. Not only Eggman discovered Tails' plan to use fake Emerald to destroy Eclipse Cannon, he was also able to keep the fact that he knew until a better moment. He announced that he knew about the fake Emerald plan right after trapping Sonic in a capsule, and he does so so forcibly it shocks Tails, making Eggman's bluff that more effective. This and the pyramid scene before made me fell in love with this version of Eggman's character
That being said, Boom version is my second favourite. He's not dumb as rocks (I'm looking at you, Boost Era), but also show's great writing made him genuinely hilarious yet relatable. Frienemy aspect of Sonic wields a lot of potential

Eggman in my opinion has been holding back more and more on Sonic. Not cause he knows he will lose, but cause Eggman wants to keep testing Sonic and keeping him on his toes.
As a rival, but still has his own ambitions.
Releasing an Ancient evil? He's not doing it cause Eggman thinks he can control it, no it's cause he knows SONIC WILL STOP IT.
Have you noticed from all the ancient evils he has released.. Eggman infact... has NOT assisted sonic at all with em?
Sonic Adventure 2 he did, Sonic Lost World he did, but unleashed? NOPE! Sonic Adventure 1? NOPE! Sonic 06? NOPE! (Well unti the end but didn't contribute much)
Even in Sonic Battle you could say Eggman knew Emerl wouldn't listen and Sonic would stop him... the real reason eggman did what he did back then was to make Gemerl his own Emerl WICH DID BETRAY HIM and DID TEAM UP WITH SONIC to defeat it, cause he though he had full control.
This is why in Frontiers he is abit stubborn at 1st cause he was stuck unable to fight Sonic and Test Him, but in the end, worked with Sonic to stop The End, cause let's face it.
Eggman was never intent on using The End for his own profit, he was after the Ancient's tech and the intergration of Sage.
If anything you noticed when Sage reports that Sonic seems to keep going, Eggman doesn't seem as annoyed Sonic is advancing to his goal... maybe since he secretly is cheering on Sonic.
This is why the line he says: "He is a true adversary but I hate him" is him more saying: "Yea I trust sonic to do the job, but still... I have to beat him too"
In the end... when Eggman TRUELY THINKS Sonic cannot deal with a thing, he will team up with him. Eggman knows Sonic is gonna keep getting stronger and keep pushing Eggman's limits.
In the end... Eggman will never kill Sonic, cause Eggman wants to keep improving too and Sonic is the only one who can do that.
You can 100% know that Eggman can also kill Sonic very easily, but in the end... as we see in "Forces"... Eggman doesn't want a dead sonic, he wants a sonic to keep beating over and over. Knowing that he is in control of that dang hedgehog!

Archie Eggman was terrifying honestly. It's like in a world with gods and monsters. Eggman is the one force that reminds everyone why he is the main villain.
Like he was so dangerous even Dr Wily saw him as a danger because Eggman straight up tried to murder him!

    GET A LOAD OF THIS.
A good Eggman is basically like early Paper Mario's Bowser imo: someone with a clearly gigantic presence that is enjoyable to watch because he's surprisingly ham for someone who wants total rule/control, but is also still a force to be reckoned with.
The sassier characters (like Sonic or PM Peach) can taunt them and make it an interesting dynamic, but you also need to legitimately acknowledge the danger they pose; otherwise they're all sauce and no meat. The reason Eggman holding Amy at gunpoint in SA2 works is because it's clearly a tense scene if not for Sonic's snarkiness, and yet this is the same game where Eggman scratches his butt while watching a news broadcast.
Sonic Unleashed started, and the following "Boost" games plus Lost World (or "Meta era" if you want a group name for all of them) continued to make him just the butt of everyone's jokes, even his own assistants's. Frontiers works by legitimately working around that, acknowledging he has been taken both seriously AND lightly before in cleanly separate instances, and providing an extra side to him by writing around a missed opportunity from SA2.
If you want a new villain, then they need to either be opposite to someone else, or oppose a different side of Sonic himself (without somehow being a rival instead; Metal Sonic already does both, and both Knuckles and Shadow have once done the same and are now more or less just rivals to Sonic due to the same clashes of personalities that had them be enemies before). Infinite looked promising not because he was trying to be a Sonic rival, but because he was more or less the big threat that the masses, including the Avatar, feared; and thus helped push the Avatar's character arc instead. Meanwhile his interactions with Sonic fall flat. On the other hand is Mephiles, who targetted Sonic but never interacted with him; and yet it worked because he clashes with Shadow and dupes Silver instead, challenging both of their beliefs in different ways.

Eggman is the best. I like how sometimes his funny to be introduced to a younger audience who don't know this guy has killed with his creations a few people. Out of all of that his a brilliant genius man. He always has a trick and shows his genius and is cool. Out of all the villains in the world I would always say he is the greatest. Because he is a human being who doesn't rely on magic or God powers like many do. He is a genius.
And most importantly. He is the Eggman.

I feel like the issue is in the main series he hasn't had a lot of times to shine. He's either not well-written or being undercut by another villain. Are there any modern games where he's good and the main villain?
I feel like a lot of people like the idea of Eggman moreso than how he's actually portrayed most of the time, if that makes sense.
